EverQuest, H1Z1 Dev Trademarks "The Darkened Sea" and "Altar of Malice"

Sony Online Entertainment scoops up pair of trademarks for unannounced downloadable RPGs.

EverQuest and H1Z1 developer Sony Online Entertainment may be working on a pair of new role-playing games, if new trademark applications are any indication.

On July 2, SOE filed a pair of trademark applications with the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) for "The Darkened Sea" and "Altar of Malice." Both are described as downloadable RPGs and are registered to SOE's office in San Diego, California.

The Darkened Sea and Altar of Malice appear to be unannounced games or expansions to previously released titles. We have reached out to SOE for comment and will update this story with anything we hear back.

In addition to continued support for Planetside 2 and other back catalog games, SOE's upcoming software lineup includes games like EverQuest Next and H1Z1.

They're almost certainly Everquest and Everquest 2 expansions.

They are likely to be expansions for Everquest or something.

All I know is I really, really pity the poor schmuck that has to keep an eye on the USPTO paperwork to find this stuff out.  That.... can't be exciting.

We salute you, poor schmuck.

I recall hearing rumors on the official EverQuest forums that the next EQ expansion was going to revisit zones that were part of The Buried Sea expansion. Maybe The Darkened Sea is going to be the official name of this expansion? Just my speculation - only time will tell.

I haven't tried their other F2P games, but I had a lot of fun in PlanetSide 2. Looking forward to trying H1Z1

@NightlyOne  That would be cool. I would love to play a RPG with all the classes and lore from EQ. I play on 1999 and have a 32 or 33 bard on the blue server. Old school EQ is one of my all time favorites.

@AzureBonds76 @NightlyOne haha, I played on p1999. It was a nice little jog down memory lane. EQ's ultimate problem was that they never recycled content. I hate to imagine how many empty zone you'd find on the live servers nowadays. Certainly wouldn't expect to go to Lower Guk and have to call a camp check :)

@Ayato_Kamina_1 @AzureBonds76 @NightlyOne I touched 1999 for a bit, and you're right, it's definitely a nice stroll down memory lane. Managed to get an enchanter to level 20. But, kinda lost interest because I don't have nearly as much time to do serious grinding like I used to back in the old days. Growing up sucks. But, I've been playing on the live servers on and off for the past year or so. It's definitely more casual now compared to the old days, but it does scratch that EQ itch I have.

Funny you should mention recycled content - SOE is actually doing a special over the summer called "Hardcore Heritage". They're rotating through old-world dungeons and temporarily beefing them up to higher-level standards. Right now, Cazic-Thule and Blackburrow are set up for levels 80+. Come Wednesday, they're going back to their regular levels, while Lower Guk and Unrest are getting the steroid injections, suited for levels 85+. Crushbone, Permafrost, Nagafen's Lair, and Castle Mistmoore are also going to be on the rotation in August.
