Gran Turismo 6 - Review in Progress

I wanna go fast!

Gran Turismo 6 is nearly upon us, and I've been racing around classic tracks like High Speed Ring and new additions like Brands Hatch for a few days now. So far, I've been having a blast. But while I'd love to give you a full verdict on the game, GT6 has fallen pray to the dreaded day-one patch, meaning the multiplayer, online community features, and microtransaction features of the game aren't yet available, as well as other as-yet-unnamed tweaks. That said, I still want to give keen racers out there some idea of my experience so far with Polyphony Digital's latest simulation.

GT6 makes a highly polarizing first impression, offering excitement with one hand and taking it away again with the other. For the first time in a GT game, you're dropped into the action immediately with a single test lap at Brands Hatch in a swift Renault Clio RS to give you a feel for the handling. Unfortunately, this one lap is the most fun I had in the first 90 minutes.

Now Playing: Gran Turismo 6 - Review in Progress

No Caption Provided

After a positive start, GT6 immediately falls back into the series' bad habits by forcing you to drive the incredibly slow, incredibly dull Honda Fit for over an hour. You aren't given any choice over your first Career mode car, and credits are handed out dreadfully slowly at the beginning of the game. That means you can't afford to replace the Fit for some time, so you have to wait until the game gifts you a new car at the end of the first set of Career events--and when you are given the car, it's only a go-kart. This whole sequence leaves you crying out for better machinery and is only going to make newcomers to GT wonder what all the fuss is about when other racing games put you behind the wheel of a sports car within minutes.

Here's where I would talk about the touchy subject of microtransactions, but they aren't going to be enabled until launch. What I can say, though, is that while buying your way to the top certainly will be possible in GT6, at this stage it doesn't look like the ability to do so has had a detrimental effect on the way the the game works, nor are the microtransactions pushed upon you during play.

Once you're through the slog of the first 90 minutes, the credits and cars arrive much more quickly. Career mode also puts the new circuits up front, keeping returning GT fans entertained while repeating the usual pattern of having you drive slower cars to work your way up to pure racing machines. Silverstone, Goodwood Hill Climb, Bathurst, and Willow Springs are among the new real-world circuits, and there are a couple of returning fictional tracks from past Gran Turismo games that were absent from GT5. The sheer number of cars and tracks is one of the most impressive aspects of GT6. Polyphony Digital claims there are more than 1,200 cars and 100 track layouts, so there's plenty for drivers to dig into.

You can feel the body of your car roll as you change direction, making it natural and instinctive to correct tiny slides and massive oversteer moments.

No Caption Provided

Out on the track is where Gran Turismo excels. The handling model in GT6 is far and away the best, most detailed, and most engaging car simulation available on consoles. The suspension modeling is the most noticeable improvement. You can feel the body of your car roll as you change direction, making it natural and instinctive to correct tiny slides and massive oversteer moments, especially with a steering wheel. Stock road cars also feel much more lively now. In the past, they've been almost as stiff as the racing cars, but in GT6, you can sense much more movement through these less-high-end machines, especially when the nose dives forward under braking. You can also feel the limit of grip much more easily on standard street tires, meaning you can extract more performance than usual from some slower cars.

However, while the driving is executed beautifully, there are other areas of the GT6 experience that are pretty ugly. Gran Turismo has been around for a long time, but in all of those 15 years, it doesn't seem like the AI has ever improved. Computer-controlled cars still follow a rigid racing line that they are barely capable of deviating from. The AI shows little awareness of either you or the other AI cars, making most races play out like mobile obstacle courses with very little challenge.

No Caption Provided

There are some graphical problems as well. Wet weather looks really poor, particularly the effects of water hitting your windshield in the cockpit view. Environments look dated too, especially up close. Grandstands are full of cardboard fans, and some of the texture work leaves a lot to be desired, especially on trees and rock surfaces. Then there are the cars. For the most part, the car models are stunning, inside and out, but the distinction between premium and standard models is still an issue, and which cars fall into which category isn't clear.

