Heavy Rain, Mass Effect 2 win big at BAFTAs

Heavy Rain proves a critical favourite, picking up three British Academy awards; Mass Effect 2 wins the Best Game prize; Peter Molyneux awarded the BAFTA Fellowship for lifetime achievement.

Heavy Rain and Mass Effect 2 were the big winners at the British Academy Video Game Awards, with the PlayStation 3-exclusive Heavy Rain picking up prizes for Technical Innovation, Story, and Original Music, and Mass Effect 2 bagging the Best Game award. This year's awards were announced by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in a ceremony at the London Park Lane Hilton, presided over by celebrity host Dara O'Briain.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 was awarded the gong for Best Gameplay and iOS title Cut the Rope was given the award for Best Handheld Game. To be eligible for nomination, games had to be released in the UK between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010. Red Dead Redemption was notably absent from the shortlists of nominees; developer Rockstar did not submit its game for consideration by the judging panels. Red Dead Redemption did appear in the public-voted GAME award shortlist, but the prize went to Call of Duty: Black Ops.

At the close of the ceremony, British games industry luminary Peter Molyneux was presented with a BAFTA Fellowship for his illustrious career so far. He thanked everyone he ever worked with, saying "I'm just the idiot that stands up and says 'Why don't you make a game about theme parks? Or dungeons?'" He also thanked the press, referring to his notoriety for making attention-grabbing promises about his upcoming games, joking: "I can name at least 10 features in games I've made up." Black Ops game of the year? What retards voted in there.... @SloganYams About your criticism on Heavy Rain, i don't agree. I played the game and it was a great experience. The music is original and fits the game perfectly, the story is great.

Black ops nominated for "Technical Innovation"??? that's just stupid

How did Heavy Rain win anything? I mean, I could understand if there were a "biggest failure in narrative" it could win that. But there isn't, so it shouldn't win anything.

"Why don't you make a game about theme parks? Or dungeons?" Thank you, Mr. Molyneux. Dungeons in video games? You truly are a pioneer. If only they had an award for the game industry's most shameless attention whore. Please don't feed the trolls BAFTA.

Im really startin to hate this COD games... Shouldnt even be amongst the nominees!!! are this BAFTA people serious???

The fact that COD is rated so highly completely justifies the dumbing down of video games and media in general. If people don't demand greatness they will not get it. And if they settle for less, that is all they will ever get. Less and less....

Nowadays it seems possible to change the name of a product, create very minor changes and sell it for more. Ipad2 anyone? In fact Apple didn't even wait the usual six months to release it either. And sells indicate that people are still fooled by this simple ploy. At this rate I don't see mankind evolving for a long time. Innovation is a thing of the past. Now it's all about copying off of previous ideas since people don't pay enough attention to the past to notice anyway. And as long as they can get the people to "not care" they can continue to fool them until they have kids and every generation becomes easier and easier to fool.

"Technical Innovation"; it's a sin to have "Innovation" and Halo in the same category/sentence.

it's funny, everyone is saying Black Ops didn't dersvere GOTY (oh trust me, i'd be first in line to agree with that).... so, erm... who voted for it then? :S

Shouldn't best gameplay = best game? Especially considering the winner of best game has you watching more than playing. Bazinga!

You can't allow the public to vote for game of the year, that is like letting people vote in a chili cookoff. The judges know better than the idiot public who can't handle the spice!

@Bamul Well I'm not going to go into the whole political racism thing as that has nothing to do with this artcile but yeah, I ain't no sheep :) @MEDzZ3RO Talk about a cat fight between you two! Geesh!

I agree that Call of Duty games aren't of the same caliber as a Mass Effect or Heavy Rain, but let's be honest. Call of Duty isn't a bad game. Its polished, entertaining, controls well, and lots of people enjoy it. The series is still technically competent and excels in its genre. It's just not as innovative or new of an experience as some other more deserving titles.

I like Black Ops, but Red Dead and Mass Effect 2 was epically better. I mean just.... really people all voted for that.... wtf?

@MEDzZ3RO Well done for standing up to Bamul he is talking rubbish!

MEDzZ3RO
MEDzZ3RO

@Bamul I don't know why you bothered replying, you haven't said anything we don't already know and I've said my piece. I've twisted nothing, you actually said that. No country has even sales, hence I used the word "relatively". I stuck with up to date figures off VGchartz so each game had even figures instead of figures with vastly different times in market. Bottom line is, watch what you say in the future, particularly if it's not based on fact.

Bamul
Bamul

@MEDzZ3RO Oh how I love it when people twist what I write/say for their own gain (sarcasm). Xbox 360 dominates the US and UK, while PS3 sells very well in Japan and bit better than the X360 in the rest of Europe. I'd say the numbers aren't very even the UK, but that's normal, no country has completely even console sales and what is wrong with that? Besides, there are figures for the UK and I've seen surveys done many times or others researching it. I don't see the point in continuing this conversation, especially if you plan to change what I wrote and quote it as if I said it... it isn't very nice.

