Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze delayed

Wii U game from Retro Studios pushed to February 2014.

by

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze has been delayed to February 2014, Nintendo announced today during the latest Nintendo Direct video presentation.

This is the second delay for the Wii U game. It was first slated for release in November before being pushed to a December 6 release.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is the first installment in the series for a high-definition platform. The game features side views and different camera angles to enable new gameplay experiences, according to Nintendo.

The Wii U title also sports a two-player mode, where characters like Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong will be available in addition to Donkey Kong.

Guess DK milk got a little sour this time...

Dammit. I wanted this game. Now, Mario 3d land is the only game on the WiiU I want this holiday. This game is done this is a strategy for the bare early 2014 window.

This is kind of predictable for Nintendo. I completely expected this, but it's still a bit of a disappointment.

One of my friends said something earlier this year along the lines of "look at this killer lineup the Wii U has for the end of the year!",  And I was shaking my head knowing that delays were inbound. Hopefully this will be the only one.

On a lighter note David Wise is working on the soundtrack.....David Wise!!

This is really odd for them, Nintendo nearly never delayed games but this year has been really tough, it feels like everything got delayed. I hope 2014 will be big for them because this year was really bad and with PS4 and XboxOne on the horizon this doesn't bode well for them.

I was going to be busy with the PS4, Watch Dogs, Batman : Arkham Origins, Assassin's Creed IV, Super Mario 3D World, The Legend of Zelda : A Link Between Worlds so I'm really not that disappointed in this news.

Look at the bright side, February next year is looking really good. You have InFamous : Second Son, Thief and now DKC : Tropical Freeze. Let's not forget Dark Souls II coming out in March as well. The first quarter of next year is looking great :)

Well it seems clear to me that Nintendo is banking on 2014 to be the year in which they really turn the console around. It's better for the game to be delayed so Retro can continue to fine tune it, but it also shows how weak the Wii U has been in 2013 and how it is being ignored in favor of the PS4 and Xbox One.

If Nintendo has a mediocre holiday this year then there is going to be immense pressure for them to deliver in 2014. As a Nintendo fan and owner of both the 3DS and Wii U I hope they can succeed.

I'm totally fine with this. I'd rather them delay the game than release an unfinished product.

I'm waiting for this game. It's just two months of delay, and there are a lot of games for this year.

Nintendo's good news keep coming.

So much for that Christmas lineup for the Wii U.  Dead on arrival.

I'm fine with this being delayed. There's so many games coming that I want to get that I really couldn't afford to get this right away anyway.

Megavideogamer

This is not good for Nintendo. The wii U needs games during the Christmas season. Donkey Kong Country series is one of the flagship games that would have sold well at Christmas.

Not surprised at all - I mean, there will be big games coming, also Mario, so why not push it to february, when there will be actually nothing to play... and more money to spend after christmas.

I was actually expecting delay, they wouldn't make as much money first month

I'm less concerned about the delay as I am about the hole this leaves in the WiiU's lineup. Nintendo can't afford to have any more lulls in releases like this past year. They need to get on top of their scheduling to keep a constant flow of software coming from here on out. That means a lot more R&D to make sure there's always more stuff in the works and potentially ready to publish.

I think this is actually a good move by Nintendo, and I wouldn't be surprised to see more delays. There is just too much competition out there right now; they will need to let the GTA V hype die down a bit, and then let the rush for PS4 and Xbox one die down as well. Otherwise this title among others may get lost in the mix.

That's not a big deal.  The Wii U doesn't launch until 2014, right?

What?  It's out NOW?  Does Nintendo know it's out already?  'Cause I would think they'd have gotten some games ready to play on it if they knew it was already out...

But delay is a good thing, They maybe make it more fun or they fix some bugs.

I read about this a few days ago, though I think it was just a rumor at the time.

I'll end up with this later. To be honest after the first DKC I wasn't into this series. in 2014 I'm more looking forward to X, Bayonetta 2, and Zelda U.

If Nintendo doesn't care about the Wii-U then why should I?

BradBurns

@denhoffi I disagree, I think Nintendo has a history delaying games. The plus side is that they're usually really well made when they do come out.

