Demon's Souls 2? No chance, Atlus says

"Can 100 percent confirm there will NOT be a Demon's Souls 2," Atlus PR manager says. "That's Sony's call."

[UPDATE] In a follow-up email with GameSpot, Hardin clarified his original comments, saying, "While I guess *technically* it's not impossible, since Sony JP owns the IP, I don't want anyone to get their hopes up."

The original story is below.

Atlus PR manager John Hardin has commented on the possibility of a sequel to the 2009's fiendishly difficult PlayStation 3-exclusive role-playing game Demon's Souls, and you might not like his answer.

"Can 100 percent confirm there will NOT be a Demon's Souls 2. :(," Hardin wrote in the comments section of a PlayStation Blog post.

His comments came in response to a fan who asked if Atlus was going to make Demon's Souls 2 for the PlayStation 4, but it looks like the game won't make an appearance on any system. Pressed for an explanation as to why the prospect of Demon's Souls 2 is grim, Hardin explained that it's Sony's decision to make.

"That's Sony's call. From what I've heard around the Internet's, Demon's Souls is one big Gordian knot," he said.

Demon's Souls developer From Software has since created spiritual successor Dark Souls and its upcoming sequel Dark Souls II will launch on March 11. For more on Demon's Souls, check out GameSpot's review.

And what the fuck does Atlus know? they were only hired to publish the game in the US, 0 involvement in the game's development, and the ip is owned by Sony anyway, only they can confirm or deny the possibility of a sequel.

Never played Demon Souls but I did play Dark Souls and I could be wrong but doesn't seem like there is much of a difference.

Altus doesn't own the ip, so why would they be involved unless they published it like Demons souls. Hopefully Sony does invest in a sequel, since demons souls is the better game.

Doesn't matter whether it's Demon's souls 2 or Dark Souls 3.....I just need a new Souls game on PS4! I hate it that I have to play Dark Souls 2 on PS3(gave the console to my GF)

I really thought Dark Souls was the sexual successor to demon souls....or was it something else.

groowagon

why would Demon's Souls 2 be even needed? i thought Dark Souls was that. just a different name, ffs. i mean, there are no unique mechanics to Demon's Souls that's supposed to differentiate it from Dark Souls in a meaningful way.

it's. just. a. name.

There is no need for Demon's Souls 2. I am more than satisfied with Dark Souls and I have no doubt DKSII will deliver the same satisfaction. We should all be grateful that we have these games in the first place. It's not everyday you get your favorite games of all time.

I've only played Demon's Souls. I'll never forget the joy of knocking black phantom Miralda off the ledge of the pit lol I was only a few levels up and started with dark tendency.

Loved the game, but man it took me so much time and commitment I chickened off Dark souls and probably will Dark souls 2 too.

I've played through Demon's Souls and Dark Souls numerous times, and despite the fact that Dark Souls is better in just about every way I still like playing Demon's Souls more. I don't know what it is... maybe just nostalgia and memories? I definitely like the environments in Demon's Souls a lot more.

Sony has a good track record as of late for making the right calls. Hopefully this means there will be a Demons Souls II afterall if it is up to them, There is obviously a high demand for the game. I guess we will have to wait and see, I'll keep my fingers crossed .....

Please port demons souls to the vita at least. Until then I will be resigned to sit here and cry.

In terms of atmosphere, Demon's Souls was superior. But Dark Souls trumps in every other aspect (combat, open world, lore, etc.)

While I've never actually played Demon's Souls, watching my friend play that and get his ass kicked was what originally gave me the interest in Dark Souls. Without that original experience, I probably would never give Dark Souls a second glance. I understand there may be a clear difference between the two games and that can create some hostilities but lets honestly wait until Dark Souls 2 drops and people get some time with that game. Demon's Souls vets shouldn't just claim DeS is not DS 1 and 2.... we haven't even played 2 yet. Wait and see if that game is up to standards or not, then decide.

@seven7swords  well dark souls is essentially demon souls 2 it does what a sequel should do, take the original and make it better

@xboxdone74  To me Dark is better, but the truth is: more souls games is better them less!

@anshanlord  If they can make a PC port then it should be easy enough to make a PS4 and XB1 port as well. The architectural differences are minor going from PC to PS4/XB1 compared to going from the 360 and especially the PS3 to PC.

