EA drops Tiger Woods, confirms next-gen PGA Tour game

Publisher confirms new game coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and mobiles will not carry Tiger Woods' name for first time since 1999.

by

EA Sports today confirmed a new PGA Tour game is in development and revealed it will not feature iconic golfer Tiger Woods for the first time since the franchise debuted in 1999. The developer and Tiger Woods have made a mutual decision to end their relationship, EA Sports said in a statement.

"We've always been big fans of Tiger and we wish him continued success in all his future endeavors," EA Sports VP of Golf Daryl Holt said.

Woods was the most dominant player in professional golf during the 2013 season. He won five times on tour--including at The Players--was named Player of the Year, and topped the money list, taking home more than $8.5 million in winnings during the season.

EA Sports said its partnership with the PGA Tour "remains strong" and EA will remain the exclusive developer of professional golf games.

The developer also shared the first screenshot of the new PGA Tour game--in development for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and mobiles--and teased that the title will allow for greater customization.

"EA Sports golf fans have always loved authentic courses and players, but they've also asked for more choice and customization in how and where they play," Holt said. "We're working on a new approach to deliver the best golf experience to our fans--we think you'll love it, and so we’re excited to share the first screenshot of our next generation golf game currently in development."

No release window was provided for the new PGA Tour game. EA will report earnings for its latest financial period tomorrow, October 29, where more information may be shared.

A report from Kotaku in April suggested EA had planned to outsource Tiger Woods PGA Tour 15, but later decided to scrap the game altogether, making 2014 the first year since 1999 EA will not ship a game in the series.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 shipped in March for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It includes a number of franchise-firsts, including night golf, LPGA support, and a Legends of the Majors mode that allows players to travel back in virtual time to compete against icons like Bobby Jones and Jack Nicklaus.

Great.  Now EA just needs to drop PGA and maybe the world can start enjoying great golf games again.  On PC even.

I remember he had a game that was on a cereal box back in the late '90s. That was a good box of cereal, whatever it was.

EA,here is what i dont like about your golf games:
Tons of DLC Parcours
Online related achievements which will be unobtainable after 2-3 years coz you shut down that servers.

Here's for hoping that this could lead to a non EA made golf game not only for consoles but also PC again. (and yes, i'm aware of WGT and Shot online, but can't stand either)

It'll be interesting to see who grabs the Tiger license.

Golf is quite expensive so I can see why someone would play a golf game for that reason, but much of the experience of playing golf is lost in the couch/chair, even with motion controlled mechanics included.

I lost interest in the game once they started allowing you to curve the ball AFTER you had hit it. Curving it should only be done as part of striking the ball. That is golf.

Why does the game need Tiger Woods? Aren't fans of the game fans of 'golf' more so than Tiger Woods? I'll never understand celebrity worship...

I don't even give a crap about golf, but that seems like big news.

He'll be unlockable. You just need to complete a lengthy dating-sim portion of the game.

Did they drop him cause of all the bitches? That's old news.

It's about time. He was a fad, then had a scandal. Time to move forward. Besides, he looks like an elf and a fish had a baby.

So that means no "South Park" version of Tiger Woods golf? =(

Smart choice if you ask me, why would they wanna pay extra money just to have his name in the title? I suppose it's marketing, and a lot of kids will buy stuff just because it has a certain athlete's name, but let's be honest, if you want a golf game, where else are you gonna go?

Good job EA sounds like BF4 is already messed up. Way to keep that track record intact. What a joke. How oh how do you sleep at night? No morals whatsoever. My guess.

Don't care if Tiger is on the cover or not but if they add a course creator and let people share courses online then I'll buy it. It has gotten boring playing the same courses over and over. They won't though because that might have a negative impact on sales of there overpriced dlc.

Tiger woods should team up with a smartphone company and just make Golf Apps.Games and productivity apps with his seal of approval. You'll make a hell of a lot more money selling a $1 app than you will selling copies of the game on home consoles.

Just make better sports games this gen. I don't care if Scooby Doo is on the cover of Madden, you craps!

@Kayweg It says in the article that EA is the exclusive dev of PGA golf.

@spartanx169x Lol, afterwards? That sounds like old Super Mario games where you could jump forwards into the air off a ledge and then return to it while in midair. It makes sense as a platforming mechanic, but a golf game?

@bluefox755 Tiger Woods is just the poster boy, they'll find another person to fill his spot soon enough or maybe they'll even make the bold move of *not* having a person on the box cover. EA Sports, it seems, will outlive most athletes.

@so_hai Or perhaps he will have his own mode called "18 Ho(l)es".

@mickyfinn84 Yeah, can't let amateurs give out stuff for free that's better/different than what the company itself offers. That's why I love mods, endless alternatives.

@HartPuncher Microsoft, Sony and Apple are guilty of making shitty decisions, but they pale in comparison to the turd that is EA. Just when you start to like them they make a asinine decision that blows every new-found good will you may have developed for them.

EA = worst video game company in America

@VodooYes, but you can make a golf game without the PGA license, just as you can make a football game with out the FIFA license for example ;)

@Hurvl @bluefox755 I have only a passing interest in these games but the included courses are a far more compelling draw than the included professionals.

@Slim_Lyrics @HartPuncher explain, if you can, but Id bet you cant. You dont like EA because the internet told you not to. Go ahead, bend over, reach waaaay up inside yourself and see what BS justification you can pull into the light of day. Let me guess: a stupid internet survey about "The worst company in world" that actually has facebook pages devoted to encouraging people to vote against EA because, again, the internet thinks its cool? And before you crap out the ever convincing refuge of internet retards everywhere "what are you, an EA fanboy?", let me head your stupidity off at the pass. I am a "fanboy" of objective reasoning, critical thinking and forming my own opinion based on facts. I'll wait while you Google those concepts but Im sure Ill be waiting a long time as you struggle to figure out what everyone else thinks you should think about such difficult topics.

@skabb15

EA is the worst company in America, worst than Citibank. I think it's worse to make bad games than get people out of their homes.

@stonewall001 @skabb15 Online passes still in play. I'm just pissed because I got the game 3 or 4 days ago just to find out the online is very buggy and EA knew about this 6 months ago, said a patch was there to fix issues, listed the issue, and still no patch. I think that is BS.

stonewall001
stonewall001

@skabb15 I believe they have gotten rid of their online passes, haven't really been keeping up to what EA does just because I don't find most of their games interesting. :P

stonewall001
stonewall001

@skabb15 EA is a bad company because of its anti consumer policies such as always online drm and online passes. There is good reason to dislike EA and the other companies as well. If you are such a fan of objective reasoning and critical thinking you should be able to easily see why people dislike EA. If they hate EA more than the other companies that is their choice, those companies do offer more so people are more likely to overlook their "flaws". You sound like one of those people who uses the word bandwagon as an insult because a majority of people have the same opinion about a certain subject and the reasons to dislike EA are very obvious that no one really should have to point them out. You also give off the impression that you think because your opinion is different from that of the majority it makes you smarter, it doesn't, grow up.

Deadlysyns87

@skabb15 EA refuses to listen to what we tell them we want and continue to try and milk us for all our money which i must add is like every other company but the fact that EA refuses to listen to what we want we have a right to dislike them
