Evolve Wins Best of Gamescom 2014 Award, Other Winners Announced

Super Smash Bros. For 3DS wins Best Mobile Game, PES 2015 wins Best Sports Game over FIFA 15.

2K Games' 4-versus-1 first-person monster hunting game Evolve won the Best of Gamescom 2014 Award, Gamescom organizers have announced. It also won in the most categories. In addition to winning the Best of Gamescom Award, the expert jury named it the Best Console Game Microsoft Xbox, Best Action Game, Best PC Game, and Best Online Multiplayer Game.

Excuse me, but what? I've been at Gamescom and I dont see how Risen 3 wins RPG. If anyone then its the Witcher. They showed us 45 mins or so of gameplay and what not. Im not even a witcher fan (didnt like previous games), but c'mon Risen didnt show anything special at Gamescom and what they did show wasnt in any way amazing.

We already know how dumb the "voting/nomination" process is for Gamescom. No Dragon Age, no Witcher (and I'm not even a fan), no Destiny, almost no Shadow of Mordor. Wow.

For me it's Smash Bros all the way; Evolve looks like it will get boring fast, just like most other PS/Xbox games nowadays.

Evolve is the game that looks refreshing and new, but probably and most likely simplistic and basic to it's core, and ultimately, a waste of money.

How can you claim something is the best based on trailers?

I was so suprised to see Risen 3 won the RPG award. Where is the Dragon Age Inquisiton and The Witcher 3?

i really like the way evolve looks, but considering  i have no friends to play with and hate the idea of playing with strangers i will probably never purchase the game.

The Evil Within was nominated in quite a few places and won the best console game Sony Playstation award. Perhaps it's better than it appears to be, like I used to think about Shadow of Mordor, which was also nominated a few times.

Somewhat interesting that LittleBigPlanet 3 - a PS3/4 game - beat the new Skylanders - a multiplatform game - for best family game.

Huh...well I must be getting out of touch with gamers, most of those aren't really my thing.  Although, Super Smash Bros is looking awesome, I might finally have to pick up a WiiU.

Best PC Game should be Star Citizen

I don't get how Evil won best game on the ps, but evolve won in every other category.

I've played too many AAA games in the last 10 years and paid full price for them only to be done with them after 6-20 hours. They would market most of these games with a really long list of maps, weapons, and skill perks as well as talk about how great the graphics are. Then I've noticed that most of the games that have given me the most joy in the last decade are those that focused on simple game mechanics and were created to be addicting and played for hundreds of hours.

Games like Call of Duty, Battlefield 3/4, Titanfall, and probably The Division in the future, always put the emphasis on "look at all the things you can do in this game" but once I get my hands on them I realize that all the special effects, big environments, abilities, and gimmick features don't hold up and I regret buying the game at full price. There are so many things that factor into my enjoyment of the games that are hard to promote. How do you market "hey, respawn locations will be great in this game and you won't spawn under a grenade or in the line of fire" or "these environments are great because we've designed areas that are great for every approach you wanna take?" No, it's easier to talk about how you can play with 100 people at once or track your kill-death stats on your smartphone at work.

Then I play a game like Evolve (the Alpha). It's not trying to be ArmA 3. It's not trying to be Battlefield 4. It's a simple game where players only have 4-6 abilities and their 2 weapons. The designers only gave us 2 maps to try out and I was very impressed because I saw the little details of the map and how much time they put into designing the levels to provide hundreds of strategies for winning. Throwing 20 ingredients into a pot doesn't always make a great stew.

I have a large collection of games I've played and got bored of. Then I have a small collection of games that I play almost every day because of their amazing weapon balance, class balance, map design, and Evolve will be added to my small list of games that were tweaked and polished hundreds of times until there was nothing left to improve. My short list will be Evolve, Team Fortress 2 (600+ hours), Left 4 Dead series (150+ hours), and Counter-Strike series (1500+ hours) and GTA5 when it comes out on PC.

