BioWare hiring for Dragon Age III

Studio creative development director Alistair McNally tweets about development of third installment in fantasy series.

There was always speculation that BioWare's Dragon Age series would be a trilogy, as both the 2009 original and its March sequel were critical and commercial hits. So it comes as no surprise that the studio that birthed the series revealed it is staffing up for a third entry.

BioWare is sounding the "staffing" horn for Dragon Age III.

The news stems from a tweet from BioWare's creative development director, Alistair McNally, who used the social forum to announce that the studio is seeking out talent to help create the world of Dragon Age III.

"I'm looking for exceptional environment artists to join me at #BioWare Edmonton, Canada to work on #DragonAge3 #gamejobs #jobs #3D #artists," read the tweet from McNally.

Dragon Age: Origins has shipped more than 3.2 million units globally since debuting in 2009, and its sequel--Dragon Age II--has shipped more than 2 million units since premiering in March.

Origins was awesome! Dragon age II was an almost instant uninstall, the worst peace of crap that ever touched my PC's hard drive. After about an hour of playing I was done with it. Total waste of money!! Only bought it because I thought it would be the follow up to Origins. They could have used the origins engine and just build the next chapter of the story for us and call it Dragon age II, but no.. They screwed us over with this crud. If they release DA III, I'm not one to jump on it. I'd have to see stellar reviews from the Baldurs Gate/Icewind Dale/NeverWinter Nights kind of RPG players, who like me enjoyed Origins but hated DA II.

Hmm...good to see that still they are developing it. I love DA-O. But not DA2 which lacked a heart touching story & some other elements which make the Origins an epic game. I would really love to have characters from Origins. Specially Leliana & Alistair. as playable. Im just hoping for the best...(thats all WE can do)

Mass Effect 3 is out now so there's no escape anymore! By the end of this year or early the next one Dragon Age III MUST be released! You have no choice, BioWare!

I'm hopeful for a beautiful blending of the two games. I'm more excited for Kingdoms of Amalur, but I'm pretty excited for this.

They are going to combine the best from both games: clunky combat and silent protagonist from first with lack of story line and repeating dungeons from the 2nd. No preorder for you, Bioware, until I'm convinced this isn't the case.

Hope they learnt from their mistakes in DA2 and bring back more skills and tactics. I feel as if DA2 was just an expansion, just a small story to set up the epic events of the future (DA3). I mean the 1st one was so epic and they had so much lore, such a huge world that they could have made a much better game, even if they had planned for a trilogy. Just looked at the huge areas they could have chosen for the game: Tevinter, Orlais, Korcari Wilds, etc no, they had to chose just 1 city... of course it'd never be as epic as the first one...

If they made no changes at all, only a new story and characters instead DA2 it would have been MUCH better.

@Rat_King Amen to that brother ... dragon age origins drains life ... and i really hope they make another story about another blight ... they have so much backstory to draw upon ... they could make a game that begins with the first blight then fast forwards to another blight ...

i agree about da2 i really like the game, but it just doesnt feel as aweosme or epic as origins somehow... and they didnt really answer any of the questions left by origins. i really hope they go back to the warden character for 3 would be awwesome to play as the grey warden again

I'm not hating on DA2, but I don't think there is any question it is simply dwarfed by the greatness of DAO. I can only play DA2 for a few hours at most before I'm done, with DAO I was constantly struggling on when I can play so that I can play for hours at a time. If not, I'd still play every minute I could. That is the sign of a good game right there. DA2 is just missing.....something. I can't figure it out. It's DEFINITELY NOT a bad game at all but....damn, it's just not the same. Here's to hoping DA3 goes back to the roots.

also, i better not have to play as a ****ing human again. i find my species boring, which is why i like the fantasy and Sci Fi genres so interesting.

@Angel_Grigorov i hated the changes in DA2, i beat Origins 3 times.

Well it is a hit. It averages 7.9 out of 10. Which is a high score. We are used to Bioware games getting 9.5 out of 10 so haters go wild now complaining about everything. Consider also that only half of the people actually finnished the "beloved" DA Origins

DA2 was a critical and commercial hit? Wow. Apparently you haven't been listening. But that is not surprising coming from GameSpot. I wonder how much GameSpot reviews cost publishers?

@TerraMantis i hadn't heard of drakensang before. i agree and i really don't know why they changed the DA universe/art style/customisation so drastically in the first place. i guess the next one will look like a final fantasy game.

TerraMantis
TerraMantis

@isshiah You realize that you just described the exact scenario for Drakensang: The River of Time? Anyway...hopefully Bioware will get the reasons why people liked Origins so much and bring Dragon Age back to life again while incorporating the few elements that DA2 improved upon. Oh yeah, and hopefully they'll spend more time on it than it takes Hollywood to hastily and poorly release a drab "Saw" movie each year.

