EA Announces $5/Month Xbox One Subscription Program; Gives You Unlimited Access to Games [UPDATE]

New program gives you unlimited access to Battlefield 4, FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, and Peggle 2; more games to be added in the future.

This story has been updated with additional details about the service.

  • The first game available in an early trial version will be Madden 15 sometime ahead of its August launch.
  • The program does not change EA's current plans for demo/beta access to games. An EA representative says, "Traditional demos and betas will still exist."
  • Digital content (such as DLC and maps) will be sold separately, but at a 10% discount. An EA represnentative clarified, "Once you purchase any DLC, it is yours to own, even if your membership lapses. All of your progression is retained."
  • Games will be downloaded, not streamed. Your game progress is also saved by the system, so the EA representative says, "Even if you lapse as a member, and then decide to come back, you'd be able to pick up where you left off."

The original story appears below:

Electronic Arts today announced a new subscription program for Xbox One called "EA Access." For $5/month (or $30/year), you get endless access to The Vault, a collection of digital EA games.

EA Access is available today in beta for some users, with a wider launch planned to arrive "soon." The current games included in The Vault are FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, Peggle 2, and Battlefield 4. More titles will be added "soon," EA says, pointing out that you're getting access to more than $100 worth of games for $5/month.

According to EA, you will have "unlimited" access to the four games during the beta. It is unclear if the same "unlimited" nature of the service will apply when the service rolls out in full later on.

"At EA, we are always looking for new ways to make it easier for gamers to play more EA games across all platforms, and we are excited about what EA Access will offer to players on Xbox One," EA said in a statement on its website.

In addition to access to multiple games in The Vault, an EA Access subscription gets you 10% off on purchases of EA digital content for Xbox One games through the Xbox Games Store. This includes full games and memberships like Battlefield 4 Premium. However, EA cautions that, conditions, limitations, and exclusions apply.

Another component of EA Access is that with a subscription, you'll get to play trial versions of new EA titles "up to" five days before their official release date. This begins with upcoming sports games like Madden NFL 15, NHL 15, FIFA 15, and NBA Live 15, as well as Dragon Age: Inquisition.

If you decide to upgrade to the full version of a game, your progress will carry forward, allowing you to pick up right where you left off. EA Access subscriptions will also be sold in physical stores, including GameStop, as well as online retailers like Amazon.

It remains to be seen what kind of fine print there may be for EA Access. You can read more about EA Access as the program's just-launched website.

This is great! I for one get tired of games quickly. So 30 bucks a year is a steal! I will be getting this once it is available. Think about it every year a new EA comes out. You would most likely not play the old version of a game. So how could you go wrong with this? Im sure the game Library will be worth it as well. Good job EA. I see a lot of other companies following there lead to do this. Well until you can flash the xbox one and play copied games.

This'll be worth it when the Xbox One's library is bigger. I already own 3 of the 4 games going into The Vault, so I'll wait and see how quickly titles get added before signing up to anything.

This would've made more sense to come out on the Xbox 360 since it's library for EA titles, is huge.

Remember this is the same Company that has the exclusive rights to the NFL. Remember NFL2K for $19.00 compared to Madden for $60.00? They killed that real quick. NFL2K played WAY better at way less the cost.

this is a very insidious process. its like when the government takes away peoples rights one small step at a time  when governments do it they can take way longer as they are immortal and people are not but technology moves way faster. so MS showed their hand and got bit sony was on board with this too, but were in such bad financial shape they couldn't afford the bad PR.

now i liked going  to blockbuster and renting movies and the one i went to was making money but it still got canned like all the rest. netflicks was around at the same time as blockbuster, and as i said, some were still making money but that did matter, then netflicks skyrockets not because it was a major success but because there was no were left to go  . if this is even marginally successful, a push for it to become the norm will ensue like i said insidious.

now it all comes back to when MS said and still says, "the gamers  just didn't understand the message" if you can't see that this is the next small step into them getting what they originally wanted to do back in action you need to stop and really look at it and think back to all the policies that got scraped and think about how this is the first step into getting more people always online getting used games killed and by the time we see what has happened we won't be able to do anything about it.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me

I am all for this if is offers a great value/alternative route to accessing EA games for a duration.  $30/year for Peggle 2, Battlefield 4, and Fifa/Madden seem reasonable, but not quite the overwhelmingly compelling option.  Can't argue with choice though, having another way to access games is always welcome.

