EA cancels free-to-play Command & Conquer game, closes studio

[UPDATE] Publisher cans upcoming game, closes Victory Games.

by

[UPDATE] Electronic Arts has closed Victory Games, the publisher told GameSpot.

"This does mean the Victory Games team will be disbanded. Wherever possible, we are working to help these talented people find other opportunities with EA," a representative said.

The original story is below.

Electronic Arts today canceled its free-to-play Command & Conquer game that was in development at Victory Games in Los Angeles, California.

"Your feedback from the alpha trial is clear: We are not making the game you want to play. That is why, after much difficult deliberation, we have decided to cease production of this version of the game," the developer wrote on its website. "Although we deeply respect the great work done by our talented team, ultimately it’s about getting you the game you expect and deserve."

Victory Games will refund any and all money players spent in the beta, the developer said.

According to one developer (via Polygon), not only is Command & Conquer canceled, but Victory Games has also closed its doors. An Electronic Arts representative was not immediately available to comment.

The game, simply called Command & Conquer, was announced in December 2011 as Command & Conquer: Generals 2, and was later rebranded a free-to-play, multiplayer-focused platform. Though the game in its present form is no more, Victory Games said it is looking into how it can "get the game back on track."

"We believe that Command & Conquer is a powerful franchise with huge potential and a great history, and we are determined to get the best game made as soon as possible," the developer said. "To that end, we have already begun looking at a number of alternatives to get the game back on track. We look forward to sharing more news about the franchise as it develops. Thank you again for your participation and support."

EA reports earnings for its latest financial period today, where additional information about the cancellation of Command & Conquer and the status of Victory Games may be provided.

So the last 2 or 3 years there have been about 4 rts games worth looking at:  Stronghold 3, Total War: Rome 2, Planetary Annih., and this one.  Stronghold 3 had too many glitches that it never had a chance.  Total War: Rome 2 I havn't played yet, and I don't hear much about it.  PA is looking decent, but hasn't been released yet technically.  And now this rts game gets canceled.

So the fps genre gets about 26 decent games to choose from a year (okay maybe exaggerating a little, but not much), and the rts genre gets maybe 2 -- if we're lucky lol.  And the one out of two this year gets canceled......

RTS genre I miss you :(  I won't give up on it though.  This news is a tad bit surprising though, seeing as how EA probably has millions to sink into any game it wants to.

You have got to be KIDDING ME!!!!

"The news of GENERALS-2 coming was the BEST in the world"

"The news of GENERALS-2 cancelled is the WORST in the world"

I cant imagine the amount of fans that will be disappointed. GENERALS was so unique and dear to our hearts.  RIP

I'm lost for words, I'm not surprised at the story but I am genuinely shocked at the incompetence of the EA executives who clearly steered the C&C franchise in a direction that none of the fans wanted and are now forced to cancel the project, close the studio and kill the franchise off for a while at least. If they had just listened to their fans and customers and worked to give them what they wanted from the beginning instead of trying to milk them, they could've made a lot of money and pleased their fans. I'm quite happy to see EA fail seeing the utter contempt and lack of respect they have for their customers.

My heart goes out to the devs. This looks like another example of EA telling players whAt they want to play and then making excuses when their ideas backfire... Typical

Geez....after the horrible CnC4 I actually thought Generals 2 would be good..then they changed it to F2P. Now it's gone...so sad

QUOTE from one of the devs: "This isn’t official or anything, but you probably saw that our whole team got the ax.  I hope you understand that we at VG all were dedicated to making a game for all of you to play, and that the press release line was total b.s.  It was NOT any feedback from the alpha that shut this project down but just petty corporate politics and shenanigans."

EA = the monsanto corp. of game world

One word comes to mind, Corporate Business. Just like the movie business, to these guys in suit, it's only maths and business. Smaller companies will have to find a way back in somehow and bring back the innovative games we want.

ah, the days of Red Alert 2 and Diablo, great pc games but, times have changed, I no longer look at the pc for playing games and sadly the console comtrollers were no good for strategy games. I look forward to play strategy games again in the future, maybe with the next generation machines, that would be nice. Maybe the touchpad on the on the PS4 controller can be used for that and, certainly, the Wii U controller could be perfect for strategy games, if only those japs saw the light...

Uh, did they ever consider maybe changing the product just a little bit to meet the expectations of their userbase? Straight up cancelling it seems a bit weird.

I am tired of all these franchises that I've been growing up with being butchered by EA. First it was SimCity, and now it's C&C. Why do developers sell themselves to greedy publishers like this? I honestly hope EA goes bankrupt so that the rights for these beloved franchises will be up for grabs. Looks like they are well on their way butchering Battlefield since all of the DLC has already been announced and they are already talking about Battlefield 5.

They didn't make the SimCity everyone wanted but that didn't stop them from screwing people by selling it to them anyway.

So happy this game got cancelled. Free-to-Play is just code word for Pay-to-Win.

C&C franchise died for me when C&C4 came out.

Way to support your developer EA!!!  Command them to make a game a certain way.  It doesn't conquer the masses in beta.  Close the doors.

Hey EA, since you are "listening to feedback", do us all a favor and SHUT DOWN your entire business, not just the Victory Games studio.

We told you LONG AGO we wants Generals 2, but nooooooooo, you wanted fucking F2P so you can micro-transaction our asses off.

Just go die already so you can stop ruining beloved franchises and companies with your boundless greed. Assholes.

The original "FIGHT, WIN, PREVAIL" track still rings in my head. That was the glory years of C&C.

prats93

Im sensing that there was an internal conflict between EA and the devs. EA: "you better fuckin put microtransaction and make it pay2win."

Devs: "Never".

Bummer to see how this franchise has been cheapened over the years.  I'm sure many others like me, have very fond memories of playing this game with friends as a young teen.  Oddly enough, one of the things that I really remember standing out about the original C&C was the incredible INSTALL sequence of the game-  which was like a cinema in itself, and was pretty unusual for its time.  RIP.  Let this franchise die.

The statement they wrote says it all, this wasn't the game that people wanted to play.  Command and Conquer fans want traditional command and conquer, the sooner EA realizes this the better off they will be.

Something is wrong today when a developer with one of the worlds biggest publishers at the helm, cant carry the torch of the success made by some computer geeks in a garage.

@redman919 yeah, C7C 4 was absolutely horrible..... all of the games up to that one were ranging from EPIC, to an ok game lol....but 4 was horrible

@001011000101101 Costs and budget vs. possible final income. F2P games are cheap to produce but very expensive to maintain. (Almost nobody knows that).
I would love to see another C&C like the old ones.

it looks like they just needed an excuse and blamed people opinions to get these guys out of a job. Disgraceful EA.

@Lord_Vader you mean "why do greedy developers sell themselves to publishers like this?". Either way, EA has made some great franchises recently, such as dead space and mirror's edge.

EA can make great games, if they want to.

@Whiskey3romeo It was Riccitello leading EA that time as far as i know. He never care about anything at the first place.

Kh'indjal, they should just stick at that, not buying out great games and destroying it. Westwood was great, why buy them out to close them down ? If you like them, just partner with them or, at least keep their name. Either way they made a mess of it, even though Fifa rocks and totally destroyed PESin popularity. this means that EA can be ok if they focus on making great games instead of playing World domination !
