Gran Turismo 5 XL Edition revving up

New $40 iteration of Polyphony Digital's racing game due January 17; Spec 2.0 updates and DLC vouchers included.

Gran Turismo 5 zipped to retail in November 2010, but Sony and developer Polyphony Digital aren't finished with the game just yet. In two weeks, a new budget-priced and updated iteration of the well-received racing game will land on store shelves.

The XL Edition of Gran Turismo 5 is green flagged for January 17.

Announced today on the PlayStation Blog, the $40 Gran Turismo 5 XL Edition is due out on the PlayStation 3 on January 17. The new iteration of the racing game includes the title, all Spec 2.0 updates, and a voucher good for five downloadable content packs. The included DLC packs are the Racing Car Pack, Car Pack 2, Course Pack, Racing Gear Pack, and Paint Pack.

Additionally, the XL Edition includes a reversible inside cover sheet emblazoned with the Red Bull X2011 vehicle. The new cover can be viewed at the PlayStation Blog.

Total Install time takes ONE HOUR AND TWENTY MINUTES. That is not counting the stuff you have to download that COULD HAVE BEEN ON THE BLU RAY!

Sorry, 8 GB to make the load times faster is still to much memory for my system, especially since I got the old 60 GB system! XD

Still playing my original copy of GT5, might just do a trade up and get the new one since I didn't buy any DLC for GT5 yet anyways, love Gran Turismo so much!

I paid 60 EUR for it on day 1. It was... less than finish. Updates made it miles better, but all this is is the same game with all the updates pre installed and a code to DLC, what's stopping people buying a 10EUR of less 2nd hand version instead of this? IDK how much is the DLC because frankly the only DLC content I ever bought was zombie pack for RDR, everything else in other games just SHOULD be in the freaking games to begin with.

if theyve added support for my logitech ferrari steering wheel now then i will buy it, tried it with my wheel 9mth ago at friends house and it didnt recognise it. I guess they want you to splash the cash on the GT one instead.

If the game had quicker loading with a smaller install in this release, I'd sign up.

So the game that should have been released originally is finally coming out? Good I guess.

Cool...but I'll get Forza 4 long before GT5...

So I am understanding that this will have a code for download? If I am right, that sucks. Why do you have a Blu-Ray disc and not take advantage of it?

This is fantastic for people who don't already have the game. GT5 should be in every PS3 owners collection.

@voldo25 I'm not talking about simulations, if i were, i would mention GTR for PC, i'm saying the most fun to play. But i like simulations, truth is i've been playing a lot of FM4 lately, but the way Codemasters does its racing games, it's a whole more fun. GT5 and FM4 have technically awesome graphics, but Codemasters always win the artistic graphics. See Racedriver GRID, the graphic isn't awesome, but it's so beautiful to look at, something that i haven't been able to explain still. It's not right compare all racing games, i know. Arcades like Burnout and Need for Speed and simulations like GT5 and FM4 are different styles entirely, but CM managed to hit the line between those two styles, and that is what matters to any racing games fan i know. We don't cling to GT or NfS, we play every game with whells on it, even Mario Kart or Sonic and Sega Racing. In my honest opinion CM is underrated because the nowadays hype the gaming industry suffer so bad. DiRT and Grid are two masterpieces every racing fan have to play before saying anything.

@sleepnsurf I own both forza 4 & GT5 - unlike yourself so I feel qualified to reply to your poorly compliled comment. Both games are awesome - the only 'Garbage' is your comment  All you lemmings make me smile :D

Load times lol. Forza 4 loads up in seconds and is a delight to play unlike this pile of garbage.

@Raxyman Codemasters makes some decent racing games but they defiantly don't run run the genre. Thats a toss up between Polyphony and Turn 10. People will have their opinions on which of the two are better but they both make the best racing games available.

@collingtonuk Yep, took an age back in Feb '11. Since then its update after update. Ver2.0 is free to update (if you can bear the wait) and all you save from this edition is the time and a bonus DLC... hmmm. Anyhow, personally not sure about the value of this - surely it should have originally been released in this condition no? What I am certain of is that GT5 'eventually' became a superb videogame.

I bought GT5 the other day, it took 4 hours to download all the updates and install it! I was a bit shocked by the constant loading too, going through the clunky menus takes an age and loading a course seems to make you wait for ever! Oh well, its good when you get to play it though, I was hoping for a bit more, little upset that they announce an new bundle days after I buy it but but thats life.

