Iconic Pong, Asteroids Publisher Atari Reveals "Comeback Strategy"

Publisher will bring more games to digital platforms and reach out to new audiences, including LGBT, social casinos, real money gambling, and YouTube.

Iconic publisher Atari, perhaps best known for creating franchises like Pong and Asteroids, has announced a "comeback strategy" that the company will employ in hopes of seeing better fortunes. To succeed in 2014 and beyond, Atari says it is expanding its business and brands to mobile and other online gaming platforms, and also deepening its commitment to new markets.

This includes extending its "classic gaming brands" to new platforms like iOS, Android, PC, and other digital mediums. In addition, Atari plans to reach out to growing markets and new audiences, including LGBT, social casinos, real-money gambling, and YouTube.

Atari's "comeback strategy" also includes a continued focus on its "robust licensing business" for hardware and apparel.

"Atari is more than a game publishing company; it’s an iconic brand that has established a passionate and timeless culture," Atari CEO Fred Chesnais said in a statement. "Known across multiple generations around the world, Atari will continue to embrace all audiences. What the company has accomplished over the years is no small feat, but there is more to come. We're looking forward to delivering on our new strategy and engaging with our audience in new ways across multiple channels as the next era of Atari unfolds. We are leading a rebuilding exercise in a highly volatile industry, so at the same time we are also aware of the challenges that lay ahead."

Atari says it has already made "significant strides" so far this year. This includes the release of RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 for iOS (with Android and PC versions to follow), the launch of a new version of Haunted House for mobile devices, and a new multiplayer online battle arena game called Minimum. Going forward, Atari says it will launch a new version of Asteroids for mobile and digital platforms "in the coming months." The company also recently signed deals with real-money firm Pariplay and and social casino company FlowPlay.

Atari US filed for bankruptcy last year, but later received $2 million+ in financing to stay afloat.

Gambling and video games is a very dangerous combination.

Atari should come back to the console arena. There needs to be more competition to force these slacker console companies to make better consoles lol.

Definitely hoping for more competition in the gaming consoles department.  Hopefully Atari will be an active participant again one day.

First order of strategy: Don't release shitty games.

"This includes extending its 'classic gaming brands' to new platforms like iOS, Android, PC, and other digital mediums." So the PC is a new platform for them? Well, let's see what you've got, then.

Resurrect the studios that you killed and you would probably do fine.

Bring back Alone in the Dark for God's sake.

was this supposed to be shared with the public? is this article on some kind of clever "we'll pretend to dig our own grave and then make our REAL comeback" strategy?

Based on the headline, I'd bet a significant number of comments were deleted.  Gamespot seems to be on a comment deleting rampage as of late.  I'm surprised using the orientation acronym in the subject header is even allowed.  I've had at least three comments deleted the past week (not on this article) for reasons unknown (because they don't tell you).  While those comments poked fun at the staff of Gamespot in general, there was nothing specific to an individual or any foul language.

Happy days when consoles were wooden and joysticks had one button, nah it was crap.

LGBT is a growing market? No wonder it's propaganda is everywhere

Just bring out good games, there's no secret formula. If a pair of indie developers can create an excellent game with barely any resource, imagine what a company such as Atari can do. Although they didn't release any relevant for so many years, they still have a powerful brand name, and probably a decent ammount of money to get things moving.

New console.  $299.  Better specs than PS4 and new games costing $49.99.  Comeback complete.

How can Atari say its making "significant strides" while talking about new versions of Asteroids?

What a "strategy". I thought they were coming back into console business but, oh well...

let's not forget it's simply Atari in name only, it's not the same Atari that made the consoles.....

also after their last little stint I'm kinda shocked they are still around, world would be better without Atari.....

So essentially Atari is somehow finding even more ways to sell out and fade into oblivion. Nice.

What's with the social agenda? Are you also going to cater specifically to atheists, Christians, Muslims, liberals and conservatives too? Create good games that everyone can enjoy and leave politics out of it please.

I just want a new Rollercoaster Tycoon with Chris Sawyer behind the wheel this time (as #3 barely had him in the project which is why for the most part... it sucked).

ATARI use to be a beloved trademark, after that trademark was bought and miss used its nothing but a sad excuse of a Publisher, the should just put it to rest, they are still on my black list for what they have done with Eden Games and TDU 2

@Subterfuge71 I doubt they would spend millions on a movie license and give a programmer 2 weeks o create a game based off of it again....

@VegasAceVII I don't care what anyone said that game was so much fun.

It was atari, so I expected it to be buggy and look weird... but the game was so much FUN.

@Suaron_x Doesn't it leave a note on the comments for deleted ones?

Anyway, regarding your posts that got deleted or not posted/pending, have a look around the comments and you'll see people talking about a lot of regular words being filtered.  Yes it's getting ridiculous, and maybe soon it will bl0w up :).

@Metallicwolf29 It's not propaganda, it's a fight for equality. The only way to do that is to get in everyone's face so they can't act like they don't exist and just write them off.

@Reuwsaat They don't have quality IPs to fall back on, nor great developers to create new IPs. They are deader than a Jurassic-era dinosaur.

@atopp399 And they'd still go out of business because that business model would fail miserably.

@Tauu It's not politics, it's breaching into a virtually untapped demographic.

I'm not saying it's a viable business strategy, but comparing it to religious beliefs is a stretch.

Oh s.hitjubilee, honestly, you absolutely crack me up.

What a daunting mental illness you must have to go off on such a tirade on a brief, off the cuff comment.  You really do just stew in what everyone posts and thinks, don't you.

Apart from your usual blah, blah, blah, junk psychology analysis, you do seem to have a couple of things wrong.

You seem to keep harping on this irrational hate thing, but the truth is, I've never expressed anything of the kind, nor has anyone else who has responded to your sophomoric t.rolling drivel.  I could go into detail, but these days, I find it best not to waste too much time with you, as you tend to devote an entire day/evening battling it out, determined to make me, or whoever else, realize your intellectual and moral superiority.  best to leave you to wallow in your own sad, delusions.  And also point out that irrational hate, to you at least, is ANYTHING that opposes your perceived superior position on, well, anything.

I've never mentioned Nintendo in any of our interactions, so we have another fallacy you've simply made up and tried to state as fact.  It just goes to show how little you know about anyone you spar with, considering I am one of the biggest Nintendo fans you will ever meet, and own every system they've ever produced.

As for a real conversation, I usually save that for those who are worth spending time and energy on.  You, of course are worth neither, but you are awfully fun to irritate, bait, and lure into these hilarious, silly dialogues.

Never has delusion, self-importance, and over-inflated sense of self been so entertaining.  You're lucky you have your own ego.  At least SOMEONE thinks you're important.

Hugs And Kisses.  :)

@virtuasega Yes, because selling a "Better specs than PS4" system at 300 right now would be nothing but financial LOSS, and if you are losing more money than you are making, you go out of business.

I can't believe I actually have to explain that.
