Ewan McGregor on Returning to the Star Wars Saga in The Force Awakens [SPOILERS]

Star Wars: The Force Awakens may have leaned heavily on the original Star Wars movies and largely ignored the prequel trilogy, but there was one prequel actor who was brought back for a small appearance. Ewan McGregor returned to the franchise to provide the voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and now the actor has talked about the experience.

As EW reports, McGregor appeared this week on Jimmy Kimmel Live. "It was very late in the day. I'd been waiting for the call to come for two years," he told Kimmel. "I thought maybe they've lost my agent's phone number. Then I got a call from JJ [Abrams, director] just shortly before the film was released. He asked me to come in and said, 'I'd love you to be a part of it.'"

As Abrams previously revealed in December, one word of McGregor's line was actually spoken by the late Alec Guinness, who played Kenobi in the original trilogy. "The line is, 'Rey, these are your first steps,'" McGregor explained. "But they got Alec Guinness to do 'Rey,' which is extraordinary because he's not alive anymore.

"They got a line of him as Obi-Wan Kenobi saying 'afraid,' and cut the 'A' and the 'D' off. So Alec Guinness is saying 'Rey,' and I'm saying, 'These are your first steps.'"

To date, The Force Awakens has made more than $1.95 billion worldwide. While this makes it it the third highest grossing film of all time, it is still some way short of the record set by 2009's Avatar, which earned $2.8 billion. As The Wrap reports, 55 percent of the Force Awakens' total gross has come from international audiences, which is relatively low compared to many modern blockbusters. By comparison, 73 percent of Avatar's gross was made abroad.
