Gears of War Veteran Developer Cliff Bleszinski "Coming Out Of Retirement"

Bleszinski launches a countdown clock for when we'll likely be finding out more about his next project.

Update: Bleszinski has shared a link to a countdown clock on Twitter, presumably teasing when we'll be hearing about his new project. The countdown comes to an end at 9AM Pacific on Tuesday, July 8.

Original Story: Veteran Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski, who left Epic Games in late 2012 after 20 years with the company, is "coming out of retirement," and will reveal his new project sometime in the next week.

"I'm officially coming out of retirement to make video games again," Bleszinski said on Twitter. "Stay tuned here for details in the next 7 days!" This tweet was accompanied by the hashtag "#DontCallItAComeback."

He drummed up further anticipation for his announcement by adding, "It's going to be a blast to finally tell the story of what brought me back."

Though Bleszinski has been "retired," he's not left the gaming industry altogether. He's attended various industry events like PAX East and E3 in the past year. He also made headlines when he called Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson a "pouty kid" when he canceled the virtual reality version of Minecraft after Facebook bought Oculus VR in March. Bleszinski was an early investor in Oculus VR, saying in March that he stands to make a "very sizable chunk of money" from Facebook's acquisition of the company.

As for what Bleszinski's new game might be, he's previously talked about starting a studio and working on new IP called Silverstreak. This project (potentially a fast-paced arena shooter) has reportedly been "gestating slowly" for some time. He also released some concept art last year, but it's unknown if it's related to whatever he is going to announce in the next week.

It's unclear what form this new game might take, but Bleszinski said previously that he wants to redefine his legacy. What do you think Bleszinski's next gaming project will be? Let us know in the comments below!

Bulletstorm is one of the most stupid games ever created on human history so i can't expect that anything clever will come out of his brain. By the way, someone who calls himself the "Tony Stark of the video games" should really search for the meaning of the word humility in the dictionary.

I'm more interested in a countdown clock describing when we'll be able to STOP hearing about his new project. No one cares Cliff. Seriously, no one cares.

Cool, he's reading The Art of Game Design by Jesse Shell. Which is actually a really good book about game design. So fingers crossed (if that isn't an old photo that is)!

He must have gotten bored by now, good for him.

After Resting up Cliff B could return and create an brand new excellent IP for Playstation 4 and Xbox one. He should return to form and give us a great videogame experience.

Sometimes taking a break from the industry is just what is needed.

I hope this project proves to be that fastpaced arena shooter for PC.

That pic makes him look even more douchey than he's accused of being.

I don't care what Oculus/Facebook/mobile/bro-shooter sh1t he comes up with.....he's been out of touch with reality for a long time now. I'm surprised people still pay him any attention.

Some years ago he called all PC gamers pirates and became one of the biggest console cheerleaders in the industry. As far as I'm concerned, he can stay retired. Most people I talk to refuse to take him seriously.

Nice to see. I wonder what he'll do now. Some people here are bitter and need to stop being so hateful. It's not an EA Dev. Sheez.

Gamespot should have titled the article "Cliff Bleszinski Announces His Comeback" just to annoy Cliff. But it's an Eddie Makuch article, so it's meant to trоll the readers, not the subject.

He should have stayed retired.

announcing coming out of retirement is fine. if any other game developer said that everyone wouldnt have the same reaction.

but because its "cliff" everyone has be hating on him for saying something like that.

however starting a countdown for your announcement srsly? god this guy must think hes like the coolest guy ever. he acts and talks like hes "the man". its ridiculous.

that being said i am interested in what he has to say for a couple reasons. first is the games he has created have been solid and in some way introduced new aspects in an generic "fps" genre, many of its mechanics paved the path to what we see in todays shooters.

another reason is lets be real, ever since e3 died down the there's been like no news. so hey if a new ip is coming out im down lol. and given Cliffs track record you have to be at least a little bit interested to see what he has in mind. looking forward to next week to see what coming.

A countdown clock?  SERIOUSLY?

Cliff, you make 90's John Romero look humble and contrite.

Give it a f.ucking rest.

Why would you retire while still in your 30's even if you had enough money, I think anyone with any creative potential would find that boring very quickly.

who gives a f@@k. Gears got worse as series progressed.. Cliff ....the  man who wanted xbox 1 to only have digital downloadable games.. hope his game bombs and no one shows any interest. Take the chip off your shoulder. Rockstar could fart out better games than cliff.

That should have just stopped with "Gears of War Veteran Developer Cliff Bleszinski "Coming Out""  The symbolism of riding a turtle in the pool is just too obvious.

I love some of his work. I despise his attitude towards his fanbase and/or the average consumer.

What with GameSpot's newest comment vetting system I'm not even going to bother posting one, just go ahead and cancel my membership now.

I can only hope the countdown marks the beginning of a bounty placed on his head.
