Dragon Age II: Exalted March expansion canceled

BioWare says it has moved entire team's focus to the future of the franchise, hints at reexamining studio's previous games for inspiration going forward.

BioWare has stopped work on a Dragon Age II expansion in favor of the next step in the franchise's future.

Put a fork in it. Dragon Age II is done.

In a post on Twitter, series executive producer Mark Darrah said that an expansion to Dragon Age II known as Exalted March was canceled in favor of "other Dragon Age opportunities."

The developer also released a full statement on the studio's official forums, saying the entire team is now focused on the next project in the franchise. While Darrah didn't give specifics, he did tease where the team was taking its inspiration from, saying, "This past year, we've spent a lot of time both going back to the 'BioWare vault' of games and re-examining them, and looking at some new possibilities that today's industry allows." He also emphasized that the studio wants to hear from its fans as to where they would like to see the franchise go next.

Though Darrah and BioWare didn't specify Dragon Age III in its forum post, the company was openly hiring for that game last year.

Dragon Age II launched in March of 2011 to mostly positive reviews, although critics were split on a number of the game's changes. For example, instead of crafting a new character from scratch, Dragon Age II players were given a set protagonist named Hawke and allowed to pick only a gender and a class.

I disagree, I found the DLC to be the best part of DA2. They were more interesting and more memorable than the entire original game. This latest DLC would have made my DA2 experience grow just that much more. As far as I can tell the story was the only true flaw of the game and unfortunately thats kinda a big deal but the DLC's helped improve things. The graphics were okay but anything can be enhanced with a mod, not a real big deal. The limited areas you have to see over and over for the entire game killed me which again was what the DLC's helped with allot. But the way Varric is telling the story and those cinematic I liked that, combat was awesome, never was a big fan of spending my entire game in the "action" portion going : 1234, 1234, 1234 meh. Overall was DA2 a failure? Yes. Was it a horrible game? No! It simply didn't live up the the expectations it 'should' have brought to the table let alone was we all wanted. However I wont ever say I was miserable playing it. No regrets simply disappointment.

don't understand why ppl would prefer the second one. Origins was so great, races , starts different places etc. this were gone in Dragon age 2. Combat was the only enhanced thing everything else sucked. Story and map were so awesome in Origins making it one of the best rpgs in newer times imo

If they want inspiration, look no further than the first game.  The second game was totally forgettable.

I hope this is not the future for DA, going from a full blown epic RPG in the first game to a shitty action RPG in 1 game!!!

This is terrible news. Dragon Age II rocked. Would've liked to see more. Let's just hope the third is more like the second.

Did Bioware finally find out no one would play it even at gunpoint?

I dislike how Brendan portrayed the game as having "mostly positive reviews" and left out the major backlash the game got. Horrible writing.

At this point another expansion on DAII would be money down the tubes, it would be a good move on their part to just move on.

Dear heavenly father. Look past Bioware sins and mistakes. Give them the power and strength to tell EA to shove it, and make good games again. Amen.

All this could have been solved if they just called it Dragon Age: Modern Warfare. Then nobody compain and the REAL Dragon Age II would still be in production ^^

Hopefully they make Dragon Age 3 an RPG like the first one was.

Bioware has me dissapointed of late. I didnt buy Dragon Age 2 or Mass Effect 3 fearing that the franchises would be a poor excuse of their former selves (seems I was mostly right). Last game i bought was The Old Republic and was left unimpressed. Seems like EA's influence is beginning to erode Bioware's reputation as a great developer.

@BuBsay its like telling a Chef to cook BigMacs because more people are going to buy it and its going to be quicker. I dont believe the Chef would take pride in cooking BigMacs

@MInitiative ...lol too smart for EA's target audience ...and you are right! The way things are turning people into video games are going to have similar IQs to peole watching Nascar and playing poker.

Oh and I forgot the fact the characters acted like Ninjas hooked up on energy drinks while in combat. A game having the words DRAGON AGE in its title, having a white male and american-like characters, fighting kung fu style and doing back flips, does not, I REPEAT, does not make sense.

I'm just wondering, out of curiosity, on this lonely night....why the hell would I want a Dragon Age 2 expansion? It's like asking(let's find a really bad game with a 3.0 score.....)DUKE NUKEM FOREVER to come up with an expansion. There are good games out there, there's no need creating expansions for sh!tty games. And YES I did play DA2 believing it would be at least equal to DA, so don't say I'm a hater. DA2 was a dumbed down game for kids that are not able to play RPGs and follow in-game conversation and that are also not able to customise items. The missions were boring,as were the characters, and the linear cities...well the whole shebang was boring. I'm still surprised I got 7$ when I exchanged it for another game.

@Michael83917 I wonder if there is a way to pay the developers directly? I'd be happy to do that. If none... well.. aarrrrrr!!!!

I actually know someone who used to be an EA exec, and though he defends them for it, he admits its exactly as you expect. Their stated policy is to buy up studios and franchises and then churn out as much as they can as fast as they can regardless of quality. Corporations exist solely to make profit for their shareholders, they don't owe fans anything. So long as idiots keep going and buying the stuff they put out, they can and will continue to do this. The games industry needs to find a better model to finance large projects, fast.

