Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn hits PS4 in April 2014

Square Enix confirms launch window for PlayStation 4 version of MMO.

The PlayStation 4 version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will launch in April 2014, Square Enix announced today.

The massively multiplayer online role-playing game's launch will be preceded by a beta period starting on February 22, 2014 in North America and Japan. That is the same day the PS4 launches in Japan.

A Realm Reborn originally launched for PC and PlayStation 3 in August behind a generally solid critical reception, though server issues plagued the game at launch. PS3 players will be able to transfer their characters to the PS4 version for free.

In November, Square Enix boosted its financial outlook after more than 1.5 million players had registered for the game. For more on A Realm Reborn, check out GameSpot's review of the PC version.

Anyone care to take a guess on how much this is going to cost on the PS4 ?  A copy is selling on Amazon right now for the PC for 20 bucks... I was unaware of the monthly fee untill reading it below :-(

I tried the game and sadly I was disappointed, needless to say I didn't subscribe when the free month ended.

Yeah, I done with MMO's which require initial buy then monthly fee. i'm ok to buy a game or with monthly fees, but not both. If wow would not make me to pay for all the expansions, i'd pay a few monthly fees just for tourism, same with this game

I'm not paying $15 a month to play this. I did that with FF XI for a year and that was enjoy. Nothing but a complete grind with almost no fun at all once you got past L25. They really need to consider lowering their monthly rates if they want more gamers to play it. If it was maybe $5 or less a month, I might try it for a year at least. Having it as a FREE game would be better.

Well  think game should be free to play game be honest.

I enjoyed the beta, didn't enjoy hearing about a monthly fee.

this game isn't BAD... i log on and play from time to time vary casually.. but i was hoping for more of a FFXI kind of experience. but thats my own fault.. games have drifted away from the classic kind of MMO gameplay and is fully geared toward casual.. and i don't see that changing anytime soon. that's apparently where the money is at. I'm one of the few minority looking for a game that is both harder, and longer.

this could of been a good MMO but the fact that if a member dies then the whole round is pretty much over and u gotta start allllll over again... kinda stupid and how all dungeons are synced to your level

Wow, I cannot believe how rushed this game was.  It is years passed the original launch date.  I've heard it is actually pretty good now though.  Too bad all that original negative publicity is probably affecting sales.

Have fun PS4 owners, I'm a bit glad that it's not for the PS3

I'm not a big fan of the MMORPG genre anymore.  It's mostly filled with themepark clones that are free to play.  Final Fantasy has been one of my favorite series since I started playing Nintendo and Super Nintendo.  My favorite series was probably the Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest though and I'm still waiting for them to bring more over to the US.  I've been playing the old super famicom ones again on emulators with fan translations.  I've seen that a Dragon Quest MMORPG was released in Japan as well, but it doesn't appear it's coming to the US either.

I'm still playing the game. It's a fantastic MMORPG. The new content 2.1 patch is launching soonish and should do a lot for the game overall.

ill be interested when/if it ever goes F2P

Is it still cross platform, I am not fond of that as kb/m users can be very elitist, just look at wow and keyboard turners

@IanNottinghamX I would rather they NOT try again.  XI and XIV are enough.  We don't need anymore Final Fantasy MMOs.

@crognalsen

Yea the DQMMO was released for the original Wii and since Nintendo isn't supporting that console anymore outside Japan, it didn't make sense for SE to release it outside Japan. When it first launched, there was talk of a worldwide release, but since the Wii was already on it's last legs, SE decided against it.

Also a shame because this line of thinking prevented FF:Type-0 from being released outside Japan since Sony has stopped supporting PSP outside Japan in favor of Vita. From what I've seen, it looks great.

@thrombosis45 I got to the Current End game of the game, and yes the game is pretty mediocre. There's literally no customization among classes so all the Blackmages have the same build because you can only have 1 build. The only thing you pretty much do is recycle a dungeon over and over and over again for a special currency to buy your end game gear and that currency is capped weekly. Furthermore the last dungeon in the game for now is also capped to be done once a week.. Squire Enix is doing some fucked up shit to keep people having to play the game for months before they can get their end game gear which is the only thing you can do in the game right now.  So it's pretty much attendance to win atm. Hate it when a game doesn't let people play at their own pace.

Unlike other MMO's that rely on class and character customization for the people to have to replay the game and farm their gear and experiment with builds. You know... relying that the game is entertaining enough for people to stick around.

@thrombosis45 I can assure you it's pretty far from mediocre.  It's not F2P though, but for me I prefer that to being nickle and dime'd for everything.

@raydawg2000 It will go Ftp sooner or later its not nearly good enough to survive for a decent length of time without it.

OmegaGear
OmegaGear

@krystyla It is cross platform, but you won't find any kb/m elitism in FFXIV. Something a lot of its players love about the game is how fluent its controller UI is. While there's still your separate camps for what players prefer, there's never any arguments over it. The only complaints you'll get is that the PS3 version experiences longer load times.

@Joedgabe If you think you are anywhere near endgame, you are sadly mistaken. This game will live another 8-10 years with expansions coming out pretty frequently. If you played FFXI you would know this. This game will come out on the X1 as well, possibly the 360 too and then you will see the expansions come rolling in.

Stebsis
Stebsis

@stev69 @raydawg2000 Because FFXI went free to play because it's subscriptions aren't nearly as good as WoW for example... oh wait.

paulomunir

he's far from being the only one waiting for this; the game's nice, but not THAT nice.

Stebsis
Stebsis

@lostmyaccount @Joedgabe No, it won't be out on X1 or 360, and they've already said why. PS3, 4 and PC all share the servers, you can play together, but with Xbox Microsoft does not allow this so SE don't want to put the game on it.

stev69

@Joedgabe Agreed very mediocre, the impression i took away from this game was, that it could be any average MMO out there, nothing made it standout at all. I expect it gets the subs it does mainly because FF in general has a massive fan following anyway, if it didn't have that IP to prop it up, it would already be FTP.

Joedgabe
Joedgabe

@The_Last_Paladi @lostmyaccount @Joedgabe No it's not.. wth ? I've played my fair share of MMO's this one really falls down to the competition. Why is it so popular ? because it has a casual system for people to bot and be casual about.  Best example, Ragnarok online.. it didn't get updates often yet the already content and established gameplay and character customization was entertaining enough for people to replay the game with different characters.. this game.... nope... there's no such thing as a crit mage... or a casting speed mage.... you can improve your casting time and crit but it's not even noticeable to count, and have fun playing 8 - 10 years that game bro. I'm sure it was made for some people.

@Stebsis @stev69 @raydawg2000 Newsflash were not talking about 11 were talking about 14 and it went F2P once, there is no law that states it can't happen again.