I already bought GT5. I just can't see the justification in buying this. This is nothing more than expensive DLC to me.

I would wish that they would have used more time on the interiors, on the other cars, instead of the black dashboard

@badmrsnake ... ... Xbox 360 launched and Forza 2 came out in 2007 $60.00 2 years later Forza 3 $60.00 and 2 years later Forza 4 $60.00 while GT5 launched and did not do as well as it SHOULD have. So I waited and now it looks like Im getting the GT5 that should have been there at launch but for $40.00.

@GodGundamNT1 err Name forza has nothing to do with Ferrari, just because its an Italian word. It means power, strong or just go! Virtually every review says that its the much better game, only Sony fanboy sites say Gran Turismo is better.

I bought it two weeks ago, I think I spend more time downloading upgrades and installing it than I spent playing. Took it right back and ran back to split/second, just not my cup of tea.

@godgundamnt1 Forza has been the better game since Forza 1. I like both but I have to be honest. Forza is the game that made me like simulators in the first place and it is still my favorite racer, period. @vboydjr The point of damage is to provide a fully simulated racing experience. If you crash a certain way on the second lap of a five lap race, your car may pull to one side forcing you to fight the car to keep it straight. This adds tension because you have three laps to go and your car is now harder to drive. That tension and realism is one of the things Forza provides that GT never has, just saying. To call GT a real simulator, it has to simulate damage.

Ivory-Dynamite
Ivory-Dynamite

People need to stop crying about the damage I have played this game for over 200 hours I have only crash around 10 times and have never used the reverse gear.GT is the ultimate driving game for car/race nerds nothing comes close.plus the 2.0 fixes a lot of the old complaints.I would like some free DLC for us who already own it.

@pszone You can't release a Sony distributed game on any other system maybe PC but if it isn't a Sony system don't look for it. As far as more damage, who cares really? I have yet to understand how showing damage is making the game any better? Are you driving to cause damage to the car or win the race?

GodGundamNT1
GodGundamNT1

@kiramasaki are you kidding, Forza SUCKS its a wannabe imitation Gran Turismo, why do you think they came up with the name Forza a name that has more to do with Ferrari than actual automobiles racing. Microsoft could have tried being more original in their naming but no they come off as a cookie cutter wannabe. Gran Turismo however is where its at, its the best racing game of this generation. period.

kiramasaki

And they cannot put the dlc directly on the disc because? This strikes me as a ploy to force people to buy this new. Not going to happen, content with my 2 GT5 collector's editions. That said 5 was a great game, the only real flaw I find is the fact that some of the best tracks where on the psp version and not the ps3 one. Also regarding Forza, its not bad as maybe my second favorite racing game, but through 3 I would rate them all below gt 2 my least favorite. Havent played 4 (forza) yet.

PixelAddict

@NegasBlack Agree to disagree. More cars does not always = the best game.

pszone

Stop all the DLCS for GT5. Because just work on GT6 for next gen. And things would like improve Like see all damage all cars and courses as well, Get Short cuts , Make the game better and use 100% ps4 power and if you cant do that just realse it on next xbox as well than ps4. And yes stop and everybody stop this dlc crap its old news.

Last I checked $40 isn't exactly "budget". $29 and I might bite.

@PixelAddict. Gran Turismo A-Spec for PS2 was half a game, it only had close to 150 cars in it, most of which were racing models. The lack of production model cars was frustrating and killed the game's lifespan. GT4 was much better in my opinion, but not without it's flaws too. GT5 had it's shortcomings too, the constant updating was a pain in the *ss. Some of my personal favorite cars are still missing and the lack of making racing models for a majority of production cars is something I've missed since GT2. The game does feature more customization and some manufacturers that have never been seen in GT, as well as a wide variety of new and old cars. While GT5 isn't perfect, it's definitely a great game, best driving game available on any console!

flyingdutchdog2
flyingdutchdog2

@istuffedsunny Having played GT and Forza I would hardly say GT5 is a full-simulator. In fact, I would put the two in the same category. There is much arcade play in GT5 as well. Neither are full simulators.

PixelAddict
PixelAddict

In my opinion, this series is currently getting by on reputation alone. GT peaked with A-spec on the PS2. All downhill from there.
