Gran Turismo 5 DLC due October 18, Spec 2.0 hits today

Polyphony Digital's free update brings host of new features to PS3 racer; paid add-on to offer new courses, cars, gear later this month.

by

Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 5 may be nearly a year old at this point, but that isn't stopping the Japanese developer from creating new content for the simulation racer. Case in point, the studio took to the PlayStation Blog today to announce that its sizable Spec 2.0 update is now available, free of charge.

Expect Gran Turismo 5's already-expansive garage to grow later this month.

The biggest update since the game's launch last year, Spec 2.0 introduces a multitude of new features, including simplified cockpits for standard cars, 2011 season NASCAR cars, decreased load times, and Logitech G25/G27 racing wheel support, just to name a few.

This update also brings downloadable content support to the racer just in time for its first paid DLC pack set for October 18.

Polyphony Digital will be offering four separate DLC packs. The Course Pack will include SPA-Francorchamps and Kart Space layouts I and II for $4.99. The Car Pack will feature 15 new vehicles, including the Red Bull X2011, touring cars, and three new racing karts for $7.99.

Ninety total suits, helmets, and other items come in the Racing Gear Pack for $1.99, and the Paint Pack offers 100 new car colors for $1.99. The four DLC packs will also be available as a bundle for a discounted price of $11.99.

@MEDzZ3RO Did you just get that comment blocked mate? It's nowhere to be seen. Haha!

@MEDzZ3RO i try not to cut corners but then again i'm not the worlds best racing game driver ^_^ as for car customisation i don't really care for that but yeah the lack of tracks is also a big put off and as for grid starts i am up to the extreme events (haven't done any of them yet) and every single race i have ever done was a rolling start my reasons may seem minor but to me they are enough to stop me having fun and if i don't have fun i wont play the game. . plus i know it's not a pick up and play type of game i have owned all the GT games i just think it should have been more like GT4 it just seems like it has so much more than GT5

@MajinSquall Those issues seem particularly minor. The more you practice, the more accessible it becomes; GT5 is not a pick up and play game like so many other racers. That's part of the appeal, learning to race with all the settings off. GT5 does offer rolling starts and grid starts last I checked. Cutting corners isn't really allowed in any motor sport, you've got to look at it from their point of view, they have to ensure we can't gain too much of an advantage by doing that, online and off. As for prices, they seem high at first but it's relatively easy to earn a lot of money quickly, the online events give loads of money and are relatively simple. I thought your complaints would be lack of car customisation as far as vinyls go and perhaps a lack of European tracks that should be in the game. Those issues seem bizarre and insignificant to write a game off.

@MEDzZ3RO the gameplay was fine it's accessibility and a few other things like the invalidating a lap time just because 1/10th of one tyre goes of the track the rolling starts why can't we have grid starts like in proper racing the stupid prices of some of the cars like 5 million for a car WTF there are others but these are the main thing i hate about the game

@MEDzZ3RO People just don't like to hear the truth so they respond my thumbing down. Basically seems to be it. I had to tone down my 'truthful insights' on here because I kept getting reported.. Quite flattering really! :P

@warhawk-geeby Thanks a bunch twice over :) I get the feeling sometimes I do have a posse of "thumbing-downers" following me *laughs*. I don't feel either were biased, unrealistic or controversial. Who knows what they want to hear?

@MEDzZ3RO And again you get loads of thumbs down.. what the hell? :? I swear you must have a posse that follows you round thumbing down your comments. Keep up the good work mate.

given the 6 year development time for this game, Spec 2.0 is............ahead of schedule by 2 years. I'm suprised they didn't wait for the next E3 show to parade it around.

Hmm. Seems awesome. I'm starting to regret my purchase of Need for Speed Hot Pursuit. I mean, HP is awesome and all, but it doesn't have split-screen and I had to pay 37 bucks for the DLCs that came just a few days after it was released. GT5 seems to give a better bang for your buck.

