E3 06: Sony's booth holds PS3 surprises

Massive exhibit sports dozens of playable kiosks for Sony's next-gen console, including a demo for previously unannounced titles Wardevil: Enigma and something new from the creators of Indigo Prophecy.

LOS ANGELES--Gamers have been waiting a long time for some interaction with Sony's PlayStation 3. Up until this morning, most looks at the PlayStation 3 have been hands off, with gamers attempting to get a bead on the system's capabilities based on hype and scraps from trailers. Today, however, all that changed.

As many had hoped, PS3 games were playable in force on the floor of the show. Two giant video screens showing video versions of Sony's recent "Play Beyond" ad campaign welcome visitors to the booth. Sony's booth workers passed out PS3-branded lanyards to attendees as they were funneled into the heart of Sony's booth and the much-hoped for playable versions of PS3 games.

The crowd quickly grew thick around each embankment of PS3 games, with two monitors and playable demos on either side of a glass case housing a number of PS3 development kits. But those waiting for their turn at the system's motion-sensitive controller had their attention drawn to a mammoth screen showing a Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer as much as to the games they were about to play.

As for which games those were, the lineup consisted of a number of first- and third-party titles. Incognito's long-awaited sequel to Warhawk (called simply Warhawk) drew plenty of attention on its eight kiosks, as did the title formerly known as I-8, Resistance: Fall of Man. Heavenly Blade, Formula One 06, Namco Bandai's Gundam, Madden 07, Sonic the Hedgehog, Virtua Tennis 3, and Genji 2.

There were also a couple of unexpected playable demos on the booth's elevated walkway. One was for WarDevil: Enigma, which appears to be the same game as the Xbox 360 WarDevil. The other was for a demo called Heavy Rain: The Casting from Quantic Dream, makers of last year's acclaimed adventure title Indigo Prophecy. Though initial reports pegged Heavy Rain as a prequel to Indigo Prophecy, it is unclear if is a full-fledged game or merely an intricate tech demo.

While the walkway was completely open when the show started, Sony has since set up a line for it not unlike the one across the aisle at Nintendo's booth, complete with signs advising people of how long it would take to get up there. A number of other PS3 titles including Eye of Judgment and Singstar were on display in windowed enclosures along the edge of the PS3 section.

While the focus was on the PS3, Sony turned heads with its PlayStation 2 and PSP lineups as well. The PSP area featured a number of approximations of everyday locations, including a setup of first-class airplane seats, a park bench, a bsketball court, and a subway car. There was also a content download station, and a playable version of the system's PSone emulator featuring Ridge Racer.

The PS2 may be getting long in the tooth, but Sony's convinced there's life in the machine yet, and the array of PS2 games lining the outskirts of the company's booth is one argument why. Guitar Hero II, God of War II, and Final Fantasy: Dirge of Cerberus drew particularly close attention from show-goers, but Yakuza, Final Fantasy XII, and a number of other PS2 games rounded out the system's current-gen offerings.

Check back soon for GameSpot's impressions of games straight from the show floor.

I think the Sony is going to be the main hype at E3 2007 and with its new games announced I think it has finally crawed out of the dark. You can't forget Killzone should be playable by then so I got to see that in action.

Very informative. That was a nice review. Sony and the PS3 is the best idea. I think NINTENDO always has something missing...

I like sony, dont get me wrong, but i mean those screens for Gran Turismo (HD) are kinda stupid then what could be done. They have a powerful machine, The xbox360 could produce better graphics with their system, then so can sony.

This has probabaly already been said a large number of times but nevertheless, at a cost of around £500 for the ps3 and just one game I fail to see how so many people can say that the ps3 is cheap Take into consideration that in order to get the best out of the graphics and to make it look better than the other consoles your gonna need a decent new television and by the time youv'e bought one of them that £500 will have turned into about £2000 or possibly much much more which is an awful lot of money for people who live in the real world and pay for their own way in life especially if you consider that only about 1 in 10 people can now afford to get themselves a mortgage here in the uk before they reach 30 years old but then who cares eh, I for one am the worlds biggest gamer and I am stupid enough to spend enough of my money that I wont ever own a house of my own lol

I think this madden should have nfl live. You know like the show on espn and after all the games are over for that week there should be a t.v. where you can watch espn. and see all the games . And it should have ( Chris Berman, Michael Irvin, Jaws, and the rest of the crew), to tell you who the think the best team is and the wrost team is. And who is the best player and the wrost player. Mel Kiper Jr. should be on the game. I been wanted this for a long time since the 05 game came out. So ea sports will you please think about it and consider putting something like this in the 08 madden game.