$5.00 now and sure to have the price hiked down the road once they hook enough people.

2000 comments on an Eddie Makuch article?

Haven't you people learned not to feed trоlls?

hope4redemption

I read some of these comments that sounds as if some of you believe that you get upcoming games for free. All I can see are games released about 9-10 months ago. I see "early access" TRIAL versions, with the ability to retain your work if you buy the full-version. I see a discount for DLC. I don't know how paying a premium over and above your XBL subscription to play old games is really that wonderful of a thing. And a five day head start on new releases: How much of a head start is that really going to be?

The vaulted games are not that attractive, when the turd of BF4 is listed as one of the vaulted games right now. Really, why is getting something that you most likely already have some great benefit? I think some of you believe that you'll be getting full access to upcoming games for the subscription price. That is not what I read at all. As someone said, if you don't want to use it, don't spend your money there. No doubt. But don't expect your money back when you don't get anything worthwhile either.

And one could stand outside a Gamestop and pay $5 for used games. It's about the same as one would get from Gamestop. Plus, it isn't just $5, it is $5 every month. I imagine that if your subscription lapses, it is coded that it won't play until you pay again. It alludes to the fact  that you can't play if you don't maintain the subscription in that if you drop your subscription and you come back, you can pick up where you left off.

Sony is correct, there is no real value of this to their consumers.

Also, Gamespot: third bullet point down on updates to the article - "represnentative". Can I get a job as an editor?

I got an invite last night as an xbox one beta update member, paid $5 CAD. I already own fifa but now don't have to use the disc, battlefield is a steal, madden is alright, and peggle could be a time waster

Once new games come along, 30$ for a year doesn't seem so bad, even when these games do drop down to bargain bin prices. Super excited to try NHL 15 5 days early as well. I guess to each their own, its not like I could walk into a gamestop (ebgames) pay $5 and get 3 copies of a game.

As much hate as there is on EA, I love their sports titles, and having a friend come over, that expierence hasn't changed since the snes/genesis days. Still have a copy of the original fifa sitting in my closet. Def a love/hate relationship with EA

This is good give it thought. With the games already there worth more than the 30. Ea wont start making money of it for a while. Your crazy not to try it for a year or 2.

You guys all upset and whining is ridiculous. If you don't like the service then don't use it. I was a Season Ticket subscriber and was happy paying $23 or whatever it was just to get the early access to NHL, Madden, and Fifa. Now I get the ability to play other games via a vault? Sounds good to me. If you plan on buying Fifa, Madden and NHL as I usually do. Then guess what, 10% off each game is roughly $6 that's $18 savings right there, Add in 2 more games and you've got your subscription cost covered. If you don't like it then don't subscribe, but whining about it is not going to change anything nor is it going to deter people who actually want these benefits. Getting NHL 15 5 days earlier is well worth the price of admission to me.

Sony PS+ on PS4 sucks.  EA has better value.

@voljin1987 That and they know they won't make any real money on it in the first year. EA will need at least a million or more subscribers to really make it viable. Most likely they will keep the number of games on the server either very low or very OLD. In that I mean, they will put a lot of older games on it from 2-3 years back. I don't expect any 2015 type games (Madden 15, NHL 15, Battlefield Hardlines, Mirror's Edge 2, etc. to be on this service anytime soon.

catalyst4518

@Tripwolf Thats the idea! They have TOTAL control of the market. What sells what doesn't. Whats available and at what price. Like in Communist Russia.

blackace
blackace

@Tripwolf It'll go from $5 to $15 a month after the first 3 months. That's the limitations and conditions they are talking about. lol!!

blackace

@Jestersmiles It's not streaming. You actually download the digital games. PSNow is streaming. At $30 a year, that's a steal really. Imagine EA having 50+ games on here. For $30 a year you can download any game and play it to the end. They did say there would be some limitation and condition though, so I'm real curious as to what those are. Don't sign up for this until you've read all the cons, as I'm sure there are many.

@thegamer00  the Ps4 has barely any games you t r o l l. So of course it going to s u c k compared the EA library of old games and even then it's better than Xbox gold with game or w/e the hell it's called.

@thegamer00 As much as I dislike the PS4 because Sony refuses to get the lead out for adding new features, it's unfair to say PS+ sucks on  PS4 because they don't have any AAA they can give away yet. The console is still under a year old while the ps3 and xbox 360 are many years old and have the older AAA games to give out.