Yomigaeru

@komuchen Well, I suppose it depends on preference, but I believe both Lords of Shadow 2 and Lightning Returns release in February. Of course, neither of those will be one Wii U (at least not at launch), so it's a bit of a moot point.

Meta-Gnostic

@ignautius Nintendo underestimated what it takes to make HD games. You would think they would have learned from what MS and Sony went through, but I guess not. Sad.

Yomigaeru
Yomigaeru

@bunchanumbers It'd be great if X really did come out next year. I think I'll spend the entirety of this coming November playing Xenoblade exclusively (like I did last year).

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers

@songoku0206 its because they care that they are not rushing out a game in development. They want to make a quality product. Maybe MS could learn a thing or two from this.

komuchen

@Yomigaeru  LoS2 was delayed so many times I wouldn't be surprised if there would be another one.

You would be kinda right, if those games were released on Wii U. My point is, Wii U will have load of games by that time, so people won't have money to spend, also christmas incoming. On february there will be nothing that interesting or hot seller like GTA or Mario

@Class_Act998675 I think their opinion of us has a lot more to do with them thinking they can pee on your leg and tell you its raining... and you believe them.  Don't be such a corporate play-thing and have a little respect for yourself.

ignautius

@Meta-Gnostic Ignoring technology trends will do that to you.  Look at newspapers and the music industry.

Nintendo ignored disc-based media, HD, and the internet.  Now look at them.

songoku0206
songoku0206

@bunchanumbers @songoku0206 Just like Pikmin 3 a game that all the Nintendo Fanboys swear up and down it was going to be a system seller. Nintendo is in no position to delays games.

@Class_Act998675 Come on, son!  Hit me up with some facts!  I learned how to read and everything so you can lay waste to my existence with a barrage of facts about how awesome the Wii U is doing!

I'm all ears whenever you finish what I'm sure will be a well-written and fact-filled report on how awesome the Wii U is selling right now.

ignautius
ignautius

@Meta-Gnostic I get what you were saying.  I was just saying that them still being behind on creating HD content is the latest entry in a larger problem Nintendo has where they fail to pick up on technology trends... despite being a tech company...

Nintendo doesn't know how to program in HD because they chose to ignore HD for so long, and now it's biting them.

Though, I don't remember Microsoft or Sony ever having these issues.  Or at least having and then using them as an excuse.  Maybe they blamed problems on it, I'm just saying I don't remember.

Meta-Gnostic
Meta-Gnostic

@ignautius What I was referring to is a bit different. Nintendo has to keep delaying games because they underestimated how much time it takes to create HD content. I

f they had paid attention to the problems other developers encountered with HD, especially Japanese developers, they would have had a much better idea and less delays.

@Class_Act998675 I can read THIS:

https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/ad-hominem

What fact did I ignore?  PS did CDs, N64 didn't.  PS3 and 360 did HD, Wii did "progressive scan", Xbox and PS2 actually started building an online community, Nintendo is STILL struggling to get their online taken seriously as evidenced by things like Arkham Origins not shipping with Wii U online multiplayer.

So!  What facts did I ignore?

Nintendo cutting their sales forcasts in light of the Wii U being about as popular as warm milk to people running a marathon?  'Cause I actually saw that.

Rayman Origins being turned from a Wii U exclusive into a multi-platform game because the Wii U is selling like garbage?  'Cause I saw that too.

Nintendo failing to get their platform off the launch pad DESPITE no next-gen competition?  'Cause I saw that, too.

Two competing consoles coming in this holiday season while Nintendo just lost one of their marquee titles for the holidays?  Which is sad that DKC is needing to turn into a system-saver in the first place.  'Cause I saw that.

So let's hear it.  Tell me how good the Wii U has done this year with next to no competition.

Class_Act998675

@ignautiusThat's ironic when all you trolls do is ignore facts to bash Nintendo. Hell, you morons can't even read.

@songoku0206 @bunchanumbers Pikmin 3 is a system seller to me bro. Now if you want to talk about global numbers then Wii Fit U and Wii Party U will probably cover that, but Nintendo won't sell me their system with them!
