DSiWare turns 1

Nintendo Store Update: Handheld's online channel celebrates first birthday with Mr. Driller, Game & Watch; Fishie Fishie, Ironclad hit Wii.

One year ago this week, Nintendo launched the DSi in North America. Along with the camera-equipped redesign for Nintendo's popular portable, the publisher rolled out the DSiWare service, which lets owners of the handheld take advantage of the system's newly introduced SD card storage by downloading games and other content. Nintendo has since released more than 150 programs through DSiWare, adding four more as part of its Monday update this week.

Namco Bandai's Mr. Driller: Drill Till You Drop leads this week's quartet of new additions to DSiWare. The 500 DSi-point ($5) title includes more than 40 stages in which players descend down a vertical shaft by drilling through colored blocks to achieve a high score.

Mr. Driller digs the DSi.

The remainder of this week's DSiWare lineup falls under Nintendo's Game & Watch label and costs 200 DSi points ($2) a piece. Manhole is a fast-paced puzzler in which gamers take the role of a construction worker and attempt to prevent pedestrians from falling through openings. In Helmet, gamers attempt to move from one building to another while avoiding debris falling from the sky. Lastly, Vermin plays out like the classic Whack-a-Mole arcade game.

As for WiiWare, DK Games brings Fishie Fishie to Nintendo's console this week for 500 Wii points ($5). Accommodating play for up to four, Fishie Fishie is a reflex-based competitive game that presents more than 100 levels in which gamers engage in such modes as Soccer, Capture the Star, and Survival. Lexis Numerique has released its child-development tool Learning with the PooYoos: Episode 2 for 500 Wii points ($5).

On the Virtual Console, D4 Enterprise has on tap Ironclad for 1,000 Wii points ($10). The side-scrolling shoot-'em-up was originally developed by Saurus for the NeoGeo and saw its first run in 1996.

horaay for a service I stopped using when I ditched the DSi for my old DS lite a week ago,,,if the system were to charge individual games in real currency, rather than buy points in bulk which force you to buy more later on you can use any dregs you have remaining (aka what the psn does), I might still be using the service...

And people jumped in ecstasy for the anniversary of a service that most DSi owner doesn't even know existed. :P

Oh I felt as the DSi came out last week. That year went fast.

not only crapy games anymore. There are lot of good games now and the only thing you have to do is to read a reviews or watch videos before purchasing. i think that dsiware started really badly and it affected a lot of people who are even now thinking that dsiware is bad. Its because they dont even give it a try anymore because they are dissapointed of the earlier games. I believe that games like Starship patrol, Pop island, intersect, reflect missiles and more would change your current point of view.

The DSi was a huge mistake in the first place considering they already announced the next hardware not to mention the DSi XL.

And finally I use gb micro and ds fat to play gba cartridges with normal gba slot, not that short stupid one in ds lite. It's interesting will they ever sell gba games in dsware for 3ds like they do it in virtual console for n64 and snes games for wii?

Doesn't feel like it has been around that long for some reason.

I've got dsi only 1 mounth ago and FlipNote Studio is whole new world for me. Mp3 player with cool visuals and sound effects, opera browser without flash and minimalistic mate plastic make with version 100 per cent better than ds lite. And Aura-Aura Climber for only $2 is my favorite game of the week.

I haven't really seen even one DSiWare game I would want. I love my DS Lite though. Why are there two cameras on the DSi again? I never really hear much about any games making good use of them. They should put the money spent on those back into GBA compatibility and take the cameras out. I also agree that the DSi would be much better suited for a virtual console type system than what it is being used for now. I would be interested if they did that. Until then I will pass.

A great run, although it still doesn't match WiiWare's library.

wth, its been a year already? wow, i could have sworn it was only a few months ago this thing came out lol ah well, if the ipad was the same price as the dsi, i would go for the dsi hands down every time.

I like it for the Brain Ages and puzzle games. The rest I don't care for, but I imagine most of them are bad anyway. Happy Birthday.

I've had a DSi for a while now and still haven't bought any DSiWare titles, because none of them look like they are worth buying. To this point DSiWare has disappointed me, but maybe in the future they'll come up with something.

I got the DSi at midnight launch last year. I strted off with the Warioware DSiWare game, and it super sucked. Flip note studio was nice. Then i got Dragon Quest Wars, and that was a pretty big let down too. So much for DSiWare so far. The screen is nice. Much nicer than the screen on my original DS it replced. But other than that, whats been the point? Where are the games they said would be using the new features? I love my DSi, don't get me wrong, just somthing to work out as they should.

Wow, a year goes by fast. I'm happy with my DS lite. I wanted a DSi but with the 3DS coming soon, I'll wait. Happy B-day, DSi!

Apparently people do want it, or they wouldn't make it anymore.

Vermin sounds okay, but $2 for a Game & Watch game is steep. You can buy an NES game like Super Mario Bros. for $5, that's 2.5 times the price of a black & white game with little beeps for music. Why not actual Gameboy games? I'd pay $5 each for some of those, and $8 for one or two (But only ones like SMBD, though I know that's a Gameboy Color title).