Over the years I've stopped getting hyped up for games and I look at previews without the rose-colored glasses. I've just been burned too many times and I'm glad that a game like Evolve is getting recognized for it's simple, but fun game mode and it's wonderful execution as demonstrated with the playable Alpha version.

Maybe I'll look into it.

Nintendo have been getting so much praise recently.... people are starting to admit the Wii U is good and stuff.... and still they can't get its sales high enough because "gamers" these days only care about shooters despite all the praise they are getting....

It is really sad.

Risen 3 won best RPG? :D

I'm so tempted to try it, because of the potential gothic feel to it...but still...im pretty sure there are better rpgs around, which were playable at gamescom :p

And where is "The Witcher 3"?

@namitokiwa Looks like none of them participated in the competition, hence the ludicrous result. Might as well call the whole competition a sham, since the other categories can't be trusted either.

@grin89 It sounds like you might be the perfect monster for everyone to hunt down.  You don't need friends, you can go that role alone.  Join the big alpha test at www.EvolveGame.com/BigAlpha and show the hunters what you've got:

@Rooten Some of these awards have really weak or odd competition, which is why a game like Risen 3 (not bad, but not great either) gets to win.

@TheBigBadGRIM I think you shouldn't focus so much on the PR. It's PR for a reason, and should mostly be ignored. There's plenty of people who had sunken hundreds/thousands of hours into BF, COD, Titanfall, so there's nothing wrong with them. Those games are just not for you - as simple as that. Just like I played TF2 for about 10 hours, got bored of it, and went back to BF3, which I have played for over 200 hours.

john840804

@TheBigBadGRIM Can't agree more with you. Games like LoL kept me playing for like 1000+ hours. I'm really looking forward to Evolve, too.

Trashed by who? Reputable sources like Edge gave it quite postive coverage. IGN are casuals. The game is good.

@jack00 Really reviewers are reviewing a game that is 2 months out i know they get early copies but thats super early

skyke101

@metallinatus I think if WiiU wants to be successful, they really need to start to dish out new IPs, all they have been throwing recently are nothing but old IPs like Zelda, Mario, etc, not that its bad, but people might want to try other exclusive that is worth to play. I know they have some other good games on WiiU too, but I guess Nintendo market is only good on their handheld like DS and such

hystavito
hystavito

@metallinatus  Blame Nintendo for gamers not being interested in the WiiU, don't blame the gamers :).

divinejester
divinejester

@metallinatus I like how "people" are saying the Wii U is good and then "gamers" are trashing it because it has no FPS. What does people or gamers mean? How many individuals does that refer to? If these people claim its good would not sales than go up? Because if its just someone saying something positive but not buying the system what is the point.

This is what I got from your comment. Metallinatus - "Someone once said something about something, but someone else said something else, and stuff."

You should really try politics.

Deadlysyns87
Deadlysyns87

@metallinatus Gamers don't only care about shooters. Wii U doesn't have much coming up that will attract new players which is what they need.

@Deadlysyns87 @jack00  Well I.. urg.. d... what ?

metallinatus

@divinejester "If these people claim its good would not sales than go up? "

That is the very point of the whole comment.

We see - at least at the internet, people saying the Wii U is worth now and that their E3 was the best and stuff like this....

These "people" started to recognize that the Wii U became a good platform.... but that same people still do not buy it and that is really sad....

I mean, yeah, people do not need to buy everything that they say it's good, but in a moment where Nintendo i needing these sales.... that is sad.

lonewolf1044
lonewolf1044

@Deadlysyns87 @metallinatus  I own a Wii and the Wii U and the reason I do is because of Super Mario brothers but as far as the other games for it and it is a preference there is not enough other games that are enticing. The Wii U is a nice system but Nintendo has not yet taken full advantage of what it can do.

I thought about it, and while I'm sure a bundle is on the way, I couldn't help myself lol. Wind Waker HD bundle was a great choice too though!
