Harmonix Hasn't Given Up on Rock Band -- What Should a New Game Look Like?

Though Harmonix is no longer releasing Rock Band DLC and has shut down the community-focused Rock Band Network, that doesn't mean the studio is leaving the franchise behind entirely. Writing on its website, Harmonix said the Rock Band series remains close to the studio's heart, and explained that the company is always thinking about the franchise's future.

"Rock Band remains a huge part of the culture here at Harmonix, and there's not a day that goes by where someone in the office isn't talking about Rock Band, or planning for the future of the franchise," the company said.

During PAX East in April, Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos said the studio had "grand plans" to revive the Rock Band series for current-generation consoles. Just a day later, however, Harmonix made it clear that we're not likely to see another game in the series anytime soon.

The most recent Rock Band title was 2012's Rock Band Blitz, a downloadable game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Rock Band 3, released in 2010, is the most recent entry in the core series.

Harmonix is currently working on a number of projects, including Fantasia: Music Evolved for Xbox 360 and Xbox One, a new Amplitude title for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, and various PC titles, including A City Sleeps and Chroma. In addition, just this week, Harmonix signed a publishing deal with indie publisher Tilting Point for new, music-based mobile games. On top of that, the developer recently announced Harmonix VR, a music project for Samsung Gear VR.
