Far Cry 4 Is a "Significant Step Forward" Over Far Cry 3

Ubisoft creative director Alex Hutchinson says this year's open-world game will offer "more player agency" overall.

This fall's Far Cry 4 represents a "significant step forward" from 2012's Far Cry 3, creative director Alex Hutchinson says. In a new interview, Hutchinson spoke about the origins of the project and what Ubisoft needs to do to pull off a sequel with meaningful improvements.

"Work started almost immediately after Far Cry 3, and I joined a while after that," Hutchinson said in an interview with energy drink company RedBull. "The idea is always to build on the best and most successful elements from the previous game and integrate new features and ideas to make sure it’s fresh and that the game takes a significant step forward. For me, the most important things are enabling more player agency, building better tools and adding co-op so people can create more interesting player stories, and trying to make a seamless experience."

Development on Far Cry 4 is being led by Ubisoft Montreal, which is creating the game's main missions and most of the open-world, while outside studios are handling other components. For example, Red Storm Entertainment is making the competitive multiplayer, while Ubisoft Toronto and Ubisoft Shanghai are developing "a series of missions set in an all-new environment outside of the [Far Cry 4] game world." Hutchinson wouldn't say anything more, but teased that Ubisoft will show off these missions "shortly."

Also in the interview, Hutchinson explains why Ubisoft chose to set Far Cry 4 in Kyrat in the Himalayas. He said Ubisoft wanted to find a place that "challenged gameplay in a new way," and the Himalayas fit this description due to the verticality of the environment. Setting the game in the Himalayas also introduces new gameplay features like the grapple tool and the gyrocopter, which "radically change" the way people can experience the world, Hutchinson said.

Regarding Far Cry 4's main villain, Pagan Min, Hutchinson rejected the idea that he is a crazy person. "I think he's so rich and powerful in Kyrat that he doesn't operate in the same world as the rest of us." Since he's been able to do whatever he wants for decades, he sees the world in a different light, and doesn't listen when people tell him no. Min and Far Cry 4's hero, Ajay Ghale, have a untraditional dynamic, as well, Hutchinson said. In short, Min does not want to kill Ghale.

"He wants to be his buddy, and you'll find out why in the course of the game," Hutchinson said. "But we really didn't want another villain who would threaten the player and who you knew, in the end, that you would have to defeat--there's no emotion in that."

Far Cry 4 launches November 18 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. If you buy the game on PS3 or PS4 and have a PlayStation Plus subscription, you will be given ten invitations that can be sent out to PlayStation Network friends to play a free, trial version of the game's co-op mode. Asked about why this system isn't available on Xbox, Hutchinson dodged the question, saying, "We've had a close relationship with Sony on this game and it's something we built together."

I wonder will you still get more experience for stealthing outposts like in Far Cry 3, since they have this new elephant and gyro copter option.

That's like say 'next gen' is a significant step forward over last gen (PS3 / 360).

I have no doubt whatsoever to that even if Ubisoft decided to downgrade the graphics but PLEASE do not delay it, I want to play this on my holidays not during semester!

Wonder why no one has made a game set in Philadelphia?  That place is freaking scary!

Been playing the 3rd installment.  It is freaking awesome in itself.  I know Ubisoft is getting bad flak for "downgrading" their graphics, but I am super excited to play this one.

Well I'd sure as hell hope the next game in a series is an improvement over the last entry no matter how good it was.....

What he said about the villain is interesting. At least what I took from his "not crazy" statement is that this guy will be a little more sympathetic than Vaas and, especially, Hoyt. There's this perverse side of me that enjoys it when I can admire the bad guy a little bit. Straight-up evil villains are super boring.

Mathias from Tomb Raider, Frank Fontaine, Danik from Dead Space 3, Captain What's-his-Ass from Dead Space 3,  Rodrigo Borgia...all boring villains, almost as boring as the all-virtuous hero (Isaac Clarke, Lara Croft).