@SipahSalar  DEMON's SOULs Is better than DARK SOULS in 2 aspects of the game: Graphics and Music

The Graphics are way better and Detail-Oriented than Dark souls.........and the Music is perfect and creepier than in Dark souls............The only thing that DARK SOULS wins over Demon's Souls is Gameplay and Difficulty.........Dark Souls is HARDER and LONGER to play, it takes a VERY LONG TIME to finish and is extremely difficult but great if you like to be playing a game for months to try to finish 100% of the game.    So to me they both go hand in hand, you can't play one without playing the other, they are BOTH my favorite games!!

Poison-tooth
Poison-tooth

@SipahSalar  Its very similar in general but there is some core differences. One of them is the world's design. In Demon Souls you have a central hub called the Nexus where you can access the various levels while in Dark Souls the world is open.

Btw bryanj2006 is wrong in my opinion... Many things he consider positive are flaws (layout,  healing consumables, no limit to casting, etc.)

bryanj2006
bryanj2006

@SipahSalarAnyone who says there's no difference has clearly not played both games. The better experience and production value was clearly put into Demon's Soul's, Dark Souls needed 8 or 9 updates and it's still not as polished a Demon's Soul's. Also the vast majority of players prefer Demon's Soul's bc of the fact, they put no limit on how many times you use spells etc bc you have consumable items you can pickup or farm for to refill your bar and keep using it more. Also Demon's Soul's has far less cheap feeling deaths vs Dark Souls. Dark Souls isn't nearly as hard, however the deaths feel extremely cheap, bc they may force you to have a specific item, or equipment or not make the 1st time you fight a boss he may be invincible. Demon's Soul's also rewards exploration vs Dark Souls doesn't really, which is a shame bc it becomes a open world later on. Demon's Soul's has a nexus where you store items, upgrade, by new items/spells and interact with npc's. Demon's Soul's level layout makes way more sense for the type of game it is, Dark Souls just has a little bit of everything, except it seems lazy and just seems like a lot of random locations, and also the online is still broken to this day. Dark Souls uses your ps3 as a server (they didn't buy real servers) so its near impossible to play with specific people. However Demon's Soul's had no such issue, it had real servers and I was able to play with specific people almost every time we tried. You can however upgrade armor in Dark Souls, but even this is restricted bc of the fact the better armor/gear can only be upgraded with a specific item, which didn't come somewhat available until about 15 months after launch bc they did 2 updates, then we didn't see another one for about 13 months. So even the best parts of Dark Souls were held back by laziness, or bad programming.

@SipahSalar  Nothing, Atlus couldnt use Demon anymore so they changed the name to Dark Souls. Dark souls, is Demon souls 2.

@groowagon  Because Demon's Souls is a Sony's owned IP. So from a point of view Dark Souls is an impostor. Although a great one!

@tightwad34  Gratefulness has nothing to do with it. The Souls community will love DKSII and I'm sure very few are wishing Demon's Souls 2 was made *rather* than Dark Souls 2. They both absolutely *have* to be viewed as completely different franchises, working independently of one another, at this point. The "need" for Demon's Souls 2, I'm sorry to say, has nothing to do with your satisfaction of Dark Souls. Or anyone's satisfaction of Dark Souls. Or even the similarity in the gameplay between all games in the Souls' series. The reason *anyone* would want a Demon's Souls sequel would be to continue the story that game had to offer, which is COMPLETELY different from anything you're going to find in a Dark Souls game. The differences in story, setting, and atmosphere, are night and day. And while there certainly is no "need" for a sequel to Demon's Souls, with the massive popularity Dark Souls now has as its own IP, you'd better believe there most definitely is a, quite massive, *desire* for a sequel within the Souls' community.

With all that said, I still certainly believe it wont happen... Because I'm sure FromSoft is gonna want to make money. And you're not gonna cash in if you're making another PS exclusive. So, unless Sony DEVELOPS Demon's Souls 2 (Hahahahaha... I shutter to think what kinda quick-time-event slap in the face to the video game industry that would be "Demon's Souls 2 - The Last of Us"), we'll probably, quite unfortunately in my estimation, never see a sequel to the Souls game that started it all.

