Sydney residents are no strangers to publicity stunts, but when a banana mound that is five metres high turned up at Custom House in Circular Quay this morning, eyebrows were raised. It's true that apes like bananas and Donkey Kong Country Returns was released in Australia today, but surely the two aren't linked? GameSpot AU put a quick call into the ministry of banana affairs (aka Nintendo) and confirmed that the gigantic pile of yellow fruit was indeed placed there to celebrate gaming's most famous ape's latest outing. But it doesn't end there.

Help yourself to bananas everyone.

From 5:30 p.m., Sydneysiders will be able to head down to Circular Quay and play Donkey Kong Country Returns on a giant inflated screen next to the enormous stack of fruit. Nintendo is also encouraging people to bring a bag and help themselves to as much fruit as they can carry, with any remaining fruit being donated to OzHarvest.

Coffs Harbour's giant icon--The Big Banana--also fell victim to a Donkey Kong prank this morning, with local residents waking up to a giant bite mark missing from the oversized fruit.
