DC Universe Online lighting Green Lantern DLC

Sony Online bringing first add-on to superhero-themed MMORPG this summer for $10.

by

DC Universe Online is back up and running after hackers proved to be its personal kryptonite. And with its service restoration complete, Sony Online Entertainment can commence rolling out new content for the superhero-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

Power rings for all!

Today, SOE said that DCUO's first batch of paid downloadable content will be available for both the PC and PlayStation 3 versions of the game this summer. The Green Lantern has been chosen as the subject of this first wave of DLC.

Titled Fight for the Light, the add-on pack lets players create heroes that make use of Green Lantern-like light-based powers. It also includes three new gameplay scenarios. The STAR Labs mission sees players battling it out against Brainiac, while Coast City sees players battling against the Red Lantern Corps in Hal Jordan's hometown.

Lastly, Sciencells Prison sees heroes join Guy Gardner stop a prison break from being incited by Sinestro. Villains will join Sinestro, as they seek to retrieve Lyssa Drak from her prison cell on the planet.

The Fight for the Light DLC will cost $10. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of DC Universe Online.

After losing control of their patrons personal information, the resulting stock decline and loss profits from any lawsuits, SOE thinks we should cover the bill for this DLC. It would be nice if game companies explicitly said upon original sale of their product if they intend to charge to complete the product. More and more the gamin industry is intentionally releasing games in parts to squeeze more money out of the public. I like it, but Starcraft II is a perfect example, this just seems to be the new business model. Sorry SOE's losses are their problem and mine are mine. The day they care about my bottom line and stop selling new games for $50 just because they are new not because the demand is that great, I will care about their bottom line and profits/losses. After such a foul up and profits for decades, the VERY least they could do is provide good will content and call any loss good will and PR. Shame on SOE.

First they lose your credit info, now they want to charge you for in game transactions and dlc for something you already pay monthly to play. WOW. Is this really sitting well with the majority of people?

this fat dc cash cow is diseased and needs to be put down, the game sucked, as far as depth and fun went, utterly horrible, my dc friend doesnt agree, but thats just DC goggles imo... the game is utterly basic in story/gameplay/execution, less depth than the piss infested kiddie pool in the local community center. Thank you soe for making your lame ducks so ez to spot, luckily i didnt pay a cent for the privilage of your game gouging my eyeballs for 2 months....at which point i completed 2 chars and most, if not all the content... pls die, thank you.

WOAH WOAH, I'm Paying more money on top of a monthly subscription that should have already covered such small extra content.........as someone before has said. the games industry has gone to sh*t.

@mrboone01 Oh this is nothing new. They were doing this back with Everquest 2. Only back then they called them "Adventure Packs" rather than DLC.

They are also giving you 3 new Alert Zones. I will give you the fact that its not 15 more hours of game content, but look at Call of Duty all you get for $10 is 5 maps and sometimes it isnt even that much. Granted I would like to see a little more put into the DLC but I doubt they have released all the details yet either. But you do raise some valid points.

FaYt2021
FaYt2021

@RAPTORLunchbox Yeah, when an expansion for WoW comes out you pay for that, but it comes with 100+ hours of extra content. This DLC is just a new class and a new armor set... not more then 15 hours worth of extra game play for a game that cost $15 a month already.

RAPTORLunchbox

Why is everyone having such a problem with paying $10 for the DLC? Its better than paying $30 for the new content like you have to do in World of Warcraft and Rift. This is an MMO and whenever something this big gets released for an MMO you have to pay for it. The monthly subscription fee is for the constant maintenance of the game and the constant updates that you do get for FREE! Yes you are paying $15 a month but you are also getting a lot of content that you arent paying for. In just the last update they gave a new hard instance and new duos and they didnt charge you for that. Bottom line its an MMO and expect to pay for big updates like this. If you have normally played MMOs then you are used to this, if you havent, then get used to it because this is how it works. Me personally I am all for it. Keep the content coming because I really enjoy this game!

Overpriced DLC announced for a sub-par game. Seems to be a recurring theme lately. Not one I'm buying into either.

TBear7130

$10. Thank my good judgement for dropping this game after the first month. This is disgusting. Pay monthly fees and for expansion content on a game that didnt have the content or complexity/depth after release. As a console game it is meh ok as a PC mmo epic fail. Don't let them sucker $10 out of ya for nothing really new but a few textures, either on mobs or environment. If people do not buy these crap packs and users expect them to be a part of monthly fees or purchase price, the consumers can force the change. Boo.

From what im hearing from places like Massively and MMORPG, this DLC is pretty much bubkis from the start. Instead of being a light warrior (i.e GLC, Sinestro Corps) your character is a "reserve" w/o the powers or the emblem, which is a ripoff from the start. Apperantly DCU has an issue with multiple people running around with light powers saving the world, as its apperantly not "canon". The last time I checked on this title, Canon was thrown out the window with this gaming universe. as everyone received shared powers from "The Future"...

hate to say it but i think they are doing this to get ppl back. they originally said they weren't gonna do rings, and i think that ppl are leaving they are now putting this in. at the beginning so many ppl wanted the rings.

