Gamescom 2014: PS4 System Update 2.0 Introduces Share Play and YouTube Sharing

Share Play lets you play local multiplayer with a friend who isn't in the same room as you.

Update: Sony has expanded on its announcement in a PlayStation Blog post. The company says to think of Share Play as a "virtual couch" allowing for "an online local co-op experience" that doesn't require your friend to own the game in question. It also highlights the fact that this is the realization of the previously announced feature allowing a friend to take control of your game; if you're having trouble with something, you can have someone remotely take over and help you through it.

Also coming in the 2.0 update is a dedicated YouTube app, real-time activity feeds in the What's New section, and more that's still to be announced.

The 2.0 update is scheduled for release sometime this fall.

Original Story: During its Gamescom press conference today, Sony announced the details of the PlayStation 4's 2.0 system update. It introduces a variety of new features, the most signficant of which is called Share Play.

Details on exactly how Share Play will work weren't shared, but, put simply, it allows you to play local multiplayer games with a friend who is not physically with you. This works in two different ways. In one case, you can (virtually) hand off your controller to a friend as if you were both sitting in the same room, presumably so you could take turns with a single-player game. In the other case, you can invite someone to play a game's local multiplayer with you--again, without actually being in the same physical location. Share Play requires PlayStation Plus.

Other new features in the 2.0 update include the ability to search for PlayStation Network users by their real name, and a way to upload saved videos directly to YouTube (rather than just Facebook).

A release date for the 2.0 update was not announced. We'll report back as we learn more.

I really dont think you guys understand what the Share thing is.... No its not co-op. When you invite that friend or person...its like Remote Desktop for PC. They see what you see and they control the keyboard and mouse..aka the ps4 controller and they beat said boss or do said combo chain or ect. I am sure there is a time window they will allow for a player to be helping you. All you will be doing is watching him play your game from his console on your tv.

There are plenty of times where I wasn't good enough to kill a boss or hit a time marker or something to unlock a achievement where my brother could. So I would just let him do it for me. Thats basically what this share feature is.

YouTube should have been included since the release of the PS4. The SharePlay thing is a neat feature, but I'm expecting many restrictions to be announced shortly before this update. By the way, whatever happened to that suspend/resume mode feature that they talked about before the release of the PS4? Still anticipating this feature.

As an XB1 fan, the share feature does seem appealing, though I dont think its going to function as intended by consumers. Im sure youll get to share a level or two but not the entire game or campaign. I also think it can work against DEVs by allowing someone to try a game and then they dont like it and go around saying how horrible a game is, diminishing the games initial appeal to another consumer. But regardless the feature sounds cool af. Also SONY fans need to start up a petition to get a SOCOM 1 and 2 and maybe confrontation REMASTERED. The one franchise that WILL sell PS4s (to myself included) Thats the only game Ive ever played on any PS. By far the greatest title ever on that console. IMO of course.

um...didn't they announce these features long before the ps4 was released? This was sort of the big thing as to why you should get this over the xbox but it's not until a year later that these features are implemented. pathetic sony, just pathetic

the lack of usb support is really annoying - such a backwards step from ps3. Used to be able to play my own videos and pictures now i cant.... sold my ps3 to fund ps4 and never dreamt they would remove features! really wish id kept the 3 and saved my money for now... :(

Pretty cool feature.  But be warned! Girlfriends will be calling for help trying to pass a level, reach certain obstacles, etc...

Share Play sounds like a great way to promote games, actually (if it works the way I think it does).

If you know someone who's on the fence about getting a game, just let them take over for a few minutes to get a feel of it. One person has already made the full price purchase, so it's not like it's a free demo. This could definitely lead to more game purchases.

Share Play actually sounds really cool. Especially since the other person doesn't even need to own the game.   So many possibilities with this one.

However, DLNA, media server etc.  is way overdue.

More Apps.

Release a version with bigger HDD.

Come on Sony, don't relax just because you are ahead.  Get to work, MS has been a lot better with new features and updates as of late.

WEIRD RIGHT...

Xbox wanted to be purely media orientated with their console, yet people didn't like it and bitchd, so they changed and became focused on gaming, and a few months down the line they started right back up again and people like it, now PS wanted to be purely gaming orientated, and people jumped over the moon, and yet a few months down the line, they are doing what MS ALREADY did, what a fukng coincidence...

its a funny world with funny minds and stup1d consumer demands and hate, but both Sony and MS understand this, its called CHANGE and sht hits the fan when changes happen...

