Free Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 update goes live

Heroes & Heralds mode hits Xbox 360 and PS3 crossover fighter, lets players tweak game properties in both online and offline modes.

Gamers ready for another round of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 received a treat today, as Capcom launched the free Heroes & Heralds downloadable add-on for the game. The add-on introduces a new mode for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the crossover fighting game.

The heralds in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3's new mode all carry a silvery sheen.

The new Heroes & Heralds mode will include offline and online components built around the storyline of Earth's heroes fighting Galactus' heralds as they attempt to secure the planet as their master's next nosh. Players will pick one side and fight to earn ability cards that carry a variety of game-changing effects. For example, one card makes a fighter stronger as he or she takes damage, while another card gives any character an air dash. Each card is based on a character pulled from Marvel's and Capcom's histories.

While console players will have to download the mode, Capcom has said it will be included from the get-go in the PlayStation Vita version. That edition of the game is set to launch February 15, alongside the PS Vita First Edition bundle. The standard PS Vita hardware is scheduled for a February 22 launch.

@WafflePrime LOL! When it comes to Capcom it is always something that isn't ready by the release date.

Heroes & Heralds Mode huh... more like Super Smash Bros. Mode.

@angry_roman1011 How long have you been playing console games? Because fighting games have been getting updates since Street Fighter 2: Championship Edition came out almost 20 years ago.

For so many years I thought console games never needed updates

A new broken mode for a broken game.

I'm really liking this new mode, it brings a new strategy to the game. As a side note Capcom said from the beginning that this DLC was going to be free, the mode wasn't ready in time for the release.

I'll believe it when I see it. I don't trust Capcom anymore. That's why I still haven't bought this game and it seems to have saved me some cash.

Thanks Capcom! Another kick in the balls to us fans that actually bought the original game! Note to self: Never buy the original version of a game from Capcom! Wait for the Hyper Super-mega edtion!

Oh my Go.... well ,I guess Capcom has read some posts from the forums and wanted to clear their faces from tomatoes) But still it's just a little step to the normal way of doing business, later they will make more costume, character, theme pay-money-only DLC)

Free DLC? Capcom? I must have stumbled into an alternate dimension.

@mellow09 Are you serious or just being foolish?

@TheArcade This is a catch how? this is a game mode that looks like tons of fun, and it's not cheating your way to victory because both people choose to play the game mode, they weren't just put up against somebody who "cheats".

another mode to make fights all the more cheesier than it already is.... trust me, once people know the intricacies of H&H mode & how they can maximize its potential together with the top tiers of the game, UMVC3 will be even more broken than vanilla

How many people will be downloading this update anyway? Last time I checked, it did sell poorly. No wonder it's free.

TheArcade

So basically Heroes & Heralds mode gives you the ability to cheat. Some freebie Capcom, why not give us some Gameshark codes while you're at it. *rolls eyes* It's free because they allow you to cheap your way to victory using gimmicky unlockables. We should have known there would be a catch to it!

Never thought I'd see "Capcom" and "free" in the same sentence again. Color me surprised.

I'm new to playing UMVC3 so Heroes and Heralds is like my training at least offline

I have been playing this mode and it is sweet. A lot better and much deeper than the arcade mode.

Not bad. Uncharacteristic for Capcom.

@tachsniper I can since I have to pay another $40 to play it. I already payed $70 for what I thought was the only one coming this year. They at least could include it in that.

This game is not even worth my time or money the second time around.

Ugh...now, what would be nice is if Capcom would release an update for the standard Marvel vs. Capcom 3, so that I don't have to fork out another £20 in order to play the same game twice... I should've known...what with it being Capcom and all.

This is cool and all, but why wasn't this in the original MvC3?