Stonesourpuss

Too little too late, I'm afraid. I've gone back to WoW because of all the wasted potential in DCUO. Had an expansion like this come along before I lost interest in the game, I'd have been all over it. What they have planned with the power rings and an overall new power set sounds worth $10 (seriously, people... we're paying $5 for new fighters in MvC3 and Mortal Kombat at this point, $10 for new content on an mmo isn't really much to get pissy over), but I wonder how many folks will still be playing the game at this point to pony up that cost...

FaYt2021
FaYt2021

Charging a dime for this is absolutely ridiculous! This DLC is just a patch with a new class, that should be free since if you've been playing since release you've already paid about $150 ($60 for game, 6 months x$15) for this game! @Frosty192 I used to think it was okay to pay for a monthly fee on an MMO, until I met Guild Wars that had almost as many players as WoW but is still Buy it once and play it forever. Now Guild Wars 2 is going to also Buy it and play for free.

Frosty192
Frosty192

DLC in an mmo? Should be free because you pay a monthly fee. So what is the point in that fee again?

Geee!!! I cant believe it. Mediocre semi finished game 59 usd monthly fee 15 usd dlc 10 usd Epic fail i said id before and i say it now that game is crap. No doubt the servers ar empty

Kisalon

warhawk the reason other games manage just fine without monthly fees is course they have "in-game stores" where you buy things instead... which again people actually use ALOT... nothing is ever free in this world we live in.

warhawk-geeby
warhawk-geeby

To be fair if you subscribe to play a game then you're a fool regardless. I don't care whether it's World of Warcraft or what, I could think of much better things to spend my money on. I appreciate the companies have to keep their servers up and running, but how come other games manage it just fine? I dunno.. I'm rather skeptical about subscription services altogether. Seems to me like most folks are just a tad daft.

can someone tell my if the game is still that rubbish like in beta? Im glad you can see on things like that the true user friendlyness of a publisher Lets compare it with ff14, the pc version is still free and without monthly fee cause the publishers dont thing the game is good enought yet, so no fees will the ps3 version will come out and the game is good enough in eyes of community and the publisher I bet you wont ever see such from soe

@Henninger The same way WoW Charges 30-40 dollars for an expansion, along with a monthly fee and along with charging people for dumb things like special mounts and gear.

smoman5000
smoman5000

Wow, thats just ridiculous. So you're buying content as if the game is f2p....while also paying a monthly $15, the fans will eat this "expansion" up then SOE will do it on a regular basis.

aepervius

I wonder how many people still play this game. I looked at xfire (yes i know due to sampling issues and plateform issues (no console stat only PC) that might not be representative of the gaming population). But comparing, Xfire in the last day : DC UO 150 hours/people http://www.xfire.com/games/dcuo/DC_Universe_Online/ Rift : 12500 hours/people http://www.xfire.com/games/rft/RIFT/ WOW : 150000 hours/people http://www.xfire.com/games/wow/World_of_Warcraft/ We can't make a generalization to the general population since we don't know what is the representativeness/correlation of Xfire with the general population. But it certainly indicate that among xfire user, DC online is very poorly received. I wonder about console user...

Now, I'm loath to defend SOE but I've got to assume they're missing out something in the description here. Surely they can't be insane enough to charge $10 for a few powers and 3 missions? Maybe the new areas they mention are larger and have other quests added, and the powers could be a little more expansive than suggested? There's just got to be more to it than this.

KillerBill316
KillerBill316

SOE... fail. Seriously. Even sadder thing is there will still be people who will buy this.

Henninger

Wow thats ridiculous & i dont even play the game!!!!! How r u gonna charge DLC on a suscription based game??? Thats total BS! Im madd & i dont even play this game!!! Its things like this that make me say that gaming is being ruined! Now i'll never get this game just cuz of this.

LOL serious ppl pay each month 15$ and now they cannot get an simple update for free? Make expansion big just that's it. and maybe ppl will buy after that.

Unless you're getting a substantial expansion pack, no subscription-based MMO should charge for additional content. Hell, Global Agenda does this stuff for free.

Why is there a monthly fee at all? The game was bare bones as is on release+monthly subscription fee+DLC now?

after hearing this im canceling my subscription. We have already paid for the new content. Please people don't buy it, show them that we will not go for this.

NeoHumpty

I remember reading an argument from Sony on the subscription fee that stated all updates would be free. I would have gone into this game after the beta if they would have let us get the game for free and only pay the fees to play. Actually, I was just looking at this game yesterday on ebay and considered buying it because you can get it for around $15ish now. I'll pass now that I know they will keep trying to milk more out of the players, though. Seems like it would be a better strategy to show potential buyers a bunch of stuff they're giving subscribers to get their money's worth, not nickle and dime the few players they have.

@DennisWZH this is a MMO, i don't know why they called it DLC, but this seems like a mini expansion. Something this small shoulden't cost imo

so in addition to monthly subscription theres still gonna be DLC? wow.

Green Lantern powers were supposed to be in the store version of the game and they took it out so they could charge money for it as alot of people want the light powers. Not enoigh for me to come back though.

A game with a subscription shouldn't also charge you for updates. Imagine if you had to pay for every new instance in WoW?

I'm sure that all of the 8 people that are still playing this will appreciate it :P J/k, nice to see Sony still supporting this instead of bailing on it.

considering this is a game where you have a monthly fee would have been nice if this was free but i guess Champions online does something simular heh.
