The PlayStation 4 Pro will squeeze some extra juice out of God of War, even if you don't have a 4K display. Game director Cory Barlog explained that the upcoming game has a performance mode that still puts the Pro's extra hardware muscle to good use.

In response to a fan asking if he needs to upgrade to a Pro for the full experience, Barlog said: "Nope, you don't have to, but if you do 4k is AMAZING, if you have a 4k TV, of course. If you don't, we have a performance mode that puts the extra power to good use and makes the game run so so smooth!"

The tweet and subsequent replies to other fans don't specify if the smoothness means a particular locked framerate, or if this performance mode can be toggled or if the Pro simply auto-detects a non-4K display. Still, for those who already upgraded to a Pro, it's nice to know the extra power won't be wasted.

God of War is coming to PlayStation 4 on April 20. This will be the first God of War since Ascension in 2013 and marks a new direction for the series. Kratos is older and caring for a son. The result is a relationship similar to the critically acclaimed one in The Last of Us. That's especially remarkable considering some wanted to just leave Kratos behind for the reboot. It also appears to fix the series' combat; altogether, the game looks to be shaping up nicely.
