In Japan, you can now buy spare PS4 parts, but will the service come West?

New service lets local shoppers pick up spare parts like an HDD bay cover, bay bracket, screw set, or power cord.

As part of a new service offered only in Japan for now, Sony has begun selling individual PlayStation 4 parts for local gamers, DualShockers reports.

The service won't let you build a PS4 from scratch, of course, but you can pick up spare parts like an HDD bay cover (¥1000/$10), HDD bay bracket (¥500/$5), screw set (¥250/$2.50), or power cord (¥450/$4).

Right now, there's no word on if this PS4 service will be extended to gamers in Europe or the United States.

The site also points out that Sony already operates a similar program for PlayStation 3. We have reached out to a Sony Computer Entertainment America representative for comment.

Wow!!! Sony are selling screws and power cords!!! I wonder if gamespot will report the breaking news that ford are selling tyres, Nokia are selling phone covers and British airways are selling plane tickets. I'm sure they will cos this reporter sure knows how to sniff out all the top stories, nothing gets past him, if it's big, he'll let us know!!!

PS4 uses normal power cords, you don't need to order a special one. I wish Microsoft sold replacement power bricks for the Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Good plan, you can buy parts online but most arent official or have been stripped off a used machine. Some parts are easy to loose or break, some parts wear out over time so being able to get the official instead of reproductions would be handy.

Give me those HDD brackets, so I can swap hard drives faster.

this is really great if they offer more spare part option. I had to purchase a new PS3 because it had a defect and needed a spare part that wasn't sold anywhere else.

I hope that all the parts are available since the design of the PS4 is amazing and it would be easy to repair your own system.

well this is only a good thing, its good to know if something does go wrong i can get replacement parts, i wouldn't want to send my console all the way to MS just to get a few screws or a piece of plastic when i can do it myself.

Are the power cords used by PS4's the standard ones used for computers or are they proprietary?

No chance this comes to the US.  thankfully you can always find this stuff on ebay.  Shipping usually takes forever though.

If Sony did not sell spare PS3 parts to America and the PAL region. The they won't offer spare PS4 past to America and PAL regions either.

But hoping against hope. Sony will offer replacement PS4 parts in other regions.

For someone who has modded consoles since 96', i wish all console manufacturers did this.  Third party and homemade have filled the void, sometimes poorly and sometimes amazingly well, but to have dedicated replacement parts like covers, lasers, ribbons, i/o devices, and hopefully boards would be wonderful. I know there is a market for it.

I do hope this comes to the states.

In japan you can find spare girlfriends. Who later on turns into a giant mech.

Whether or not Sony expands the service to the rest of the world, apparently there's such a thing called 'the Internet' on which people all over the world can use 'auction sites' or similar market places to set up shop and offer people -no matter where they are- the possibility to buy things from other countries, including Japan.

Just a thought.

I was going to say at first I was thinking you could swap out the GPU or something.

Definitely not without a soldering iron. Laptops are bad enough a console would be no chance.

Why would you need a spare parts store for the PS4?

There wasn't a spare parts store for the PS3, is Sony expecting some premature part ware out for the PS4? I know it's made with cheap parts "external wise" but come on Sony

so the Japanese ran out of games, now they are playing with the console?

My PS4 is still kicking ass and no additional parts is needed.

Customization is a good thing. The more options for the user the better. It's all about openness.

It just gets better and better for PS4. Let's hope this kind of service expands worldwide.

Wtf ? WTF ? First, there was an article claiming that the PS4 has superior graphics than the PC now, this ?

@noncasualgamer  so a service they were already doing on the ps3 is being emulated on the ps4 for minor parts and you THINK this means that there somthing wrong with the ps4

What are you trying to say. You just said if they don't do X, they won't do X either. That is just the same thing.

@gamerno66666  But they are soo sexually ambivalent, one moment they love you the next they want to sacrifice you to some ancient gods to save the universe just so they do not have to share you with her harem of girlfriends who may or may not like you or each other at any given time.

jenovaschilld

@Wessel1  It is different. While supply has been filled with third party, homemade, or recycled consoles to fulfill the need pretty well, to have first party parts new would be welcomed.

Gallowhand

@gottago42 They're offering hard drive fittings because you can swap out the hard drive on the PS3/PS4, so that makes sense.

EasyComeEasyGo

Well in Japan, they don't have Xbox One so what can ya do? Might as well Tattoo your PS4.

Dannystaples14

@GSGuy321  It is literally the HDD bracket and a charger. Nothing else really. Nothing that would change the console in any way.

gottago42
gottago42

@GSGuy321 but this isn't about customization it's about replacing broken parts

meedokicky
meedokicky

@SerJohnnyMenace well depends on what PC they were talking about lol

I find nothing strange about this one though, good to be able to change the HDD cover (I assume it is the glossy part?) as it can get scratched overtime.

Gallowhand
Gallowhand

@gottago42 The parts don't necessarily have to be broken.  You could buy a couple of higher capacity hard drives for use, and then buy the HDD parts for them.  No need to keep using the same brackets, etc, each time you swap out a hard drive.
