E3 2009: Microsoft briefing set for June 1

Xbox 360 and PC giant to reveal its latest gaming wares the day before this year's revamped expo starts; will likely be last console maker to present.

Even though it's still more than three months away, the Electronic Entertainment Expo is already stirring up plenty of interest. After the poor reception of the last two years' events, Entertainment Software Association organizers promised that the 2009 confab would be bigger and bolder, though they have stopped short of saying that it would return to the massive spectacle of E3 2006.

Although the past week saw one major publisher--Blizzard Entertainment--announce its intent not to attend, E3 2009 saw the first of the "Big Three" console makers lock down its press event. This morning, Microsoft announced that it would hold its pre-E3 briefing at 10:30 a.m. on June 1, the day before the event officially kicks off.

The announcement means that the software giant will likely be the third platform holder to present. At past E3s, two of the three events were held the morning before the expo opened its doors, with Nintendo traditionally taking an early morning slot. The other console maker's event is typically held the day prior to that of its two rivals.

Though it has not divulged any details about its press briefing this year--including its location--Microsoft used its E3 2008 presentation to make a series of major announcements. Besides unveiling its now million-user-strong Netflix video-streaming service for the Xbox 360, the company also revealed three PC/360-exclusive expansions for the popular role-playing game Fallout 3. Last but not least, Microsoft stunned many Sony fans by revealing that the formerly PlayStation 3-only RPG Final Fantasy XIII would be released simultaneously on the 360.

I hope microsoft reveals something about forza 3...I think thats gonna be one of the main big hitters(or anticipated) , and its also one of the main reasons why i still have my 360

i really like how MS suspends a sense of anticipation, by not laying all its cars out on the table all at once, like other companies. these days, you never know what there gonna do. :D

The old E3 format was the big hitter. This new and improved show doesnt catch enough attention. Plz bring back the old school show. I hope MS has something really good hidden under the cuff. lol, we will see.

I like that Microsoft has been aggressive for exclusives with regard to the Western developers, I think exclusive DLC and timed exclusives has helped them a lot, but with regards to Japanese developers it has become quite a problem over time, at first it was good, but with time when Japanese developers made games exclusive for the X360 they don't take it too seriously, I think the whole line-up of X360 RPGs has been characteristic of this, with exception to Namco's RPGs, and I did think games like DOA4, Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Project Sylpheed, and Ninja Gaiden II really showed a capacity of the devs to do well, though I thought the X360 Katamari was so half ass by Namco that it really showed, and then Capcom, instead of continuing its exclusive deal, sat on the IP to develop it for the Wii, same with Lost Planet for the PS3, but that's understandable because being exclusive to the X360 there was no way for this to fair well in the Japanese market, where it should have a chance... and I'm actually relieved 'cause now they're going to make these games multiplatform, which is good, because if companies like Capcom had to waste time remaking these games when timed exclusivity runs out then it's just going to slow down development of new games, now that they're not going that route anymore I think they're going to start cranking these games out faster, at least I hope then again, Microsoft's banking on the XBL store has hurt them since they haven't given publishers much freedom to release any free content on XBL, I think this is a big problem, it's one thing to have exclusive content, I think that by itself is enough to make a good number of people consider buying games like GTA IV or Fallout 3 for the X360 if the content will be exclusive and remain so, but they have to match PSN with regards to the kinds of free content they offer, Microsoft is willing to pay these companies millions to make exclusive content, I'm sure hosting free content isn't going to hurt them much

I'm not holding high hopes for E3 2009, considering the past couple of events have been quite boring. They should never have let the old format go.

I'm really interested to see if MS comes out with some NEW 1st party IP's(besides Alan Wake) Most of their heavy-hitters came out last year. I'm really hoping. "Blending the art form of "mime" with various art forms of dance?" It's brilliant. It's JABBAWOCKEEZ!

I guess they'd announce more games...like Mass Effect 2 and maybe more exclusive game content. FF13 going onto the 360 was a blow to Sony's groin...SE may need to make money to keep afloat, but I think Sony still getting FFVersus 13 as an exclusive still is still an edge for them.

Rummy500 Posted Feb 19, 2009 3:34 pm GMT @TheoleDominion @tidyspidey @Pilch Yep, I remember my Dreamcast very fondly - Crazy Taxi, Shenmue, and the sublime Metropolis Street Racer (Now known to 360 owners as Project Gotham) I grew up as a Mega Drive fanboy and didn't open my eyes until the PS1 came out.

