Final Fantasy next-gen tech demo took 12 months to make

Square Enix spent six months planning, six months creating four-minute "Agni's Philosophy" demo running on new Luminous Engine.

This summer, Square Enix showed off a next-generation Final Fantasy tech demo called "Agni's Philosophy," created using the company's proprietary Luminous Studio Engine. Now, it has been revealed that Square Enix spent an entire year creating the four-minute spot.

Kotaku translated a Game Watch report that states Square Enix spent six months planning the "Agni's Philosophy" demo before spending another six months actually developing it.

The Luminous Studio engine is currently in development at Square Enix and is planned to support game consoles, PCs, smartphones, and Web applications.

According to Square Enix, "Agni's Philosophy" is representative of the level of visual quality Square Enix is hoping to achieve with next-generation games. The demo is focused on a magic-wielding heroine name Agni and is set in a near-future world where ancient sorcery and advanced science coexist.

I don´t mind the trailer, square enix was always impressive in development and now they surpass everyone with very realistic facial expressions of the characters in tehir games, still, I think this moves more and more into the direction of MGS with all those guns and terrorists, lately square enix has been into MGS or war-games-in-general-mood as it seems. Final Fantasy should be more Final Fantasy.

dont think next gen is going to look like that at all....from what i see its marginally better than current gen systems

Of course people will immediately mistakenly interpret "took 12 months to make" as "we spent every bit of our time in those twelve months solely working on this tech demo"

Didn't even watch the video. Honestly? I don't care anymore.

Weren't we shown similar "real time tech demos" before ps3 release ? None of the developers were able to match their tech demos once the consoles came out. On another topic, Final Fantasy X was truly the last Good FF game Square enix ever made.

please square soft, dont make it an online game, and please make the lead character a male not a female

Wow, this is a really beautiful tech demo!  For a moment, I thought this is another FF game.  This took a year to finish and I thought I could do it on my own PC.  I am sooo wrong!

How many people know that Angi's Philosophy is a tech demo and not Final Fantasy XV... yet at least? How many of you also know that the luminous engine is also supposed to be able to handle with this gens PS3 (or so it's said, but they had some problems with proving as the specs of what ran the demo were next gen) and that the tech demo was run in real time and not cinematically? Lastly how many people know that "parts" of the luminous engnie is being implemented into Final Fantasy Versus XIII? Apprently not many people know one bit of this.

And what for did Square Enix bought Unreal Engine 4?

Does anyone else notice the "Stress" behind 12 months...for 4 minutes?

I hope this isn't the "Next Gen Trend" of things to come.  It seems to take longer to develop short length sequences.

Its striking how much bashing this franchise takes from a few ppl.U enter an article about final fantasy and some ppl come bashing the franchise and commend about the old days.IF U WANT TO PLAY THE OLD ONES GO AHEAD AND PLAY THEM.In fact they are so vocal that you think that they are the majority. In truth they are just a very small number. For us real fans of the franchise we always await for the next thing with big anticipation.

@Bubba_1988 Well in many cases that has not been the case. The KH an Advent Children teams are making this though, they haven't disappointed yet.

They act as if it doesn't take them long enough already to releases games. They showed us a games at the start of this generation that hasn't came out and it's the end of the generation. That's almost  8 years. Now they make something that takes even longer?

Looks decent enough. I want opening cutscene of Halo 4 quality during regular gameplay though. Anything less is unjustified imo

So that's why Final Fantasy Versus XIII never got finished, Square Enix wasted an entire year making a demo and another milking FFXIII sequels and DLC.

Yeah, great tech-demo and graphics engine...looks really cool and all...but how about the, huh I don't know, GAMEPLAY?!?

Seriously Square, I want a game that can match the heart, soul and fun of the classics. XIII was good, but not nearly as good. This looks great, but please don't forget about the real important stuff: gameplay and heart...

I am not familiar with the hardware side of console gaming, especially new consoles. What is the purpose of tech demos?

If there is one thing I have always said it's that "Final Fantasy needs to concentrate MORE on graphics and gunplay and less on story and exploration." /sarcasm

@Demonkillua Agreed. A lot of responses are too quick to vent, before seeing what this video represents.

It's a real time look at a brand new game engine.

(can't wait to see the battle system)

And, once they build the pieces and learn the ropes, they will forever have them.  So a years time spent on this, will ease real production later.

We'll see I guess, when the next game comes out.  Meanwhile...

@Xyekenvort Square Enix president said No More Non-Mainstream Games. So you can forget about having a great and epic final fantasy game where the game doesn't play itself for you. When Hironobu Sakaguchi left the company, the FF series died :(

@Xyekenvort Same here. Imagine something like Final Fantasy VI but with next-gen graphics.

@Unfallen_Satan Giving a general idea how games might look on the new tech.

However, in hindsight, tech demo's always show off a specific part of something that never gets realized on the actual system. For example, the Xbox 360 had an amazing car crash tech demo, but in reality when you look at games like Burnout Paradise that actually featured car crashes, it looked nothing like that.

So, tech demo's only give you an idea of how games might look if you know how to interpret them.

Demonkillua

@kohle36 Lol, it was announced by Yoichi Wada that the game is still in development on July 24th, 2012 via his twitter. Since that announcement it has not been long enough to actually call it vaporware. You sir, are mistaken.

kurt176

@kartelas @kurt176 Many people were thankfull, but many people werent. Thinking the game is evolving the wrong way, and i am one of them. You cant satisfie everyone i am aware of that. If i were to say to you choose 3 of your favorite FF series? Which one would you choose? Dont get me wrong, i wont judge your answers i am just curious:)

kurt176
kurt176

@kartelas No dude keep playing i know i will, after all they are Final fantasy, no matter how bad they are (in my opinion) they are still playable. But there will always be guys like me wanting more of the "oldschool" ff back so you just have to bear with that too.

kurt176
kurt176

@ryan0991 @kurt176  Dont mind female characters dude, its just that all the latest FF has one in lead. Its getting old, why not mix it up? Or let the player choose a male or female character?? And almost every female character is half naked with big boobs..so who is the sexist??

Demonkillua
Demonkillua

@kohle36 Lol, yes a tweet. Unfortunately that's all that has been giving on the game in the past year and 10? months, besides the mention of the lumious engine being implemented into Versus XIII, and that there is great news regarding Versus that they can not release... Idk what to expect, but if They can the project I can promise they won't see any of my money for their other games. The only reason I'm defensive about this because Versus is the only game this generation that I have been looking forward to as much as I am. I actually do agree, but don't wish to admit easily.

Yeah I did a mistake here but still ... EA and Activision both produce shit after shit so to me there is no difference between them.
