GTAV Hawick reference could "destroy" town's reputation, says councillor

Grand Theft Auto V producers invited to visit Scottish town after naming a "druggie hipster" district after it in the game.

A councillor for Hawick has said the inclusion of its name into Grand Theft Auto V could "destroy" the reputation of the Scottish Borders town.

Speaking to the BBC, councillor David Paterson said he was "disgusted" that the town's name was used for what has been described as a "druggie hipster" district in Grand Theft Auto V, which is made by Edinburgh developer Rockstar North.

"I am absolutely disgusted--there is a lot of history and a lot of good things happening in [Hawick]," he said.

"We have got a lot of good things planned for this coming year," he added, saying that the inclusion into GTAV "is going to destroy the good reputation of the town."

"Why did they pick on Hawick?" he asked. "It is a lovely town."

The councillor said he knew that millions of people would purchase the game and that "they might perceive Hawick in a bad light, and Hawick is a lovely place--a lot of people are very, very proud of Hawick."

John Lamont, the Member of the Scottish Parliament for the area, has now invited Rockstar North producers to visit Hawick.

"I, like many other Hawick residents, was shocked to hear that the name of the town had been used in Grand Theft Auto V," said Lamont.

"Not only is it a game which includes violence, sex, and drugs, but the game's producers themselves describe the area of Hawick in the game as having a 'drug addict hipster vibe.'"

"While some may take the view that any publicity is good publicity, I am sure that many local residents will see this as an insensitive move from Rockstar North."

"The game undoubtedly portrays Hawick in a bad light and is likely to sell tens of millions of copies over the next year."

"They clearly do not know Hawick well, and that is why I have invited them to meet with me at my office on the town's High Street," added Lamont.

"Hawick is one of the most beautiful towns in Scotland, and I am sure that by showing them the town and telling them of its proud history they will realise the mistake they have made."

Whenever a GTA game features a 'real' place in their game, they don't call it by its actual name.  And Hawick, UK clearly looks nothing whatsoever like the town in GTAV, so clearly Rockstar weren't referring to their town and it's just a coincidence.  And indeed, one that most people won't even remember, unless they live close enough to it that they already have an idea of what the town is actually about.  I bet it's quite near impossible to pick a name of a town that's not already taken.  Heck, even Liberty City and Los Santos are names of real places, though again, they clearly are entirely unrelated.

So it's ironic when you think about it.  This guy is criticizing Rockstar for criticizing his town without knowing anything about it, and in so doing, he's actually criticizing Rockstar's game without knowing anything about it.

What a narrow-minded hypocrite.

If I played GTA 5 I probably would never connect a street with a real life place in the first place

Lawl. So they think the GTA guys are going to travel all the way to Scotland to hear how great some little town that no one knew anything about? And then what...? Issue a public apology? Put a patch in the game that changes the name of the city? They are so dumb... no one would have been like "Oh! That town in Scotland with only 14 thousand people. Yeah, I have a terrible opinion about that place now, by golly!" .... until they went and made a big fuss about it.

If anything the guy brought more attention onto his community.

There's a lot of references in the game

Most of us here are unfamiliar with Hawick because we aren't from Scotland. The game is sold in that area, and I believe that he is worried that people familiar with the town will have negative generalizations reinforced by the exaggerated portrayal of the "druggie hipster" representation of Hawick in the game.

That said, the entire game is an exaggerated portrayal of LA, and So Cal in general, and I don't see anyone complaining that it's "insensitive" to the LA community.

What some of you don't seem to realize is that he's just making a fuss as another way for his town to get publicity/tourism.  I guarantee that is the entire reason he's trying to make a big public outcry, going so far as to invite the rockstar devs to their town.

Hands up if anyone who ever heard of this place before this news story?  Nobody? Nobody at all?  Well, I guess his little publicity stunt worked then.

I find this hilarious.

No one other than the people in and around Hawick, would have been any the wiser to the connection.

All he had to do was keep his political powered, motorised mouth shut! He didn't and now not just Hawick is aware of it, but the whole world does.

What does he think will happen, the people of Hawick to pick up arms, start dealing crack and all while listening to some classic Love Fist?

I understand what he is saying but there is no connection, other than the name.

He should have just left it alone. >_<

For crying out loud, this is just a game. How many people playing know of this small town of Hawick? How many of them care? How many will even remember? Besides, if anyone is going to whine and moan about their special town being "Insulted", it would probably be those who live in the actual cities GTA games portray.

BooHoo! This is the most publicity your town has ever gotten. Moron should be happy it's being mentioned. Still wont pull any tourist though.

I'm Scottish and proud and I got news for u pal, it's only a fucking game no one takes it serious so why would the reputation be screwed? if it was named that in real life then yeah it would hurt the reputation but not in a game get a grip lol.

People would rather think that it's a weird coincidence and then focus on something else, if they think about it at all. Lol, this is such a load of hysterical BS.

This guy is being way too defensive. I wonder how many other towns Rockstar unintentionally made look bad and how they don't seem to give a shit. I for one, would be flattered if they did this with my town. Also, how many more people know about this town now? I know I had never heard of it and never would have.

99.99% of the people that buy this game will not know where your town is. they will believe that it's a fictional name given to a fictional town. They will not know it;s an obscure tiny town in Scotland.

Until now, that is dumbass.

I lost interest in the GTA franchise. I used to play it, but I am not a fan of it anymore. I much enjoy other genres of video games and gaming is my favorite hobby. However, I don't enjoy GTA anymore. I can't wait for AC: Black Flag, Sniper Elite V3, and many other games to come out.

That said, if we follow his logic then names in video games are completely off-limits.  No more video game leads named Chris, Scott, Adam, etc...

Can't name your main character Trevor; Anybody named Trevor may be upset that their name is being used by a quote "crank, cannibalism, and incest kinda guy" in a video game.

Pretty sure I don't need to give further examples of how idiotic this is.

@XIntoTheBlue Didn't even know about this stupid town. By stating this they destroyed their own reputation, which will be labelled as idiots.

@tightwad34 As if people can't separate a town in a game from a town in real life. This is the same demented thought patterns that makes people think that killing people in a game will make them more likely to kill people in real life.

It's a freakin' game! What you do in there has no effects on reality.

Fanible

@CCrackheads Agreed.  This is completely silly.  The idea that the name of a character in a game is going to tarnish that of an entire town/city is ridiculous.  No one would make the connection at all.  Names are shared all the time.

"Let's not go to Hawick!  There was a druggy in that one game with the same name, so clearly this town must be a drug infested hole!"