No Caption Provided

GT6 no longer separates these cars in dealerships, and it doesn't distinctly label them. Though the developer has argued that there is no longer a visual difference between standard and premium cars, you can spend credits on a cool-looking ride only to get it on the track and discover that it looks jagged and blurry beside the other pristine machines. Many of the cars still sound like lawnmowers as well, but the day-one patch is supposedly going to sort this out.

Polyphony Digital seems to have carried on where it left off in Gran Turismo 5 and produced a sequel that's a natural progression of all things Gran Turismo, rather than a great reinvention of the franchise. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but there are parts of the game that are sorely in need of a makeover, things that a day-one patch is unlikely to solve. Look out for my full review of GT6 once I've spent some more time on the track and burnt some rubber online.

The reviewer is inaccurate about the game forcing you to drive a Honda Fit for an hour.

I did a total of 5.2 miles in the Honda Fit and decided to buy a Toyota Hachi Roku from the dealership and used it to clear both the Novice and National B stages.

You can also dive straight into Arcade mode where a series of high end cars are available as free rental cars.

How much fun would it be if you didn't have to earn a decent car and they gave you a Ferrari from day 1?

and i don't mind having to drive some slow cars in the beginning either since "the driving experience" also includes driving slow cars. and it lets you appreciate the faster cars more.

I feel kinda pity the reviewer, because at some point he/she will have to jot down a score for this game. Anything less than a "9" will net him/her accusations of being Xbone fanboy/on MS payroll.

Gran Turismo 6 (& GT5) really need the simulations tweaks set to the maximum and to be used with a G27 steering wheel or better to fully appreciate the game.

The cars still sound rubbish? My Ford Focus sound better than the lawnmowers on this series sometimes. Let it die like Killzone Sony and re do this stuff GT is dead.

Anyone who has raced knows what a visceral experience it can be with the speed, sound of the engine screaming at redline, tires screeching. Sadly, GT series doesn't give that sensation. . For a self proclaimed driving simulator to still have engine noise that sound like lawnmowers is beyond fail.

The game really doesn't look that good to top it off. No ,actually to top it off, Sony wants to charge you 20 million credits-120 euros- for a Jaguar XJ13 if you're a 'busy' person and don't have time to play through the game. That's $%^& absurd!!!!!!! What a rip off.

I'm not a fanboy at all but the Sony fanboys talking smack is out of hand. I still have my PS2 and play GT4 all the time, and while handling in the cars is the best thing GT series has to offer, it in no way comes close to the visceral experience of Forza 4. After having been in my cousin's Carrera GT, Enzo and F50 at over 160 MPH, racing against others, with the sound of the redlining engine screaming in my ears and the rush of speed and fear that any second could be my last, Forza comes much closer to the real thing than any GT game I have played. PD needs to seriously step up their game on PS4 to get it right.

So enjoy living in your make believe world Sony fanboys, where everything Sony does is pure gold. You're only fooling yourselves, and making yourselves look the fool as well. And don't believe me about the cars my cousin has and what we have done in them? Fine. Could care less what you idiots think about me.

Give me GT's AI over Forza's any day of the week. I am tired of getting rammed off the track on purpose because I barely clipped one car on the start of a race due to it dam near crashing into me. That turns on the "kill"mode of the AI and coupled with the AI super human abilities like no braking needed on corners and unaffected by going off road makes the game dam near cheap. Also the stupid NBA Jam thing ticks me off.

For those who don't know, in NBA Jam you cant actually win by a lot, if you play too well the AI automatically is let back into the game, and vice versa. So you always have 2 or 3 magically cars that stick to you in Forza despite almost lapping the rest of the field, even when the whole field has basically the same car. On the flip side though, you don't get that benefit, if one or two cars get too far ahead, you can't catch them no matter what speed times per lap you post.

Also Forza 4 career was one of the dullest, and Forza 3 and 4 bucket achievements can make folks catatonic.

