Gamescom 2014: Watch Mortal Kombat X's Version of Kano in Action

NetherRealm confirms another returning character for the upcoming fighting game.

Mortal Kombat veteran Kano is the eighth character to be confirmed for Mortal Kombat X. Check out the newly released trailer above for a look at him in action.

Series creator Ed Boon says Kano is "a bit older, but with all his cybernetic upgrades, he's deadlier than ever." The video shows off a fight between Kano and one of MKX's new characters, D'Vorah, on the Jungle level.

Like the other characters we've seen so far, Kano has access to three different fighting styles called variations; Kano's include Cybernetic (eye-laser and grenade attacks), Commando (better grappling skills), and Cutthroat ("enhanced knife-fighting skills"). All three are briefly seen during the video, and each changes the color of Kano's cybernetic eye and heart. The trailer ends with a preview of his fatality attack.

Boon teased late last month that some kind of MKX reveal would be coming at Gamescom, which takes place this week in Cologne, Germany. He offered no hint about what it would entail at the time, and we don't yet know if the Kano trailer is all developer NetherRealm Studios has in store for the event.

Mortal Kombat X does not yet have a release date, but is expected out in 2015 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. For more, check out our latest preview. A full list of confirmed characters follows below.

  • Sub-Zero
  • Scorpion
  • D'Vorah
  • Ferra and Torr

I miss the bad ass style classic feel. This looks a bit childish and needs a bit more horror and maturity level. It looks fun but really I miss the nostalgia to what made this a legend

ok, ok. I'm about to bitch.  one of the things that made mortal Kombat so bad ass was the fact that they used digital photos of real actors in the originals, it was one of the first and only games to do that. now its all cgi, c'mon!  lets super impose some real photos of people in the textures.  i want them to look photo realistic, until that happens I'm finished playing MK.

I wonder if the X-Ray attack is unique, or it will depend on the style you choose for your character.

I think the fighting variation things for all the characters is very cool. Especially if you don't know what variation the other player picks before the fight. Instead of the character having the same abilities every fight, it changes it up, so each fight can be a little bit more unique. Not to mention, you get even a little bit more choice in your playstyle.

I like how they seem to have speed up the gameplay.

this game should have come out like, ten years ago. when is mortal kombat gonna do a fatality on its self? ive been playing this game since the early 90's!  come on ed boon! make a new story already. mk is stale, no mater how many changes you make.

That is the coolest Kano I think I've seen out of any of the Mortal Kombats.  However, too bad the game is 2D instead of 3D.

i know it's still early, but it doesn't look like the fighters show any damage progression like in the MK for PS3.  It would be awesome if there weren't health bars, but rather health is indicated by damage progression models.

I remember getting into arguments with friends about the SNES and Genesis versions of MK2 and 1.  I had the Sega version which didn't look as good but they sure as hell didn't sensor anything.  MK is almost a household name anymore.

This is fantastic! Kano was my favourite MK character anyway but my God that X-Ray move has to be the most brutal one there is.

Kanoooooo. Breaking hearts as always.

I really like how the characters have three variations in this one.  Should make things more interesting.

That X-Ray.

This game is brutally awesome and awesomely brutal.

My in gripe is that Kano looks a bit over-designed, especially compared to simpler and more impressive Scorpion and Raiden redesigns.

@wowwow27 I'd also like them to maybe do like sports games do and digitally recreate actual people to get as close to real as possible OR do another game in the old style as a side-project (Digitized sprites and basic moves). The first two MK's are still my favorite but this is as close to "real" as MK has looked since 1995 (96 if you count the non-Daniel Pesina Johnny Cage they made for Trilogy). They stopped doing "realistic" with MK4 17 years ago. Not sure if it's only now making you stop playing or if you've been done for a loooong time.