I am curious as to why no reports were made of the blueray playback quality of the PS3? Right now we are all seeing gameplay and in some cases, (GTHD) tech demos. I can tell you that GTHD is strictly a noninteractive demo which when the final game comes out will not be HD as in 1080p. You have to figure Sony will need to dumb it down to a playable form. People dont seem to realize that without computer AI and interaction the animation on the screen can be tuned to run at any rate and resolution. It is when you start throwing in those elements that framerate will stutter because of the unpredictability of the AI. As far as I know, the visual quality of HDDVD and blueray are the same with the exception of 1080p vs 1080i. Movies I can see running in p but games will not because of the random interaction with the onscreen image. Sony will most likely run things at 720p like MS. The whole 480/720/1080 thing is the same as resolutions of a pc monitor. The higher the res the slower things become unless you have the power to maintain a solid rate. Since the PS3 uses the same (or similar) chip as a 7800/7900 then it will have to do upscaling from a lower res to a higher res instead of rendering it in a naitve 1080. I have seen the effects of taking a 480p and upscale it to 720p or 1080i. You get the impression of a higher res image at the saving of bandwidth because of not having to actually render at that res. Given that games are generally made on pc hardware and then coded for the console would lead you to believe that they will do just that. Developement kits are pc's with either emulated or actual console parts rather than actually jacking into a 360 or PS3 with a mouse and keyboard. Bottom line is a console game could never truly outdo a pc because it takes the pc to make that console game.

I can name a few "inferior" spec systems who out witted the superior design of its competitor. the 2600 beat Colecovision. NES beat SMS. Genesis beat the SNES. Playstation beat the N64. And the obvious PS2 beating the Xbox. It doesn't matter how powerful a system is unless you can really take advantage of it. The 360 is inferior to the PS3 but I have a feeling it will win. What makes me mad is the PS3 specs are radically different between its "core" and "premium" versions. At least for the 360 it was just a matter of accessories that could take a core to a premium level. You can't do that with the core PS3. It will lack actual hardware to make it a premium version in a stripped down shell. The hard drive difference is moot as the drives are removable. I am talking about the built in wifi, hdmi, media card reader all part of the premium PS3. You aint going to be able to buy those things as extras for the core PS3. As I said, the core 360 is a premium with a few extras removed but you can get them and make it into a premium. PS3 is hardware restricted to each design. At least a car can have options. the PS3 doesn't.

^ agreed...all thes complainers are just a facet of cheapness... they want the best things to be cheap...nothing cheap foldk live with it.. All this bashing on sony won;t change anything.. If you can'ty afford it then don't buy one..its a great price even for $659 CDN for the 60GB is decent, consider the plyaers relased here "samsung" is over $1000 player itself... Think about this, would rather have sony sell there system at $900U.S as insisited very early before E3..this was the price for sony..as rumored need per console in order to cover there cost...be greatful for sony selling it at $600... Bunch of stubburn and cheap people, always want to have good stuff cheap...people liekt gat won't get anywhere in life....bloody cheap ASs people.