So barring major improvements I cant see Forza 5 being any fun compared to GT 6, and the Forza 5 achievement lists didnt help matters.

It's just a darn shame that you ignore Forza's best improvement to their AI with the Drivatar feature. You can select from 7 different levels of Drivatars whom all act like real drivers and less like AI. Being someone who actually has the game, I can tell you that it works really well.

Forza 4's career AI was absolutely terrible.

Rubberbanding is what has been a feature in Forza Motorsport since the original (unfortunately)! I know this as I have the Xbox, Xbox 360 & Xbox One ALL set up and ready to go to play any of the Forza Motorsport game at a moments notice. Both have flaws both have benchmark features it's really personal preference as to which one would be better.

Reviewer should have spent his early winnings on a different car if he so chose. They force you to choose a car because if you are new to the series you'd be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of cars available. So they make you pick one car and after that you can buy anything you can afford immediately after. So you can actually gain a bit of cash and buy a better car to suit your tastes. Reviewer you can tell high detail cars from the lower ones simply by looking for the gallery option when looking at the car, no gallery means it's low detail vehicle. Or you can just look at the thumbnails if you cannot see through the windshield then it's not a premium car.

Wish that they would give you a car to start with and after you win a race or two allow you to purchase your own by selling the one they gave you or just using your winnings your choice. Either way, already preordered and picking up later on today. I am aiming for online bliss. I ain't got time for no reviewer score, got cars to buy, tune and drive.

They're making Drive Club look pretty appetizing at this point. I remember the original Gran Turismo and how it gave you a low amount of cash to buy a crap car, but at least you got to choose the crap car.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I should have clarified. I'm just after a fun racing game. I found the original GT very accessible but lately it seems they are much harder to get into without having disposable amounts of game time to play. The jury's still out on Drive Club too, but it does look and sound nice so far.

Can anyone answer if the menus will be slow and tedious again or if they are a lot more slick this time round? This is what it will come down to for me - I can put up with damage (not so much crap sound) but what prevents me from playing gt5 is the long load times etc

It's quick and easy to navigate through the menus.

But there is some waiting when tracks are loading. Also, it takes a bit for the images of the cars to show up I. The dealership.

@garysingh34 @anhonestfanboy Yea but I would rather wait for drive club since I am moving onto PS4. I would buy it but their are way too many damn good PS4 games coming out next year so I plan on just save and save so I can buy most of them. The game is fantastic nonetheless. I can't believe the PS3 is capable of providing these graphics. Mind blown.

Great so this game is a pass then. Real shame I used to like this series but microtransactions I will never support we should take a stand on this everyone. Also the standard and premium cars are back I cant believe that what a huge let down. Same with the track layouts, weather etc that is really shocking and I agree the AI is mind blowing that it hasnt been upgraded after so long. Final verdict pass Gran Turismo for life I think, wont be buying that game ever again, might stick to drive club that looks interesting and hopefully grid 3 will be epic like the first. Even need for speed has improved on its AI and level graphics etc.

Wow this game looks terrible.

I guess they knew people were going to buy it anyway and decided to just juggle some things around and say it's all new.

Micro-transactions?

Really?

Is this where the industry is going?

To put out unfinished games and then nickel and dime people to death just to play them?

These are the days of Armageddon for gaming.

I'll have more than 25 cars to at least test drive when I get my 15th Anniversary Edition but I doubt any of them will qualify as permissible in any of the entry level events. I haven't yet driven the car that sounds like a lawn mower yet unless, oops I forgot about the kart. We know exhaust sounds need improving in GT games but at least PD knows it too. We need to hear the struggles when a high powered car shifts gears, the blat during deceleration and properly modeled sounds for racing exhausts. Now time to get some sleep and then off to Gamestop to pick up my copy and enjoy the series as I always have.

Sounds like a ton of issues with it, unfortunately. Another rushed job. The amount of tracks is great at least, but it's a shame they don't look so hot. Long time fan of the series though, so I'll still be picking it up. At least I've got Forza 5 for the eye candy side of things. :)