I don't like Ubisoft. Full stop.

Enjoy your sequel to Assassins Creed 3. How this idiot EVER got a job after that travesty is bewildering.

This brings forth a question: If I decide to game on a PC, do I have to pay to play online like xbox and playstation?

Ubisoft keep pumping out the same game with different skins constantly. Why are people excited for this? It blows my mind.

Not a fan of the Far Cry games. Saw the E3 on FC4, still not interested.  It'll be a bargain bin centerpiece next to Titanfall soon enough

I don't care, The game will have graphic quality reduced, because it's impossible to a "next gen" console fit so perfectly  the code for a PC game, and as we know, any console to date can handle two decent cards working in crossfire or SLI. And tey said that they did just that, and the console will have the same graphics as the PC version. And we all know that it's backwards, the PC will have graphics caped so console gamers can have the same experience.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that consoles are shit and this is better then that or whatever, we know a console can't compete with PC, it's just engineering, it's impossbile! And say that PC version will have the same quality is pretty much hold back the quaiity. Watch_dogs much?

Why is this listed under latest if it isn't.  Latest, means latest, which means, yeah, latest.  This place is a craphole.

The best thing going for FC4 is its environment. The location of India/Nepal/Tibet makes it a very inviting place to play mischief with warlords, an eccentric antagonist, and of course elephants !! Plus, the game looks beautiful on next gen systems. Hopefully, UBI don't dumb down this game like the way they handled Watch Dogs, which I thought was a good game with an average story. I sincerely hope UBI don't over hype this game and instead just focus on making it the best ever Far Cry ever. FC3 was a brilliant game and I loved it on PC; ran like a dream on my old GTX 570 with high-ultra settings. So more of the same please UBI. Cheers.

Loved Far Cry 3, but why on Earth did Ubi trust Far Cry 4 to the director of Assassin's Creed 3? That's the only thing that gives me pause about this game. Here's hoping he redeems himself.

Considering its the same game engine as far cry 3 and uses no new technologies its safe to say that this game hasn't progressed at all.

What's "Player Agency"? Never heard this made-up term ever.

I didn't like FarCry 2, while 3 was even a bit of entertaining, but really - if you ever played 2 or 3 who cares about the same crap in 4 no matter how technical better it will be, in the end it will be the same, drving through the world killing everyone with a weapon in hand.

After playing 3 for a few days i never could play it again ... Charakters and story wasn't bad, but doing the same missions over and over again felt very boring after a short time, a bit more variation about the gameplay would be great in 4, but we are talkin about an ubisoft game, they don't know how to make different games .... as every action game of them feels like the same crap.

But i will give 4 a try, its still one of their better games and not comin every year like AC.

I would really like to have a new Anno, but not the same way it ever was - i want a creative modus and stuff that makes it it needed (like the mods for anno, just better)

So far the only games i am lookin forward are Bloodborne (what is really sad as i think i will never play it - paying over 500$ for one game ... no thanks SONY) and Xenoblade Chroncisles 2 (which i hope won't take a few years more)

Games reached a damn point in gaming history - its just like games are now only made for the stupid crowds. really really sad.

When i was young the best games of history came out for more then a decade and one game was better then the other - no one game is more stupid then the other and thats going on and on and i dont see it to change.

I nearly only played classics or souls games in the last 3 years ... good not everything is gone - but really something like the Souls series would have been normal in the 90s ...

@Vienreich I think Far Cry 4 will definitely worth waiting for a price drop if anything. Far Cry 3 single player was pretty good. Best Ubi game I've played since AC 2.

Tranula

@Vienreich  You obviously haven't played all the Far Cry's.  They are all so much different.

bradh094
bradh094

@Vienreich True, and as long as they have sheep buying the same shit every year the gaming industry won't get any better, but they are too blind to see that. They'd rather buy the newest CoD game every year than take a chance with something different. These people are fake gamers in my opinion.