@TheoleDominion @tidyspidey @Pilch Amen to all you guys. The bickering gets old huh? I've had all consoles to this day sept the dreamcast. Couldn't find one. Quit your whining realize its all about the games and not the box you put 'em in. Grow up and be a gamer. P.S. WE WANT Alan Wake E3! and Assassins Creed 2, Mass Effect 2, World in Conflict for consoles man! And anything else I forgot... I w@NT !T !

I hope this year they focus more on what gamers want to see and less on how they plan to capture the 'casual' market. to much time was wasted talking about Mii's, oops I mean avatars, and the reskinning (which I still don't like much). I also think MS needs to do a little more to keep people from going PS3 though... maybe price cut time for some XBLA titles or a yearly gold account?

Kudos to "Tidyspidey" and "Pitch R ed", I was a diehard Nintendo fanboy from NES to N64 til a friend mine convince me try Final Vll and MGS on the PS1. I was "shellshocked" WHAT?! There are great games I can enjoy that exist on more than 1 system? Needless to say, the maturity process was PAINFUL. I'm happier because of it now, the experience has made me a TRUE gamer. I've practically owned every system since, including the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast. I play the x360,PS3, and the Wii, in which has made me a better well rounded gamer. It's a shame FANBOYZ are depriving or limiting their gaming experience they could be otherwise enjoying. But like you said sooner or later you'll have to grow up, it's gonna hurt too..lol

Man I hope this year isn't as pathetic as the others. Lord knows it'd take a special kind of terrible to top last year. Nintendo needing a post-event show to apologize for who awkward it was.

Bioshock went on ps3 later on and now FF 13 is going on xbox 360...............

10679
10679

yoko81 but the xbox360 is about at least 8million units ahead of ps3 or more and i know for a fact that the gap between xbox 360 and ps3 is getting bigger because ps3 is selling less units. also recent sales as shown that ps3 solld 25% less units of lsat year sales figure of the same month. xshadow_raiderx if ps3 is better than xbox360 in every other way why isn't it ahead of 360. don't use the excuse of xbox360 having a year advantage because the wii didn't have it (ie released the same as ps3) and they ahead of 360 by a large margin and why most multiplatform games look better on xbox360 than they do on ps3. example lost planet, fallout 3 and many more.

I can't say I'm terribly excited about E3 this year. The last two years' shows have been terrible, and a few of the conferences only marginally interesting. If there's another poor performance this year, then E3 will be well and truly dead to me. Prove me wrong.

@Pilch R eD - yup, that's about right. Love the analogy of a "cake you wouldn't pay to eat" lol..... Although a lot of the console bile spat on here is just drivel, I actually find a lot of it funny these days.... almost all of the fanboys will realise they're idiots when they get a bit of maturity about them.... I was a Sega fanboy until I played on my cousins SNES and realised I was missing out on some more amazing games. I've been a multi-console hoarder ever since :) On topic - I hope we have some announcement about a Netflix equivalent service in the UK for the 360.... we have online DVD rentals from the likes of Blockbuster, Lovefilm etc, so they really should look at offering it to the UK soon by now.

Pilch_R_eD

YAY! Wishes, hopes and dreams, with a generous spinkling of system hate mongering. This comment's board is a cake I certainly wouldn't pay to eat. Good for the people looking forward to things, but down with the shallow minded pre-pubescent system drones. Shockingly, and lovably, nintendo has never sparked any hatred against anyone. Sony fans are pissed fairly rightfully at microsofts bad sportsmanship. Busting into the now biggest entertainment industry and throwing down piles of cash to crush everyone. And congratulations 360 fans. Console gamers have finally been given a PC like gaming experiance and exploded for it. PS3 is the best console, because the 360 isn't a console. Nintendo is the best games system, for remembering it's a games system, and the 360 is the best hardware system, by being a miniature PC. And it's major library of games isnt an earned priviledge, but a bought one. It's *NOT* about the systems. It's about the games. You don't own a 360 or a PS3 or a WII or a PC because you want a goofy box owned by a massive electronics corporation. You own it because it plays GAMES!!! Stop being so hating towards eachother and start realising that the big producers and publishers are just playing you against eachother. The systems allow each gamer to have something that caters more towards their style. Doesn't change the fact we're all gamers. Microsoft wants you to hate sony because they don't want you to buy sony. It has nothing to do with quality. And whats sad is so many of you have fallen under their spell of subliminal hatred just as they wanted you to. There is nothing wrong with defending something you love. There *IS* however something wrong with having to defend that something you love because someone is bashing everything else that isnt the thing that THEY love. Lets all grow up and be friends now. Yes? That'd be good......