Something tells me going through your vault, Bioware is just PR talk and not truly trying to improve. I will give you that ME3 was better than ME2, but lacks the exploration, story, and eerie sidequests of ME1

Good move, BioWare. Considering the backlash you've had over this game, I'd get working on 3, too. Granted, the last time you made a game with 3 in the title didn't end so great, ether.

Dear EA: Please give them more than a year this time.

Hey, BioWare. You want to make DA3 good? Keep the improved combat and perhaps the friendship-rivalry system, and go back to your roots for everything else. Oh. And bring back The Warden, please. Even though it was badly presented, DA2 still had an interesting storyline and was arguably successful in being able to set up an awesome story for DA3, should it continue from DA2's ending.

They waited waaaaaaaaaaaaay too long to go with an expansion. The fire had gone out.

@Dragn_mastr I've played both DA:Origins (best game of the past decade and also these past 4 years imho) and DA2 and also DAO : Awakening (best expansion pack of these past years) . so I know the whole story . I meant the plot of DA2 was barely related to DAO's events .

Dragn_mastr
Dragn_mastr

@20years "Dragon Age" is the time period of which the series takes place. It was given the name "Dragon Age" because a high dragon was sighted during the dawn of the new era.

20years
20years

fun part is the game's name is "Dragon" Age 2 , yet the main plot of the game had nothing to do with any dragon .

20years
20years

main game was not good , definitely the expansion can't right it . so it doesn't matter . the only part we'll loose is the story , which can be fixed in "Dragon Age 3" .

I simply don't trust EAWare to make another solid DA game. DA2 proved flat out to me that they were willing to ruin an IP for a cash grab, and ME3's monumentally bad ending (as well other lesser but still lazy elements in the game) has done nothing but kill my trust for this company. The sad truth is that we're never going to get a Baldur's Gate style rpg ever again, not on a AAA level at least. For today's presentation standards it's simply too text heavy, too long, too complex, and for lack of a better way to put it, too smart for EA's target audience (it may sound mean, but companies really do think of their target audiences that way). Emphasis on voice acting has led to dialogue being built around it, making for shorter, simpler lines (because more lines = more time = more money spent); you can already see big rpgs like Skyrim suffering from that very symptom. This generation has been a sad one for rpgs.

Good! Now they need to make an Origins:2. That's all any of us wanted, am I right? I was hoping for a Mass Effect style trilogy about the Warden. I also want to know what happens after the Witch Hunt DLC.

Here's my advice, replay Dragon Age Origins and use it as a template going forward. Forget DA2, it never existed.

I hated the reused areas but the worst thing was u couldn't protect your mage using strategy anymore, the waves of enemy that could just come from anywhere was dumb.

what if they make dragon age origins 3... but capture the magic it had in dragon age one... with the amazing lore characters and story.. damn first time playing dragon age origins amazing....

DA2 was not that bad. The re-use of levels is the worst thing they did IMO. Im sure for the next game they will at-least try to disguise this method in the future.

@Nodashi On this, we'll have to disagree. "If the game is good it will sell DLC years from release date." I doubt this is true, at least to a large enough audience to make the DLC worth the investment. We're living in a hobby where games last two weeks and get traded in - not really conducive to the long game. Take DA2, for example. Let's pretend it was a great game and this DLC is greenlit. I'd STILL have no interest in it. I haven't touched the game in a year, I have no idea where I was, who my party members were, or how you play the game to begin with. I've got two new games on tap and my brain and my life have moved on. Thanks for the memories. Day One DLC makes much more sense. If a gamer blows through the game in the first week, it's there for them. If they get it three months after launch, it's there for them. And if the game stinks, well, don't buy the DLC before you play it. Basic common sense. As a thought exercise, imagine an article here announcing that they're making new DLC for, I dunno, a Ratchet and Clank game that came out three years ago. The majority of responses would be "why?" or "LOL." And rightly so.

Really Dragon Age 2 is the only bad game Bioware has made, think of the possibilities if they were to look towards any of their previous masterpieces for inspiration for Dragon Age 3, I mean they've got BG 1, BG 2, Neverwinter Nights, KOTOR, Dragon Age Origins, Mass Effect 1 (since that's the only ME everyone seems to agree is a masterpiece.). No reason to lose faith yet with such a long list of perfect games.

ranbla

I seriously doubt I'll ever buy another Bioware product. I got burned with SWTOR (the game is a steaming pile of... bugs) and refused to buy ME3. As long as EA is in the picture with their money-grubbing, filthy paws, I'll pass.

Nodashi
Nodashi

@Rottenwood Except DA2 was a bad game from day 1, people just had to PLAY it to know. Actually that's one more point against day 1 DLC. People have to decide before they even can test the game and know if they like it. If the game is good it will sell DLC years from release date*. If it's bad, making people decide if they'll spend even more than the initial 60 (wasted) dollars is cowardice. *Unless your business model is to launch an small update calling it a sequel each year like the MW series, ten you're guilty of burying your older games.

@Zero_resistance If anything they need to get inspiration from the second since it's better than Origins in every possible way.

Nah Iv loved all and i mean all of biowares games, To many critics these days. RPG is awsome just wish theyd bring more out. My only hate is DLC, if they are to bring out DLC in my eyes it has to be a further story line end ex :D