LMAO!!! what is this? This spec 2.0 is nothing new to the genre. I'm sorry but "simplified" interiors are EXACTLY like the PSP version. It takes a full HD 1080p screen and blacks half of it out...Great I really feel like I'm driving a car now. Are you telling me it's too hard to take a digital picture of a cars interior for each of the standard cars (no 3d modeling required)? Guess what in 1993 for the Panasonic 3DO "Road and Track presents The Need For Speed" had a digital picture for it's interior view for all of it's 8 cars...on a CD-ROM in 1993! The bottom line is GT is about as real as a hookers smile, very convincing but there is nothing real about! I'm sorry PD but the GT series is no longer relavent. You are still sticking to what WAS succesful in the 90's. It's time to either give up, or become relevant again. I thought I never have to say that. GT6 is rent first status for me. Now, time to play a much better Spec 5.0 update...Forza Motorsport 4 the Real "Real Driving Simulator". Dislike if you love driving vacuum cleaners with blacked out interiors;)

I know somebody is gonna come back at me, but GT5 sucked, really bad, sorry to tell the truth.

MEDzZ3RO

@MajinSquall Question is, what did you want? Gameplay-wise it's always been sound, that doesn't need changing. Perhaps you haven't cared to notice but every car now has an interior view, some may be generic but for first person race fans it's a superb addition. A handful of new cars have been added too. Only issue I've ever had with the game is the lack of UK and European tracks. This may well change when the paid DLC comes along, next weeks is the first of many and that offers two tracks. Who's to say we won't see more? The damage modelling isn't a major issue, if you're going to spend the majority of the time crashing why play at all? You have Burnout for that. Base on PDs past a free Spec 3.0 update is highly likely.

Wow, and here I thought they weren't gonna put any DLC out cause of how long it's been.

i was hoping for more with this update as the original version of GT5 was a huge disappointment and sadly this wasn't enough it added barely anything apart from the fact you can level up quicker the rest like changing the time and weather don't bother me at all it just isn't enough to get me back in the game

I'm glad that Polyphony are aware of any flaws in the game, and that they are tending to said faults. That's the beauty of Gran Turismo; any mistakes are patched at least at some point down the line.

Forza 4 is out, too little too late polyphony! Im never looking back.

All good stuff, but could care less about the Racing suits, helmets and paint pack though. It will be great to get back to using my G25 wheel, not sure why it was not supported in the first place. This will delay my purchase of F4.

The only way i wont find the DLC overall disappointing, is if there will b more cars n tracks down the road. And i don't mean racing versions of cars in the game already. And all the tracks missing from 2,3,and 4.

With the price drop and the new patch out, I might give this a look. Though I would probably feel the need to get a Racing Wheel to go with it xD

@Soothsayer42 Yeah? I never played GT5, I only seen videos, or commercials of the gameplay. Heck, the only GT game I have is the one for the original Playstation, which looks better than some games today! lol I'll probably get both, but GT5 will be sooner, mainly because of it's price tag, not to mention the fact that I'm trying to increase my library of PS3 titles. I have over 200 games for my 360, with only 8, or 9 for my PS3.

The Racing Gear Pack is $2.99, not $1.99. FYI

@godzillavskong yeah i played forza at my friend's... its pretty cool.. But in GT5 the driving is more smoother and better graphics... u should get both if u want to, but i recommend GT5

godzillavskong

I was thinking of getting this, seeing as how it's only 39.99 now new, but Forza 4 just hit store shelves, and if it's anything like the demo, well it will be a hard choice that's for sure. I guess I could get them both, but I only have the racing wheel for the 360. Either way, I hear GT5 is really good, so I'll end up getting it some time, so It's good to have DLC..

Sadly this update is what the game after all of the years in development should be. Oh well, I just got Forza 4 and I'm in love with it.

Didn't they say first they also will have some new tracks and cars among the free update? I'm a bit disapointed about that now.