@diskotheque  Demon's Souls really captured the atmosphere better. The environments in Dark Souls are great, don't get me wrong, but nothing in Dark Souls compared to the overwhelming sense of hopelessness and dread you got from playing levels like The Tower of Latria or the Valley of Defilement for the first time. Learning King Allant's fate and why the demon's were stealing everyone's souls really solidified it all (especially for Ostrava). Dark Souls 2 will be amazing I have no doubt, but I would really love to see Demon's Souls 2 on PS4 in a few years.

@normanislost @seven7swords  Pretty much. I do feel that Dark Souls was the easier of the two (though only marginally so) and Demon's Souls atmosphere is definitely darker.

@bryanj2006 @SipahSalar

Pay no attention to Bryanj.  The "vast majority " do not like Demon's Souls better.  Demon's souls is an inferior game, in my opinion.  They worked hard to make dark souls better and they succeeded in many ways.  Dark Souls is most definitely a sequel to Demon's, named differently due to copyright reasons.  I love both games, but saying Demon's souls is wayy better is completely inaccurate, as is saying that the vast majority of us souls fans prefer Demon's. The demon's crew views it through rose tinted glasses.  The online was broken, with unlimited insta heals, scraping spears, and glitches.  Dark Souls has lag issues but it much more balanced. Gameplay wise, it's straight up better with the addition of poise.  As well, dark souls has an ingenious interconnected world the likes of which i've never seen in a 3D game.   Demon's Souls requires you to spend an inordinate amount of time in loading screens warping back to the nexus, where dark souls is mainly just long unbroken gameplay stretches.  The creators heard the calls for change and made those changes.  The only real negative, to me, is the server based multiplayer, which was much more reliable in Demon's.

Don't let the Demon's Souls purists skew your view,  they just played it first and are often super attached to it, even to the parts that were broken.  Demon's had all the potential, and Dark Souls got closer to the end goal.  Hopefully Dark Souls 2 will be a best of both worlds situation!

@elitistsponge I would totally play the shit out of Demon's Souls 2, but I am more than happy with Dark Souls and as long as they keep making these games I don't care what it is.

@elitistsponge @tightwad34  Do not underestimate the power of Sony, there could always be a day when From Software could go bust, there other titles are okay but nothing truely at the level of the soul series..... Armored Core, however I did like Tenchu Z

@xboxdone74  I can respect almost every point you made as to why you feel Demon's Souls was the better game, but that whole "game of the year" reasoning needs to go. That is entirely dependent on what other games are in the running for that particular year and is no way a negative statement about Dark Souls. The fact that it was even nominated speaks volumes since there was brutal competition for the title in 2011 and Demon's Souls had the advantage of being extremely fresh compared to everything else in 2009.

Uiltetwr
Uiltetwr

@xboxdone74  At first I preferred Dark Souls but as I come to play more and more I realized that demon souls was much more polished and featured many quality aspects that were excluded or dumb downed in Dark for instance, Blood Stains and messaging was really key to the demon souls experience, I used blood stains all the time to be weary of traps and i made use of messages either to be helpful or too be trolled by someone and even when i put down a few of my own I occasionally got a +1 recommendation which helped restore me in times of need, Demon Souls is the true souls game, But Dark is a good successor

xboxdone74
xboxdone74

Oh, and also there are true stealth builds in demons souls. Something dark doesn't have.

xboxdone74
xboxdone74

Now if you'd like another answer, from someone who says demons souls is better, here you go, from a vet.

Demons souls has

Dedicated servers so superior multiplayer

Better weapons balancing

True stealth builds

You can play as the boss in another players game

Better blood stain animations

Better more fluid attack animations

Demons souls won game of the year, dark souls didn't

xboxdone74
xboxdone74

Wrong. Vets like Demons Souls better, and if you had played it you'd know why.

Demons souls has

Better weapons balancing

Dedicated servers so superior pvp and coop

You can play the boss in another players game

Better and more fluid attack animations

Better bloodstain animations

Better level layout.

And Demons Souls won game of the year here on gamespot. Dark souls didn't.

@ashlake @bryanj2006 @SipahSalar  Thank you bryan and ash for the detailed replies, i think my question is pretty much answered. It doesnt really matter which one is better, i just wanted to know the factual differences.
