Atari releases the first screenshots for its upcoming Xbox Live-ready Magic: The Gathering game that combines fighting and real-time strategy elements.

Although Magic: The Gathering - Battlegrounds was demonstrated at E3 last month, Atari hasn't released any screenshots of the game until today. These first images show a number of the creatures based on cards from the Magic: The Gathering collectible-card game and some of the action sequences that pit the creatures of opposing wizards against each other. The game includes spell and creature cards representing the five schools of magic in the card game, and the fast-paced creature fights are complemented by a strategic level that involves deciding which spells to collect.

Magic: The Gathering - Battlegrounds will feature a six-chapter single-player quest mode and full online play via Xbox Live or PC Internet matchmaking. The game is scheduled for release late this year.
