It has been more than four years since Huxley: The Dystopia was first announced, but the massively multiplayer online first-person shooter's long road to release appears to be approaching an end. Having put out a call for sign-ups in May, NHN announced today that it has begun its latest round of closed beta testing for the PC edition of Huxley.

The current beta test period is expected to run through August 12, though NHN offered no additional comment on subsequent trial runs for the online title. Those selected to participate in the current test will have access to the full game, with NHN opening up a variety of cities, as well as new missions, weapons, armor, items, and crafting abilities.

Huxley has been built using Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 and seeks to combine FPS gameplay with the collectability and persistent character actions of an online role-playing game. The game will follow a free-to-play, microtransaction-supported model when it enters wide release through NHN's online portal Ijji.com.

Unfortunately, NHN did not provide an updated release window for either the PC or Xbox 360 edition of Huxley: The Dystopia. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.
