Former Blizzard, SOE, Relic execs create new studio

San Diego-based Molten Games working on AAA online game with multimillion-dollar investment from NCSoft.

Former Blizzard Entertainment, Sony Online Entertainment, and Relic Entertainment executives have created a new studio called Molten Games.

Based in San Diego, California, the outfit is currently working on a AAA online game made possible in part by a multimillion-dollar investment led by Guild Wars publisher NCSoft.

"We created Molten Games in order to truly have control over our game development and IP, and we're going to create something epic," said Molten Games CEO and cofounder Jungwon Hahn in a statement.

Hahn spent nine years at Blizzard Entertainment, where he worked as managing director and regional managing director. Also leading Molten Games is Paul Della Bitta, who spent seven years at Blizzard Entertainment, as well as SOE and Relic veteran Blaine Smith.

No information about Molten Games' debut title has been released, though the company's new Facebook page features an image (above right) of a city at night. Job listings at the studio suggest the game will run on Epic Games' Unreal technology.

Huh, I may be completely misremembering but that photo looks similar to a rumored game that was in development by the now defunct Paragon Studios(from now also shuttered City of Heroes).  It was something of a City of Stalkers(think assassins with stealth/cloaking ability) concept or City of Shadows. Very little info was given and a dev would make only the smallest non-committal comment for us to glean any useful info.  We did know they were working on a non-MMO and supposedly a new MMO concept. Would make some sense because NCSoft did retain all the IP and why let it go to waste?

More online generic stuff? Sigh.

Need more offline, single player game worlds like the one in the picture.

It doesn't require fantastic graphics to create fantastic atmosphere.

The developers and publisher all scream generic MMO in the making.

sometimes I get so mad at smart mouth little sissies! When I get really mad, my vision gets really blurry, and I just attack the closest person to me, which is either my sister, or wife.

I realize NCsoft is a multi-billion dollar company, but Lineage 2, Aion, guild wars, Guild wars 2, WildStar, and now this? incredible. They obviously love  adding new mmos to their plate.

SOE's Planetside 2, fail
Relics Company of Heroes 2, fail
Blizzards Diablo 3, biggest fail

It certainly *sounds* like this studio might be worth something, but I'm not interested in a online game, no matter how "epic" it is. I love Blizzard for their singleplayer games, even though I know they're also famous for their multiplayer with battle.net.

Those that leave and turn their back to blizzard, will regret it. They always do.

Hope they were not convinced to borrow money from the state of California.

Ugh... here's hoping it's not another Cash-Shop Money-Grab.

I'm looking at you GW2.

So, another MMO I take it? That's what NCSoft + Online game would have me believe. I'm always excited to see what a new studio with talented guys on it can do striking out on their own, but I'm beyond burnt out on MMOs at this point.

@brainiac1988 It's the background image for Molten Games' website. Probably just some concept art that may or not have anything to do with what they're working on. It's definitely not from WoW.

Those rooftops sort of remind me of the Epic Citadel map in the Unreal Development Kit.

@Deyakk  yes , yet they love cutting content from it if it has anything to do with asian culture apparently , if you havent kept up with GW2 stuff , they completely cut out Cantha (aka GW1 Factions content is now non existant) all cause it "mis represents" asian culture or something like that.......sorta hard to imagine a fantasy world not being the exact same thing as real world related ;-P

@eyematter Yea, I'm sure the Guild wars guys hate it...being able to make new games and not be stuck making diablo/warcraft over and over and over.

@stan_hg @Mr_BillGates

What an amazing trend WoW introduced in the gaming world Players were addictive but now most of the industry developers too.

@vadagar1 @eyematter

BLIZZARD'S MIGHT CANNOT BE MATCHED!

Their supremacy is undeniable. Torchlight and Guildwars combined made less money than 3 mouths of what Wow brings in. And it brings in alot of money, becasue it is simply the best. Anti-conformist hate blizzard.

@Stiler @eyematter While GW and Torchlight have been rather successful, I believe Hellgate London bombed pretty bad

@fatee @Tripwolf  Micro transactions in MMO's are not acceptable under any circumstances, cosmetic or not.

WoW ruined the industry and f2p movement managed to ruin it even more.

@Dumachum @fatee @Tripwolf  Boy, I'm so glad we have the authority on what is and what isn't "acceptable" in here. What would we ever do without him?

@mr_tootsie WoW actually made MMOs accessible to people that aren't basement dwellers playing 12-hours a day.

@Dumachum @mr_tootsie @fatee @Tripwolf

I’ll give you EQ and UO; both were excellent for their time. But SWG and AC?? lol They were total shit – SWG had tons of potential but sadly failed in almost every regard. As for WoW, it was superb back in the day before everything was homogenized and streamlined. Say what you want about WoW but every MMO developer since has been trying to reach the lofty standards that it set.

mr_tootsie
mr_tootsie

That's just your biased opinion; and commercially speaking everyone would disagree. Not that I have anything against those games, nor am I really defending WoW. But those aren't valid arguments pertaining to your original comment.

Dumachum

@mr_tootsie @Dumachum @fatee @Tripwolf

Everquest, Ultima Online, Asherons Call, Star Wars Galaxy before NGE were all superior to WoW and were what MMORPG's are supposed to be.

WoW and everything after it aren't MMO's they are theme parks for badwagoners and American Idol watchers.

mr_tootsie
mr_tootsie

@Dumachum @fatee @Tripwolf So it's acceptable to buy hats in TF2 but not GW cause it's an MMO? I'm not a fan of F2P models but they differ greatly between games. Also what did WoW ruin? They made the industry standard for MMOs.
