Flashback remake announced by Ubisoft

Remake of 1992 title coming to Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and PC this summer.

The '90s adventure Flashback is being revived for current-gen consoles to celebrate the original game's 20th anniversary, Ubisoft has announced.

Flashback, which is being developed using the Unreal engine by French developer VectorCell, will be released for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network later this year.

The game is a reimagining of the 1992 original and features 3D graphics, new controls, and a levelling mechanic for protagonist Conrad B. Hart. Vector Cell claims the game is now more accessible and features platforming challenges that are slightly less demanding than in the original.

Conrad's enemies will once again be the shape-shifting morphs, and all the characters from the original game will make an appearance in the remake alongside new additions.

Speaking in a statement, Vector Cell said simply porting the original would have made a game that was "rather punishing through today's lenses."

Despite all the new changes, however, Vector Cell is confident that it was "able to keep Flashback's soul and put it into a new body." Five of the staff at the 15-strong development team worked on the original game, including original creator Paul Cuisset.

Flashback was originally developed by Delphine Software Interactive, which also produced Eric Chahi's '90s hit Another World. Both games used a distinctive rotoscope animation style similar to the original Prince of Persia, which also received an HD remake back in 2007.

Vector Cell's last title was 2012's survival horror downloadable game AMY, which received a score of 3.0 in its GameSpot review.

I'm happy to see this game getting a PC release as well. I have been waiting for a proper 2.5D platformer with a sci fi setting for a while.

The chances of getting a Shadow Complex port any time soon are rather low, this will most definitely be a great replacement.

The original is possibly my favourite game ever! I really hope they don't stuff it.

One of my favorite games ever.  I've been wanting to play this game again for more years than I can remember.  I am so stoked for this.  I also don't remember it being as difficult as they are saying.  I beat the game many times.  I just hope it isn't to easy.

OH HELL YEAH!

I still have the cartridge for my Genesis.

Other games that deserve remakes how about Out of this world, Immortal, and the great Legacy of Kain. Can't wait for the Shadowrun remake as well although I feel it will be a letdown in the end.

I support this games remake just hope they do it justice and don't give us a POS taking up HD space. I remember renting this game as a 13 year old taking it to my uncle's house and not returning it. I probably still have late fees on it or at least my mom does lol.

Hey Ubisoft, I thought there wasn't room for B-grade games. Eh? Eh?

Oh that's right. We have to make it easier so the pathetic kids today can play it. We all know that can't handle adversity. Let's give them a trophy for second place too.

Why the hell would investors continue to supply money to the developer that made Amy?

Nice, I played this game all the time on the Genesis.  I even bought the PC-only sequel which was great, but buggy as hell.

I watched the video.I dont remember the originl game had a map with a line which leads to the next point. And in this video Conrad is jumping very strange.
I hope they deliver the original game with the remake together so i can play the original again.

This feels like all those crap remakes of decades-old horror and sci-fi favourites.

Why won't any of these developers make games in 2D anymore?  3D just doesn't work with side-scrollers like this.  Rayman Origins showed that games can look and play beautifully in 2D with the tech we have these days so why the **** is no one using it?

I really don't like simplified games.  HD remake, fine, but it better play the same.

God damn the Gamespot guy sounds REALLY annoying.

I would also like an HD Out of This World and Heart of Darkness remake.

Oh hell yes! Played Flashback to death.

EDIT: Wait ... 3D graphics? Yeah pass. You already ruined Syndicate.

The deeper one looks into it the less it seems like an actual flashback to Flashback. Personally, the rotoscoping animation effect was a big part of the visual design. More accessible...mehhh.

Also, I think I liked the protagonist better when you could make out less details of him...like the way he looks almost EXACTLY LIKE NATHAN DRAKE but somehow douchier in HD.

Ehh, has the potential to at least be decent, not sure how much it is going to flash me back to Flashback.

Will it be out of this world? Remains to be seen.

Brilliant, this was the first game I got with my Sega Megadrive and I finished it several times. Great game, great story, great graphics.... just everything one could wish for. My only fear is that this remake will NEVER have the same impact the original had but f*ck that, still gonna get it for the good memories :)

" features platforming challenges that are slightly less demanding than in the original."

yes quality example of modern day dumbing down of games.

...I'm usually really impressed with GS news channel here....

But I have never heard of Flashback before. What is this game? What was it like? Can I see a SCREENSHOT for F's sake.

Guess I'm off to google.

PC yes.

This was one of my all time favs growing up on the Amiga. I never actually finished it due to a shit joystick and very demanding gameplay. Lets see if can finish it 20 years later with a gamepad bitch.

Ubisoft dumbs down a well known game for its challenge expecting to make more sales : fails to meet expectations.

Fromsoftware shows 12mins of DS2 gameplay, staying true to their roots with the same amazing, challenging gameplay after deciding to not go the dumbing down route : game will sell like hotcakes.

Stop cattering to the fucking casuals who have no real interests in gaming. Also stop ruining well-established franchises by changing everything that made their gameplay unique. (RE, Tomb raider, diablo etc.)

So many great memories have been ruined with this gen.

Worked on Amy = No Good.

@Cowboy-Bebop This wasn't even a hard game heh.

Oh and I hate those trophies. You want your platinum but you can't get it unless you "die 5 times in a row on easy difficulty" to earn a trophy.

@orangepeel1972 Re-read that, slowly -- it's an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT GAME.   3D?  "Accessible?"   I'm highly suspicious, but I'll play the trial before I cast final judgment.

@dethman75 You won't -- not because of gamepad or skill, but because it's clearly a completely different game / total reboot.  (props on the Amiga, though.)

@OuTLaWzGamer "So many great memories have been ruined with this gen." True words

Demon Souls and Dark Souls are a perfect example that you don't need to make a game brain-dead easy to make it sell like hot cakes and gain critical reception...

After reading the article I can assure you 100% this game won't be as good as the original..it will receive the..."casualification" like almost every great franchise from the PS2 era did with this gen..

@Navardo95 Seriously. Way to alienate the original fan base that are really the only people who would care about something like this in the first place.

"Hey folks! Remember that thing you loved when you were a kid? Well we took it and made it !@#$ing stupid for ya! Enjoy!"

OuTLaWzGamer

@Navardo95 @OuTLaWzGamer Completely agree I havent had the same feeling with games since back on GC/PS2. Sure there are gems released once in a while but way too many overpriced ,linear,story-focused with dumbed down gameplay games are coming out lately. This is why the soul serie is so awesome, they dont shove the story down your throat, its still there, but you have to discover and learn it by yourself all that while enjoying one of the most polished and challenging gameplay ever.