Morning/Afternoon/Evening, :) I'd like to add my comments, on what I have seen at E3 through the likes of IGN/Magicbox/Gamespot/C&VG. Firstly, not wanting to sound like a complete t*sser by writing this here in a PS3 column, but I felt Microsoft had the best press conference overall. Showing Gears of War off at the start, was a class A act. I don't care what anyone says, that game not only looks stunning, but appears to play with absolute ease. Naturally I would have to leave the second part of that statement to hands on judgement, but that game seriously left me thinking WOW. I have yet to pick up any next generation system. Decided to wait my time out on this one, for the first time in my life I might add. As you get older, it seems more important things start to come into your life, rather than the latest console, though that is still a big past time for me!!! :) Xbox 360's Oblivion was a key turning point, the first round up of titles looked a pretty standard affair, especially the likes of Tony Hawks, with only really PGR3 looking next gen. COD2 did look great, but not really that graphically evolved over its prequel. So, for Microsoft I've waited to see what this E3 showed off before making that financial decision. I admit, I havnt paid hardly any attention to Wii (why they called it that, I will never know), but as far as I am concerned, what ever happened at the end of the Super Nintendo's life, and the creation of the N64, went pretty bad for the big N. Its a shame, as I still regard the SNES as THE best console in my life time. However, it seems to have gone pear shaped since then for Nin. Sony offered nothing new, they showed the same trailers (only shorter versions), Warhawk, which looks.....well not as good as they showed last E3. OK its far from finished, I will give them that, but its not really what I classify as next gen (at this moment in time). I feel Sony have slammed out some serious specs, and now developers are pushed to produce some fantastic looking title that pushes what we are seeing from competitors. I am begining to see the PS2 all over again, with so much hype on the Emotion Engine, they actually forgot to include a half decent game at launch, with only SSX actually making me think, my DC was better. MGS4 does look the muts nuts, but whilst the graphics are real time rendered, whats the game like? With only 6 months before launch, either Sony are playing a huge gamble by not showing off some real time in game footage on there first line up of titles, or they are simply not at that stage. If they are not much further from last E3 as in terms of physical play, its a worry as to what will be the line up for launch. We all know EA will have some form of sport title out, we all know that RR7 will be there (which again has not impressed at all from footage I have seen), but what about the rest? I hope motorstorm is a blinder, it looks lush, but the developers have set a huge marker to reach after the trailer they showed, promising in game visuals, which I believe the are now finding very difficult to match. I firmly feel its not tech demos the crowd should be lured by, but actual in game footage. For me, Too Human, Mass Effect, Gears of War are showing real time in game sequences, and they have caught my attention. To sum up, Sony dropped a bombshell with a cut down PS3 (why do it?) you instantly create a divide, and not really show anything new, the worlds largest gaming event. Nintendo are going out of the equation unless they turn up the heat, and start to remember that games are just about fat plumbers. Microsoft at least have a strategy, a start, and more importantly some serious titles to get under way. More importantly, they have some new titles, that are not sequels to one title or another. Bungie themselves showed some nice footage of H3, and at least admitted that this would be the last title of the series, a brave move (one which I will be amazed they keep to be fair) but at least know that doing something over and over will kill the appeal. PS3, sure I will buy one, I am a tech fiend after all, but at present, I am not pre-ordering until I see something that seriously makes me realise that this cell chip can do something more, than just sound fun. X360, picking one up in the next few weeks. Thanks for listening. Take it easy all.

Everyone's jumping on Sony for the price. Yeah it's expensive, but does anyone realize that the graphis card in the PS3 is more powerful than the best Nvdia has for the PC. Go check out the price for the 7900GTX on Newegg. It ranges from 480 to 550 dollars. As for the games, we go through this every console cycle. Of couse the 360 is going to look as good and some a little better. The developers have had almost 2 years or to work with system. Every system has an identity or style of games you like to play. Sony gernerally has more exsclusive games I like. If you can afford to get all then get all. if not, then pick the one who's going to have your style of games. For me, its Sony all the way

I do have to say that the add on hd-dvd drive was a big mistake for the 360, especially if its not game compatible. I am getting so old now ( 25 ) that I'm the only one here who remebers how much of a pain in the butt Sega Cd was. I see no real reason to buy the add on just to watch movies on hd-dvd that will be better in blue ray format anyway. Eventually microsoft will screw all the early adopters of the 360 by putting a hd-dvd drive directly in the box, and have it support games, because developers and publishers don't want to have every game in 3 years consist of 4 dvds. So bassically what I'm saying is, Who wants to carry around all that extra crap?

Holy hell the ps3 looks so freaking big and god i like how they kept the old remote style the newere ones looked to big to me and looked like when they dropped they break but 600 dollars is a stupid price when i could get a computer for that supe it up and beat it xbox360 looks like it has the same graphics as the ps3 and the ps3 may be better but how its like the same thing has the ps2 and xbox xbox beat it they both look the same on graphics and gameplay

Well technology isn't always more expensive look at computers. They are always getting better, but they get cheaper. We do have a reason to complain. We aren't all adults here. We don't have jobs. Most of us haven't even grown mustaches like Mario(I have.) PS3 does look good, but for that price, no. I picked XBox 360 over the PS3 despite PS3's superior graphics. I like the 360's features.

Wii won't own PS3....Wii is a grwat system in its way but the reaosn its cheap..casue it has **** technology insdie and none the less, it only good for multiplayer games such as mario party and other..othert than that there other games can't par with what PS3 has in terms of games and the amount of technology there is.. None the less, you guys are tooo easily pleased with conferences...make good judgement when the rest of the 2- WIII and PS3 comes then talk...for now.. Also, all this complaining about how its to expensive..you guys are cheap thats why..knowing how technology grows and build up in quliry there is always an expense to it. its not like you can buy a Plasma t.V for $20 and saying 2k is to expensive, it has a reason. Final saying...if you can't afford it then don't buy one..simple...leave all your whining to sony...and maybe they will help you with the finacial problems..(yeah right..).