It will also allow you to control coop if there is local coop available in the game.

@screamsandvalor Same. The only restriction announced is max limit of 60 min per session, but unlimited sessions. But I'm far more interested in the suspend/resume mode. Probably going to be in 2.1 or something. They wouldn't leave that to 3.0. By then someone would sue Sony for false advertising.

@Heckla I don't understand why they can't do this.  Just implement what Steam does.  On your screen name there is a drop down so you can see their previous aliases so there's no confusion for friends.

drakotar

@Heckla I agree, with the recent survey where thousands of users demanded a name change system i'm surprised why Sony has neglected the plea and decided to keep the feature regional locked to Japan. I think their excuse was "Its hard for our IT personnel to implement" which is rubbish since its has already be rolled out in Japan upon the release of the PS3. I would actually pay £20 to change it, Sony could make a pretty penny from implementing it. I would also consider purchasing a PS4 too if they were to implement PSN name changing.

sampson3121

@Heckla so you made an ID that you don't like and you want the world to stop because you want to change it? ill take the shareplay before that crap.

@martinbryant dude.... ps3 had 10 years worth of software features and OS updates. PS4 is still a very new platform, software features will come.

sampson3121

@straightcur better then sitting in front of your ps4 and a friend sharing a game you don't own so you can both play it together? i don't think you understand how huge this really is dude!

hystavito

@straightcur I was going to say the same thing about Share Play, it does sound cool.  It might actually encourage games designed for local co-op again, or I guess in this case remote "local-style" co-op :).

@arios1977 I think that's coming next update? I know it's this year, but I forgot exactly when.

@jameshubert12 @Vodoo Yeah he is right, if you go back to E3 2013 it went MS presentation in the morning, Sony in the afternoon, Right?

Sony at the start of the day had DRM features and the camera included with the PS4 (exactly like the XB1 bundle and the PS4 was meant to be £429.99 as well) but the moment they found out the price and the mixed reviews of the DRM they did a 180! so they could have lower prices and look like THE GOOD GUYS and sucker punch MS but not many people know that, do a bit of searching on youtube and google and you will know that that is TRUE!

People bitch when MS do 180s or do something when listening to their CUSTOMERS but when MS do a 180 because of all the hate, SONY comes along and magically EVERYONE likes it.

Vodoo

What are you talking about? How did Microsoft start right back up again with their digital everything philosophy? They eliminated Kinect and focused more on games. They improved the tv functionality that was already present, and thwy allow people to play movies from USB devices.

The only digital thing is EA Access and that's more EA than Microsoft. And Sony is making it easier to play games with friends.

None of this was even close to the old digital everything vision.

cmiddleton86

Sampson, Don't be rude. Some of our IDs go back to 2006. Thats a long time. Things change, people grow up, gain new titles and do new things in 8 years. I can change my name IRL, on XBL and on multiple PC gaming services. However, I can't on PSN. PSN name change has been due.

Heckla
Heckla

@sampson3121 @Heckla Its easy to do share play but it causes the world to stop if I ask for basic account management? Judging by how long PSN has been around you might just be right. And you're absolutely right in saying I want crap like searching for full names instead /sarcasm.

Its the fourth generation of the PlayStation and I'm not going to clap like a trained monkey for things like Share Play when there's missing functionality that should have been there from the get go or inherited from the PS3. Things like DLNA, better rubber on the controller sticks etc. You want me to make a list of things I'd rather have than Share Play? Get over yourself and stop dissing other people for having other priorities while gaming.

straightcur
straightcur

@eddieman21 @straightcur  Yes I do know.  I have 2TB in my PS3. But a lot of people don't know how or would prefer the convenience built in.  Consoles are popular because they are easy to use and convenient.

hotwog21
hotwog21

@healeyloader @jameshubert12 @Vodoo Sony and microsoft are both owed by the same company, the phrases ''console war" or ''competition is good for us gamers/consumers'' is just an illusion. THATS WHAT MAKES EVERYTHING YOU JUST SAID AND HOW PEOPLE REACT EVEN FUNNIER :)

sampson3121
sampson3121

@Heckla @sampson3121 yeah the rubber ripped off the joystick but instead of crying about it i spent 5 bucks for some new rubber ...no big deal.

snap your fingers and maybe they'll jump for you...i understand and mostly agree with the things you want but find the gaming community a little whinny, even though were getting this amazing feature where one might say this is great for gamers, we hear bitching and complaining. to each there own i guess, 1 sec........playing mp3 on my pc while i play bf4.
