At a press conference for the movie this week in San Francisco, director Gareth Edwards said Lucas saw Rogue One recently and "really liked it."

“So two days ago we got to show George the movie, and we all had a phone call and I got to speak with him yesterday. I don't wanna put words into his mouth, but I can honestly say that I can die happy now. He really liked the movie, so it meant a lot," Edwards said, according to Collider. "To be honest, and no offense to anyone here, it was the most important review to me."

"I will take that conversation to my grave. It was a real privilege. His opinion means the world to me."

Earlier this month, Edwards talked about how Lucas visited Rogue One's set and joked to Edwards that he should add more CGI to the movie.

"He joked a lot about how we should do more in the computer, and not build so much," Edwards said. "We didn't take his advice. We tried to shoot as much in-camera as possible."

Just today, Lucasfilm released a new featurette that shows off how the movie's creature effects are largely physical, as opposed to the heavy use of CGI in the Star Wars prequels.

Rogue One hits theaters on December 16, 2016. The spinoff follows a band of rebels trying to steal the plans to the Death Star.