@RELeon I think so too, but it's not a new thing it MK. It was introduced in the ps2 and you could change your game style during the fights, which is acctually even cooler

@randomtask09 So far what is known is that Kotal Khan is the new emperor of outworld and like his predecessor is trying to take over earthrealm meanwhile Raiden is gathering new warriors for this upcoming Mortal Kombat tournament however Raiden seems unaware of threat that looms from netherrealm Shinnok has been trying to conquer both worlds and he waits in shadows till the moment is right.

@randomtask09  dont know but it takes place many years in the future after MK9 ... so after the even of MK3 ... I don't feel like we will see MK4 through Armaggedon, it looks like the story line will be completely different

spacecadet25

@donmega1  They felt less stale in the years when they were 3D, and the games offered additional modes, such as an open world story mode, that was awesome.  People's expectations for MK is are low, and I think many of these people have only played the latest MK, and hadn't played the old ones back when they came out.

Make it 3D and get rid of the juggle combos, having fighting styles that can be changed in-match again, and we're back into the sweet spot!

@donmega1 its a fighting game they are all stale we have tekken 7 street fight 4 but really its 40 we have DOA5 i'm sure 6 is right around the corner Soul Caliber what is it up to now 5or 6  virtua fighter 5 maybe 6 i don't know i only pick one up every now and then just so they don't feel stale to me

No dude, MK will and must be always 2D. It's core MK experience.

SoulScribe

@TheLeftHandDoom It'd be weird. It'd also be hard to do health management. I like fighting games, and I get pretty technical so trust me when I say no health bars will be a nightmare unless it's a stamina based fighting game like wrestling games.

spacecadet25
spacecadet25

@DrKill09  They had 3 variations in the older 3D Mortal Kombat games, and you could switch them with a button press in-match.

CruorComa
CruorComa

@spacecadet25 Sorry to say it, but you're definitely in the minority bud. As far as most MK fans are concerned, returning to their 2D roots was the best thing to happen to the series since MKII.

Coco_pierrot
Coco_pierrot

@spacecadet25  PS2 area were the worst for fighting games, especially for MK... 3d battle weren't well made, they weren't fast ... all stuff that was normally in MK.

The famous return to 2d did good for Street Fighter and MK some type of fighting game like Tekken, Virtua Fighter and DOA work in 3d but the fighting is really different too ...

spacecadet25
spacecadet25

@SoulScribe @TheLeftHandDoom  Damage progression is cool, but no health bars would suck.  Also, they probably can't do damage progression since these people are having their neck broken and getting stabbed to death during the match.  How do you show that damage, a bruised face?  They couldn't do enough damage progression for this game, unless it was like that Wolverine game, where you could even see his bones if he got damaged enough.

weetbix23
weetbix23

@spacecadet25 @DrKill09 If you think the game should go back to deadly alliance mechanics when you could do that then you're not going to find many people agreeing with you. Deadly Alliance was the worst Mortal Kombat I ever played (I've played all of them), and 3D does not belong in MK, it should always be 2D.

What i do hope to see in the future tho is a Konquest mode like in Deception, as well as puzzle mode and chess mode. I think chess mode will do very well now because of how big online play is now compared to then.

Coco_pierrot
Coco_pierrot

@Judeuduarte @Coco_pierrot @randomtask09  I get that but in MK 9 they followed the story of one through 3 quite close, changing something here and there but overall it was pretty much it intact but we won't see Shinnok and Quan Shi being chaise by Scorpion etc like in MK4 it will be something completely different.

spacecadet25
spacecadet25

@CruorComa @spacecadet25  Yeah I know, but I like to put my opinion out there so that the developer knows that we're not all thrilled about 2D.  And, once 2D gets dull again hopefully they can try 3D again :)

SoulScribe
SoulScribe

@spacecadet25 @SoulScribe @TheLeftHandDoom I think damage can work for visuals. I imagine it be amazing modeling work though. Just have the wounds open like protruding broken bones and dangly intestines. Just give them infinite blood so they bleed the entire match. I wouldn't find it a useful way of how much damage I can still handle.

If that's the case, can we just have both options?
