Giant Bomb, Comic Vine join CBS Interactive

SITE NEWS: GameSpot gets two more sister sites as parent company adds former Whiskey Media properties to portfolio; more details in live stream today.

by

CBS Interactive added to its portfolio of gaming and entertainment sites today, picking up Giant Bomb and Comic Vine from Whiskey Media.

Now part of CBS Interactive.

The GameSpot parent company will keep those sites--and their staff--largely intact. They will continue as separately run sites, although they will be linked to by GameSpot.

Editorial staff joining CBS Interactive from Giant Bomb are Jeff Gerstmann, Ryan Davis, Brad Shoemaker, Vincent Caravella, Alex Navarro, Patrick Klepek, and Drew Scanlon. Comic Vine's Tony Guerrero and Sarah Lima are also joining CBS Interactive, as are a handful of non-editorial personnel. Both Giant Bomb and Comic Vine teams will report to CBS Interactive vice president of games programming John Davison.

Gerstmann will continue in his role as editor-in-chief of Giant Bomb and will help shape the editorial direction of CBS Interactive's gaming portfolio, including GameSpot and GameFAQs.

Giant Bomb was started by former GameSpotters Gerstmann and Davis in 2008. Gerstmann and Davison will discuss the future, how the brands will coexist, and also address questions raised by the audience in a live video stream today at 4 p.m. Pacific.

if you go to comic vine you may end up like me---getting banned for no reason--oh sorry I said "I don't agree" about a comic rev-NEXT day BANNED!

Guess they don't like girls.

Wow. Awkward as hell. Ewwww i'm cringing over here. It's all about the money.

Wow. This is insane. I wonder how Jeff is handling this considering he was fired by CBS...

Wow. Jeff said they are using good technology at GameSpot. Why can't I reply to a post? No reply threads. Comment system is strait out of the 90's. Wasted all their money on that set, I guess.

Alright, Gamespot, I'm back in. Been here on occasion but since all the GB crew left I slowly drifted from never missing On the Spot to becoming an only occasional viewer. But I do like most of your staff, and with Jeff giving you guys another run it's probably high time I did the same. Don't let me down. I look forward to our time together.

I have serious doubt that this is for the best, but if Giantbomb gets run into the ground (to be honest, it has gone downhill in the last two years anyways, with membership-locked content, and the hiriing of the annoying and attention-starved Patrick) I hope Jeff at least made some decent cash from selling out, and it all didn't go to just Dave. Also, since when has Davison been at his position within CBS Interactive? (I don't visit Gamespot hardly ever since Jeff was fired, although Van Ord is good at least) Seems like Davison keeps getting all of these high positions (EGM EIC, 1up EIC, Gamepro EIC) now he is is VP of CBS Interactive? He always came across as pretty jaded regardless of where he worked, and everytime he walks out the door the company he led isn't any better off than before he arrived. Also, way to live up to sterotypes, John. Some classic British chompers you have there. None of your high ranking postions provide dental plans? It's a shame that Giantbomb wasn't producing enough revenue by having locked premium content, ads plastered on the site, donation systems, merchandis storefront, ect., to not have to sell out. I guess uploading 360p videos to Youtube for free hosting costs more than one might think. FIrst order of business: Measure the man-boobs of Ryan Davis and Carolyn Petit to see who wins.

While the two will thankfully remain separate brands, I hope to GOD that GB's site tech is used for a GS redesign. Sorry, but this bloody site is way too buggy and cramped.

I remember Jeff Gerstmann got fired from Gamestop after he gave Kane and Lynch a bad review which it deserved. Kind of ironic that he is back now.

I'll give GameSpot another chance because of this. When Kevin Van Ord became an editor on GameSpot I knew things would be going downhill fast. He's just everything that is wrong with GameSpot these days.

Today I logged back into Gamespot using an account I first created in 2003. I stopped visiting GS since 2010... and now that Gerstmann is back, I'm back. Hopefully things get better.

Hopefully Giant Bomb doesn't become like Gamespot and IGN have. Heck, maybe Gamespot will become good again.

I'm surprised they save our old accounts. I makes me wonder how old the oldest inactive accounts are. I'm a little skeptical after being used to GB for so long, but I'll wait and see what comes of this. Also, . Representing. Edit: Lame. No arrow signs.

@Ringx55, Took the words right out of my mouth on this one, lol. Wow, talk about an "interesting" turn of events.... Well, nonetheless looking forward to seeing how all this pans out. Here's hoping for the best for all. I'm not member of Giant Bomb, but I have went there and it's a cool site. Being a bit of a comic-head, though, I've went to Comic Vine often over the years and like their site a lot.

Yeah he should have never been fired, Kane and Lynch were terrible.

"Gerstmann will continue in his role as editor-in-chief of Giant Bomb and will help shape the editorial direction of CBS Interactive's gaming portfolio, including GameSpot and GameFAQs. " LOL, GS fires him because of a review, he leaves and starts Giantbomb, only to come back to the top of GS with this, so awesome. No reviewer should ever face what he did when reviewing a game.

I bet GameSpot has had a lot more visitors in the past couple of days now that us ex-GameSpot people came back to see Jeff's talk. :-) I haven't signed into this account in years...

I'm so confused. I've hated GameSpot for 5 years over GerstmannGate. Now he says they are ok. I trust Jeff, and I haven't trusted anything GameSpot has said in 5 years. They better watch the shillery. 5 years ago, management proved that they were shills. Their stance on the Mass Effect Ending debate smacks of shillery. If Jeff says they are ok, I'll trust him to a point. They better not lie to me again. Welcome back GameSpot, watch your p's and q's.

Just as long as they keep their hands off my bomb! Also I hope that this gives them access to Button Mashing and all those old GS IP's. I hope that some of the GS staff that was working with Jeff and the crew back in the days that are still with GS will be able to come on the bombcast. Most people have left to do their own things in the video games industry, but Justin, Kevin and a couple of others are still here.

hmm..well, at least my GS account will get more use from now on. but this sucks. a big chunk of the freedom that duders had is gone, and i sense a lot of stuff is gonna change to things we don't like.

While I understand everyone's enthusiasm about this news, I'm still dedicated to Gamespot...I'm a 7-year vet. :) I don't plan on doing anything with Giant Bomb.

This isn't going to work. They won't want to run two separate websites due to one reason: money. Some people are going to get canned & the sites will merge. This is awful. I'll be really surprised if Jeff & the gang stick around after the acquisition is complete.

Haven't visited this site since Jeff left. Here's hoping this works out for both GB and GS. On a side note, Ryan and Jeff should celebrate this by shedding some pounds and chronicling it through a series of (subscriber only?) awesome videos in true GB fashion!

Well this is surprising news. Funny (and ironic) how things went full circle like this.

Hope you learned your lesson. Don't fire someone over a worthless reason again. They'll just make better websites.

I'm really optimistic about this, looks like something really good... both sites should flourish together..