Bamul
Bamul

@warhawk-geeby Yes, it is. :( I guess I shouldn't have made that ignorant comment, maybe the way British people areound my area treat foreigners like me has had a negative impact and made me a bit racist against the whole country. :( Of course people everywhere follow like sheep. But ask yourself this, do you want to be the sheep - follow trends, hide your true opinions and blend in? Or do you want to be the ambitious & intelligent person, always trying new things? :)

MEDzZ3RO
MEDzZ3RO

@Bamul It's on the topic you chose to bring up.You were the one talking off topic with your comment about the majority of Brits only being addicted to CoD and Halo and only playing them (untrue fact). That has as much to do with these awards as Fifa 11 and GT5 do because they too were both nominees. I brought the rest of the world into it to demonstrate how poor Halo and CoD sales are in Europe compared to FIFA and GT5. Reason I said Europe is because UK is in that category, there are no standalone accurate UK figures widely available. Halo sells well in the US for the same reason the 360 sells well, it's an American product. It's also the reason CoD sells well on 360 because a high percentage 360 owners buy the system for Gears Of War or Halo (shooters). The 360 doesn't sell well in Japan because the Japanese have their own products, hence why in Europe which doesn't produce a system the numbers are relatively even.

Bamul
Bamul

@MEDzZ3RO What's the point in bringing the rest of the world into this? What has that got to do with any of this? These are the BAFTA awards for Britain and we're talking about it here. Stay on topic please if you are trying to start a pointless discussion. One of the main reasons why COD sells so well in America is because (if you haven't noticed by now) that the US is quite a large country - especially when compared to the UK. Which means there's more people there. :P Anyway, I don't even have to discuss this with you; like I said before, this is about the UK not the US or the rest of Europe. :?

Bamul
Bamul

@pock101 Then yes, it IS the majority. :P Like I said in one of my posts, I exaggerated before to get my point across. That exaggeration was the word "addicted". I didn't actually mean real addiction, I meant that people are just... You know what, it doesn't matter. This isn't going anywhere. I stated my opinion in an ignorant way, got hate for it. Normal. I try to be polite, but you people keep multiplying like rabbits.

warhawk-geeby
warhawk-geeby

@bamul I bet you're inbox is heaving ;) haha! I think the matter of the fact is the people that use this website are self considered 'real' gamers or whatever you wana call it.. I duno. And we all have actual opinions when it comes to gaming because it's our hobby. Where as the general public (not just UK, but the world) will follow people like sheep. Think of all the kids at school who buy games because their mates have it. At the end of the day people all over the world buy games because they're popular. The dedicated gamers like to try new things, and as such recognise when games deserve more recognition (as you were getting at). In which case yes i agree, it's a shame people as a whole don't try new things. Most popular games = FIFA, COD, HALO. They're still all good games, but often seem to just riding a wave of their previous success. In my opinion neither one of them titles trys to be innovative enough nowadays, and that includes HALO. I know that will annoy a hell of a lot of people, but it's my personal view. I'm not stating facts.

Molyneux's early games, I'll give credit for (especially bullfrog games). But his newer stuff is rubbish (what a waste of time, money and resources Fable is.) Next year, head of Activision gets humanitarian award.

@Bamul My bad then. From what you wrote i assumed you though that everyone brit loves to and only play cod/halo and you might not knw this but Halo reach isnt so popular in EU

MEDzZ3RO
MEDzZ3RO

@Bamul You said "it's sad that the majority of British gamers are COD/Halo addicts", you said it lower down. CoD and has the majority of West gamers playing it, not just the UK. CoD sells more units in the US then in the rest of the world combined. Halo on the other hand has weak sales here in Europe, Reach has only sold 1.4 million units to Americas 4.7 million. To put that into perspective for you, GT5 and Fifa 11 (released around the same time) have almost sold 4 million units each in Europe. VGchartz demonstrates this. If anything UK are Fifa and Gran Turismo gamers more then anything else (as explained aboved), they sell best here. We don't care much for Halo, MLB or Nascar here like you Americans do. That's not to say other less mainstream games such as Demon's Souls don't sell reasonably well in the UK. In Europe as a whole though non-mainstream games don't sell too well. You can't generalise something like "the majority of Brits play CoD" without having the proof to back it up; as I've shown it's unfounded.

pock101
pock101

@bamul Just because COD won doesn't meen that a 'majority' of brits are 'addicted' to it, it merely means that out of the people who voted, COD came out top. That doen't even mean that it was a majority, just a higher percentage than the others.

Fallout New Vegas nominated as a strategy game? If you are going to try to give out awards for games, then you need to realise what categories are suitable for games, and not try to crowbar them into a format for films and tv.

@Kid2812 When did I ever say that UK gamers are mindless Cod/Halo addicts? Besides, all people like playing games for fun. :P I seriously don't know why you people accuse me of such things. Not one of my posts here even included the word mindless. :? I may have exaggerated a bit to get my point across in one of my posts, but I never said that all British gamers are like that. :)

Kid2812
Kid2812

@Bamul I kinda agree with you on the fact that the majority of gamers in the UK love BO, I just got off the PSN where all my friends was playing it (I dislike it) But that doesn't mean all brits only play popular games and knw nothing about gaming. I have some friends that have played games I never heard off and I play almost everything that's different which shows that UK games aren't mindless Cod/Halo addicts but people that like playing games for fun.
