GTA, Rockstar co-founding brothers squeeze into Britain's 1,000 richest people list with £90 million

But Candy Crush is worth so much more.

The Sunday Times just published its list of the 1,000 wealthiest people in Britain, and it greeted a few newcomers from the games industry.

Most notably, Sam and Dan Houser, the creators of the Grand Theft Auto series and co-founders of Rockstar Games. They barely made the list, coming in at the 947 spot with a joint fortune of £90 million ($151 million). Consider that it in 2008 it took £80 million to make the list (compared to £85 million this year) and that this is the first year the Housers made it, so they had to make up the difference in that time.

Take-Two recently revealed that Grand Theft Auto V shipped (not sold) 33 million copies to date, and we know that he game generated $1 billion in its first three days.

Way above the Housers are a few other newcomers who made their fortune on the success of the free-to-play mobile game Candy Crush Saga. Internet entrepreneur Mel Morris’ stake in Candy Crush maker King is worth £407 million ($684 million), which makes him the wealthiest games-related person on the list at the 238 spot.

There are two other King executives on the list behind Morris, as well as Neil Taylor, owner of British video games retailer Game, and Andrew and Paul Gower, who developed RuneScape.

People who say GTA V sucks should all mass suicide!! The hours of work put into them is immense. And they don't flood the markets because they try to be different from their previous iterations unlike some others in the gaming world.

Agreed they decreased the scope of GTA IV, but it reached a new level of story telling like never before, a world which felt very alive. It felt less of a game and more of a very special audio visual experience like none other.

Sam and Dan did a great job on GTA V.  Then the Wall Street beancounters got involved and ruined the whole thing.  Do you think Sam and Dan will be back with R* to be involved in GTA 6?

I would have guessed they had more tbh. I mean they have released several extremely succesful games. Still I think they will get by.

The rich have become richer, and the poor have become poorer

One might describe them now as "rockstars" perhaps?

It's sad that people can put out crap like Candy Crush and become so rich, it is a true testament to just how ass backwards the gaming industry has become

The King games investor way outranks the creators of GTA?  Just shows how much baloney is involved in wealth.  The higher you go on the list does not mean the higher the contribution to society.

And so many make the list just thru inheritance.  For example, check out Forbes list of the ten new female billionaires.  Almost all got there thru inheritance..

Those 1,000 people on an island of 60,000,000 people have about 75% of all the wealth, all the tax burden is on working class Brits, its like the medieval era again.

This wealth is mostly just all on paper, and not realistic. 99% of King's revenue comes from one game and that game is becoming less and less profitable every quarter. If Mel Morris tried to sell off his entire stake in King he probably wouldn't get anywhere near $684 million in cash.

Boo on candy crush, there are games just like candy crush and were out even before candy crush

If this was an Eddie Makuch article, the headline would have been about the Candy Crush millionaire instead. Learn to troIl, Emanuel.

Pathetic. All the years of work the co-founders os RS had to put in just to make it in the list, and barely for that matter. While a fuking a-hole makes a 3mb app and can prettty much buy RS out.

Huh, I didn't know Runescape was made in the UK. Cool.

They could've been more rich by releasing GTA V for PC.

is candy crush free or does it cost money or is free but with advertisements or free with micro transactions? also how many times has it been downloaded? how can someone even make that much money mainly just off 1 app even if it is popular surely it doesn't make anywhere near that amount of money?

@Trender_man  Collapse is coming, slowly but surely. Money will be useful for ass wiping when there aint no more toilet paper.

@psuedospike He said he was making 50k a day... but I don't think anyone in the media actually verified if that was true.

@mkeezay22  Yeah I was thinking the same thing, other people spent ages building huge franchises and come out with far less money.  But, mobile is booming, just the way it is.  Also I would guess the costs to get things moving in mobile is far lower so the people at the beginning probably don't have to give up as large a share to grow their business.

He just made money off the ads not the game itself he's just like soo many others a modern internet terrorists responsible for nonstop ads malware just more culturally accepted blah.

@strangelove_1 Goodness no, don't say that.  Anyone that speaks out against extremes in the concentration of wealth must be a person who wants actual communism instead, since the rich argue there is no in-between anymore.  :)

We just have to watch as once prominent first-world countries become 3rd world....

spacecadet25

@liquidbutter I agree, he does not have true liquidity, and the more stocks he sold in that 1 company the more the stocks would devalue.

And regarding comparing the GTA creators to Candy Crush investors, they can make another very successful GTA, even if it's not that good, but King is not going to have another Candy Crush.

Also, I dont like Kings attitude, they are a bunch of donkeys

@berserker66666 Why put GTA on PC, it would just be pirated to hell?  And jerks would go rummaging through the code again, looking for the next 'Hot Coffee' scandal (referring to GTA III).

Yes, what great things the PC gamers did for Rockstar, think about how much money was spent dealing with the Hot Coffee fiasco.  If I was Rockstar I'd never release on PC again after that stab in the back.

@tom2750 Candy Crush is one of those Pay To Wait games. You can only play it so many times before a timer gets put on it before you can play again. Or you can pay to remove the timer.

bunchanumbers

@tom2750  Now you understand how big the casual market is. Nintendo made billions on the Wii because of that market.

@liquidbutter I wonder if he took it down because he was afraid of bad karma for making so much money off such a piece of garbage "game" or if it was more of a Phil Fish tantrum moment and he was like "if you don't like it you can't have it, stop being mean to me" kinda thing.  lol

liquidbutter
liquidbutter

@spacecadet25 King has been desperately trying to invent a new big hit casual mobile game, and they just can't do it. Mel Morris is theoretically worth $684 million, but no smart investor would pay him that when his company is standing on one foot and trying to juggle.

liquidbutter
liquidbutter

@spacecadet25 @berserker66666 Oh please. The Hot Coffee fiasco was the biggest publicity Rockstar ever got. They got so much media coverage for that, and it made GTA all the more popular.

tom2750
tom2750

@bunchanumbers @tom2750  what was casual about the Wii? the motion sensing stuff? or what the games? i always thought Mario, donkey Kong, zelda etc were games "hardcore" players play i know there is casuals who play them as well but still i thought these were still considered great games by most gamer's

@psuedospike  I thought i was because he lived in Vietnam and because of the furore of making so much money, his family would be in danger. Anyway  something like that.