Think about people, if Dragon Age 3 is JUST like Origins. Then we'll be calling that game Dragon Age Origins :|. Plus what's with the hate towards DA2. sure it's not fantastic as DAO, that doesn't mean it's a bad game though. I say DA2 had a better combat system than DAO, and the armor system was also better.

Anisoropos
Anisoropos

@issiah absolutely true, and i cant figure the reason, cause it just cant be money...bioware is already pretty damn successful to want to compromise quality and reputation to "cash in" with selling the rights to sequels to companies who cant make a decent follow-up....altho they did that with NWN2 and DA2...here's to hoping they dont make a habbit out of it

All I want in this game is bigger maps and a large area to explore and I don't want to visit same area many a times like Dragon Age 2. Other than that no regrets, waiting eagerly for this.

Red_lath

@BlackBaldwin I see ur point and I agree on the universe in ME2 was nothing compare to ME1. It was shrinked and the exploration was limited to resources and a DLC...that sucks. However, character customization was good enough, just different. I think that learn one of your mate's skills was a great idea, however, there were not a lot of options in the way one rise Sheppard compared to its former predecessor. For me, story line telling was just great, not a linear plot, dynamic action and quests and fast pace, thus, I disagree with you and say the plot was way better in ME2. I guess both agree on ME3 should have more RPG traits, planet's exploration with the bases and all from ME1 improved, great playability and stunning story telling.

i hope they combine the epic story telling of origins with the faster combat of DA2 into a fantastic game. perhaps traveling to multiple lands via boat? that was an opportunity missed with isabela, i think.

What dannyatkinson isn't that unrealistic. The same thins happened to Origin, so it's just that all over again. A shining example would be that BioWare, when approached about the issue of gay relationships in Mass Effect, said that it would never happen because it's simply not part of their plans, and this was pre-EA. Now we hear otherwise. I knew this would happen, I knew EA would poison everything, and I knew the last best RPG maker would be lost to us. I just hope they original Devs move on to form a new company and we see quality emerge again someday.

dannyatkinson
dannyatkinson

It is simple people. The first Dragon Age was made by Bioware. Dragon Age 2 etc will all be made by fracking EA. EA never never never leaves a development team alone. The just plain lied to Bioware and to their fans. EA's hands are on everything now. Expect Bioware to be dissolved by next year.

Bought Origins and thought it was great. I travel a lot, so I even bought the PC version so I could continue playing it. Like many people, I was thinking that Bioware was great! Even though I was hyped, I decided to wait a little bit before buying DA:2. Reviews were bad, so I rented it. Well, I did not like it. I have seen this happen before - with other gaming companies. DA:2 will not get my money. Rushed unfinished game that alienates your core fans = loyalty lost. DA:3 will have to be really good for me to get it now....

The Bioware products aways delivered quality since the KOTOR series till mass effect and DAO(witch expains the high sales of DA2)i will not deny them a look on DA3 but i expect a real role playing this time.I hope the high sales don´t cause a illusion of success.

@Phil-teh-Pirate don't get your hopes to high , thats why da 2 failed so miserable they will probably do as ea did with the nfs games , and activision with cod, they will release a half finished game , then they will release more dlc to make it better, i've seen it and it will be as i say (i hope i am wrong , but times are changing and console gamers and pc gamers will receive half done products, then they will make more dlc to link the games), you've seen it with me 2 less content than the first and a tone of dlc ( and me2 was a good game), da 2 was awefull (yes from my point of view it was, and i hate it so much because it was the next big thing) now the next big thing is the witcher 2 which didn't disappoint me ...a i said i will bash da 2 until i forget about it and i am starting to forget it

A mixture of DAO and DAII would be nice. DAO: Great Story, well-designed places. DA II: Emotion, Animation and Characters are all great (Of course not the rubbish story). Looking forward to it! ^^

Lets be fair. We can't dismiss them for making more Dragon Ages when we still say Final Fantasy 7 was a work of art. It's a good series, it really is, they just changed too much gameplay wise for me to enjoy it. I hope they fix it in 3.

Opinions are like a-holes, everybody's gotta have one. Some of us liked DA2 yes of course your tastes are so sophisticated. Bet you DA 2 does better than the Witcher 2. I want more DLC for DC an expansion or two wish it were given the same treatment as DA1. To the encephelopod that stated, and you can imagine his nasal voice-pale face and decrepit crooked fingers "DA2 was cash-in", sorry corky all games produced by companies are cash-ins they aren't works of art but entertainment. None of these companies are altruistic and are doing this for anyone's benefit. Its all a profit motive sunshine.

Never ever Dragon Age again. Fell in to their trap and bought Dragon Age II. Playing The Witcher II now, and anticipating Skyrim, it seems a waste of time to play through and finish DAII. Maybe if the game was more freeform.......
