Dishonored to become franchise

Bethesda says sales of stealth-action game "far exceeding" internal expectations, making future installments likely.

Bethesda's stealth-action game Dishonored is on track to become the company's next franchise. Public relations manager Pete Hines told Destructoid that the game is selling beyond internal expectations, making future installments likely.

"I can tell you that Dishonored is far exceeding our sales expectations, which is especially cool considering it’s new IP facing a host of well-established franchises this quarter," Hines said. "We did terrific numbers again this past weekend, both in stores and on Steam, where Dishonored was listed as the #1 selling title over the holiday weekend. And Dishonored has really sold well overseas. So, we’re very pleased and appreciate all the fans that have supported Dishonored and [developer Arkane Studios]. We clearly have a new franchise."

Dishonored launched in October and was the United States' fourth-best selling game of the month. It was also the only non-sequel to make the top-ten chart during the month. The game's first expansion--Dunwall City Trials--is due out December 11 for $5.

In a move that surprised exactly no one....

Not too surprised here. These big devs don't just make video games anymore. A new IP is a shot at creating a new franchise. A video game will only be just a video game if it doesn't sell well. In other words: no movies, no novels, no comics, etc....

I didn't care so much for Corvo's tale, but I'm very intrigued at what the rest of the world of Dishonored holds, so I say go for it.

@kartelas - excuse me! The worst developer the world has ever seen!? You seriously got it backwards; they take that long to make their games because, hello, they feature 200 - 300+ hrs of gameplay, huge, detailed open worlds and hundreds of characters! As far as the bugs, yea, they're not fun but with soo many more variables and elements in their games compared to almost anything else out there, some bugs are to be expected. Besides, its not like they refuse to patch them and are you really going to argue about a studio that's won more GOTYs than almost any dev in the last decade!? Don't embarrass yourself.

I thought it was massively overrated but that's just me.  There's nothing technically wrong with the game, I just found it boring... a bit like BioShock.

Dishonored is a great game, and I'm pleased it will likely become a franchise. Arkane has displayed its proficiency and I am confident that Bethesda will not intrude in Arkane's vision for the franchise (whatever it may be) like so many other publishers do. EA especially.

i feel good for this studio. They deserve better than to be owned by Bethesda who is by far the worst developer the world has ever seen.People who wonder why Bethesda doesnt milk the elder scrolls franchise so much its because they are so bad at developing that it takes them minimum 3-4 years to release a buggy game.

As long as it doesn't turn into a generic revenge story with a tacked on multiplayer, I'm all for this.

I just beat the game with a no hit, no kill playthrough, and it really is a delight to see a new franchise come of this. It's a great game, and I found it very similar in style to Bioshock with a little MGS mixed in. The ending was a little rushed, but I look forward to playing sequels in this series for years to come. I just hope they space it out and not try to release one every freaking year like CoD or Assassin's Creed.

Dishonored was awesome.   People comparing it to Bioshock have never played it.  It does not resemble Bioshock nor does it play like Bioshock.  This game took risks that big IPs would never take.  So when you play the damn game, get back to me and tell me how it is.

So, it's probably a good thing I went out and got this and invested in it?

Always happy to see a new IP succeed even though I don't think the game was anything to write home about. Hopefully, this will encourage companies to develop new IPs for the next generation of consoles rather than just develop sequels.

I thought Dishonored was pretty overrated.  Figuring out the maps and the ways through and around enemies was fun, but the gameplay felt pretty clunky.  The whole ocean themed steampunk screamed Bioshock as well.

Not bashing the game - I liked it, but it's not among the best this year.

I would like them make the missions less repetative. Go strangle him him to victory is just way too monotome

This is because there has been nothing that could compete with the old Thief games for many years. People recognized that this was like those old games and picked it up.

For god's sake...Dishonored is Arkane Studios' game, not Bethesda's.

i've never doubt it ,the world itself is full of details and lore and alot more worth to explore on every single inchs. but... do not release it every year ok?

I was really surprised by how good Dishonored was. It's one of the best games I've played in recent years. I'll probably play through it again during the Christmas period.

Short single player campaing is worth it, since I've been waiting for a game like this since Thief 1 & 2. This has nothing on Assassin's Creed or Bioshock. It's revamped Thief, and my... can I say I cried on the first level, because it brought me such good memories of a real sneaker protagonist.

would love to see a new dishonored. its a good game i love the story and the decision making and of course the stealth and the magics. finished it just not it took me 2 days so yeah returning it for AC3

Played the game, got everything on my first playthrough, replayed the last mission to get the second ending and lastly went on a rampage with the blade and powers. I don't really remember how long it took, whether two or three days, but i do remember that it felt short and disappointing. It'd be ok to rent it I guess.

That's good, I'd love to see the mechanics expanded upon for the next game, like making non-lethal harder to pull off with guards having a tendancy to wake up, and enemies adapting over the course of the game to your most used techniques, etc.

what  the hell are people saying that this game is overrated, this game is more UNDERRATED! there was never a better stealth action game from this ever created! dishonored is like a baby of bioshock and assassins creed... people complain for the short single player, that's your own fault for spending most of your time playing games instead of going out sometimes for some fresh air and smoke weed it's logic that it will be short if you play over 3 hours everyday!

Liked the game, loved the fact that after following its' progress since announcement, they never made bold promises that never panned out.

This is welcome news IF they go ahead and plan future games to take place in the other cities across Gristol--reading the books about those places really had me thinking about exploring them.  I don't feel there's anything left in Dunwall for them to explore.

The only thing that has stopped me from getting this so far has been lack of time. I welcome new takes and innovation. This games looks very well produced as well, which can never hurt..

@electronic_eye  @kartelas You forgot that their games feature the worst animations in the industry, that even 16 bit games rival, and they feature the same graphics engine that was used in morrowind-just upgraded a little.

@ewjiml Sounds to me like you obviously didn't play Bioshock if yer' gonna' make a shallow statement like that.  I loved both franchises and if you can't see the similarities, you have to be trolling.  Both are great games in their own respect, but there are similarities between the two are pretty hard to overlook.  Beautiful, yet grimy worlds in the midst of their own self-destruction, right-hand weapon/left hand power.  Similar sound effects and actions upon retrieval of loot, lots of enemies and NPC's in masks, etc.  Nobody said they were the same game, but to deny similarities is a little silly.  I saw a lot of games in Dishonored.  Bioshock, Thief, and Metal Gear are the ones that came to mind first.

@aestevenson How can it not be among the best of the year?! I swear, if COD is better then this game I give up on the gaming world just because credit will never be given where it should be.  The game was imaginative, different and overall just amazing.  Every game has its problems and this one was no different but people that take the time to play the game in different ways can see that the developers put some much thought into creating a new IP that fans of the company can enjoy.  Dishonored should be remembered because it was an underdog in sales and competed with other bigger games and still managed to stand out.  Give the game some credit yo, open yourself to new games.

 @buccomatic

so? you don't need to buy the DLC to have your >full game< what you buy that is it you don't need the DLC, they offer the DLC for those who want >more< from the game and to expand the game a little bit that's all... i myself am not buying the DLC's because i'm happy with the content they all ready gave... so go and complain about DLC's to someone else and not to me