@Vienreich  Because Far cry 2 and 3 are two of my favorite FPS. Plus, both games are pretty dramatically different in both environment and gameplay.

@StOoGiEmEiStEr  So using the Cryengine is a bad thing?  It looks better then most "next-gen" titles out!

Sonic4545

@Lykanthropie Yep, it's sad how similar Assassins Creed and Far Cry are to each other.  Add in all the repretition and their games are very disappointing to me.

Sindroid
Sindroid

@Lykanthropie Seems like you have discovered the Ubisoft way of making games. Their games are big and brilliant but they always evolve around the same pattern. Same tedious missions, borefest after a while. All their games turns out this way.. Assassins creed is another. The only thing that compels is the main story. The rest is just boring side quests you never bother complete anyways..

In the end it all feels like an assembly line game like all others. Big and massive, but with no soul for the content.

I agree, FC3 was a one time game.. After finishing it, i never played it again.

bookfiend
bookfiend

@Tranula @Vienreich Yes, and if a franchise has a series, that means they're doing something right and making profit. If games don't have sequels, they're not that successful.

Vienreich

@bookfiend btw... I think it was the most stupid use of the word "ignorance" I've seen in my life. I don't think you even know what it means

Vienreich
Vienreich

@bookfiend Generic minded dudes like you of course love these games. They change a few skins, upgrade the engine somewhat and the millions like you rush to buy buy buy. It's thanks to mindless drones like you we have all these crap games

StOoGiEmEiStEr
StOoGiEmEiStEr

@Tranula @StOoGiEmEiStEr Each new sequel of a game should innovate on the last one, not copy paste with the same engine (cough like cod) a good example is doom and UT.

StOoGiEmEiStEr
StOoGiEmEiStEr

@DocSanchez @StOoGiEmEiStEr Considering i have finished Far Cry 3 and Blood Dragon and played far cry 2 and 1 back when they were released, what could they possibly innovate on apart from a technology viewpoint?

Tranula
Tranula

@bookfiend @darkprince2  Free free free.  I like you, you don't let the big console companies dictate your gaming experiences like "fan boys" do.  I truly feel sorry for them.  I gave up telling them that P.C. was the way to go along time ago.

bookfiend
bookfiend

@Vienreich In all honesty, it's just a video game. Why do you feel the need to "teach us a lesson" about something that's just entertainment.

Ignorant=unaware

You are unaware that Far Cry 4 will be the first Far Cry game I will ever play. That in itself disrupts your rambling on about me being a "generic" "mindless drone." Yet I'm still sure you'll fire back with another ridiculous comment being the typical person you are.

GhostHawk196
GhostHawk196

@Vienreich @bookfiend  Recent Ubisoft games all have a same sweet formula. You unlock the map which unlocks new weaponry which makes your game more fun. It works and every new game has a beautiful new setting. I'm not saying Watch Dogs was a better game than GTA5 but I sure as hell had twice as much fun playing it than GTA5. Innovation isn't everything because if everyone was forced to play Portal 1/2, the vast majority would probably not have had a very good time.

Tranula
Tranula

@StOoGiEmEiStEr @Tranula  I don't know, from the gameplay, It looks leaps and bounds beyond #3.  Are you sure it utilizes the same engine?

Deadlysyns87
Deadlysyns87

@Tranula @bookfiend @darkprince2 PC is not the way to go for everyone and i am getting sick of all the Console vs Console and PC vs Console crap were all gamers and no one is better then someone else because of where they choose to game.

Tranula
Tranula

@Deadlysyns87 @Tranula @bookfiend @darkprince2  I know its not, Im just saying PC is the way to go if you care for bleeding edge graphics and pin point accuracy in shooters.  PS4 looks nice, XBOXUno has its moments.  They have their place, but don't expect them to last a whole decade this time.  They came out of the gate underpowered.  I give them a 6 year life span if they're lucky.
