Ecco The Dolphin spiritual successor Kickstarter fails

Campaign misses $665,000 goal; Ecco creator reveals Little Blue project.

by

The Kickstarter campaign for Big Blue, an oceanic adventure game being made by team members who created the Ecco the Dolphin series for Sega, has failed to meet its goal.

Despite the Kickstarter failure, the creators will still work on a small-scale version of Big Blue.

The page raised $55,764, with its target goal being $665,000. Creator Ed Annunziata revealed his contingency plan in the form of a project called Little Blue. The game will serve as a small sampling of the original Big Blue project and requires less funding.

Due to its smaller scale, the game will have fewer environments and creatures compared to the original project. If the funding for Little Blue is a success, the game will be out for free and will have a link that will bring players to an additional Kickstarter for a full-fledged Big Blue.

The date for the Little Blue Kickstarter has yet to be confirmed. For more information on what could have been, check out GameSpot's coverage on Big Blue.

Gamespot coverage on this kickstarter was piss poor, the original video piece on it was posted with 5 days left in the campaign.  Way to support a peice of videogame history Gamespot....

And for the record, I agree that doing a Steam/ PSN/ XBLA version would get far greater support than IOS.  At least do android/ steam/ ouya or whatever that droid console is.

Really Gamespot?

I just put up a KickStarter for a game I actually want to see (and others too) on an article for a failed KickStarter and you auto-delete it?

Really?

I expect that from IGN...but not from you folks.

The Game Was the KickStarter for Jagged Alliance Flashback by-the-way for anyone interested in it far more than iOS Echo the Dolphin.

When a game on  kickstarter or anywhere else says IOS and mobile- that is the point where I stop reading and go away

I'm guessing he already made little blue and is trying to tease support.

Limiting it to ios is of course going to not get you much money. Release it on android, PC and maybe consoles or handholds and you could make a heap of money. ios only means no money from me.

I actually considered funding this project, but then I heard it was just for the iJunk. Sorry, not gonna happen. If it was for PC or Android, maybe.

Even though I know this Kickstarter project exist, I ain't backing it. I just don't like my underwater adventure to be limited to iOS and mobile phone. If it ain't coming to console exclusively, then it's already a failure to me.

wut mobile game? pfff no wonder it failed

I wasn't able to donate since I work abroad and get paid in a closed currency, but if Big Blue really was only supposed to be a mobile game I hope the developers take a lesson from this as people want a full on game.  I have no problem with a mobile version of Ecco, as long as it is on all the mobile platforms and not just iOS, but a major funding game should be on consoles and PC.

I think the issue was that nobody wanted it to be a mobile game. And limiting to iOS would have been a huge mistake. Maybe he should try to get it greenlit on Steam.

Thats kinda like watching an ex come crawling back but only to be rejected. Sad.

$665k for a glorified mobile game, that's insane. Ecco was one of my favorites for Genesis growing up as a kid, only second to Sonic, so it sucks to see it fail like this. How could they even expect such a high price when all they showed us was a potential 2.5D tablet game beside a load of stock sealife footage? Ridiculous, the games concept sounded fun too.

I read Ecco The Dolphin spiritual successor and got all excited. Then I read the rest of the title. Thanks for raising my hopes and dashing them just as quickly. Good job, sir.

Ecco the Dolphin was one of more unique and also challenging games I've played back in the days of the Sega MegaDrive/Genesis. I wasn't able to play the sequels though.

It would have been nice to see an Ecco game in the XBOX360, or PS3.

Kickstarter giveth, but Kickstarter also taketh away. None of these failed kickstarter projects seem bad or ripoffs, but there aren't enough people to support them all. There isn't enough media space either, so they get passed over for other news stories and while people wait for the first bunch of kickstarter successes to be released, the later kickstarter attempts are forgotten and fail. It's like a point of saturation has occurred and maybe the first wave of kickstarter successes need to become financial successes before new kickstarter projects can succeed.

Poor ecco. Here I thought any big kickstarter project could get a ton of money, like the 2 separate projects about girls whining while gaming. hm.. I would like to see a remake for EVO personally.

Such excellent reporting skills.

I was a backer on the project and outside smaller sites, NO big sites reported on it.

Gamespot for instance, didn't report on it (but did more then one time for both Torment and Shroud of the Avatar), they haven't even talked about Camelot Unchained either .

Though I bet if CU fails gamespot will have a story about it failing, all while ignoring when it started , just like the little blue.

I don't expect gamespot/ign to report on every new kickstarter, but I'd think a game like the spiritual successor to Ecco and a new mmo from the DAOC creator are just as big "news" worthy as the Torment kickstarter or Shroud of the Avatar, and I don't get why GS/IGn and big sites ignore them.

Really do hope the Little Blue makes it and attracts more people to the game.

Played it in the 90s as a kid my best friend rented it and it was a good game. I can see why it failed do not allot of kids now in days know about the series and it pretty much went off the map for so long so unless some of us older players talk to them about these games they wont ever know they even existed.

I knew about it but really never liked the old ones. I got C-War, For the Sleep, and Jagged Alliance to support anyway.

This is the first time I have even heard of this project. If you were to play as an octopus or a shark, I'd be in.

I believe most fans weren't even aware this was going on... and that's a shame. Ecco and underwater adventures in general are really scarce, so it would've been kinda cool if this had worked out.

What's even sadder is they didn't even get 10% of what they intended. Ouch.

Such a shame, but I would have preferred a fleshed out ECCO game on current or next-gen systems instead of an iOS thing. ECCO deserves greatness.

@leeko_link umm what? it would be almost impossible to kickstart a console game the payments to microsft or sony are just too high

@comb5 who said it was limited to iOS?the game was built in unity and its exportalble to all plataforms and nowhere it said it was only been released for iOS not they will now go for it but only because the others failed

dribblesbarbax
dribblesbarbax

@comb5 Had no idea it was going to be a mobile game too. No wonder it failed to reach its goal. People who mainly play on IOS devices probably havent heard of Kickstarter or Ecco The Dolphin let alone both of them.

burgeg

@comb5 Oh this was supposed to be a mobile game? Fuck that. Nothing of value was lost. If someone decides to try and get a real ecco game going on PSN/XBLA/Steam I'll support it. I do not support garbage mobile gaming. I'm glad this failed now.

@Stiler I don't think you should blame Gamespot on this one.  This game did not do great mainly because it wasn't that appealing.  I mean for one it the project talked about little blue and big blue when it should have went all big in the first place.  What does this even mean really?  Have a kickstarter for the little blue project, then once it is successful, have another one for big blue?

No one is at fault for this failure other than the Producer of this project..

@dribblesbarbax @Dragon_Nexus yeah that was like with me and Jessica Alba, a lot of fun while it lasted but religious differences and fighting over the temp control ... well it didn't work out at the time, shame too. Oh well heard she got all clingy and shit .. and I needs my time , after all this battlestar galactica fan fiction doesn't write itself.
