DC Universe Online beta sign-up begins

Sony Online Entertainment now accepting applicants for the upcoming PlayStation 3 and PC MMORPG beta; start date not announced.

Sony Online Entertainment recently thinned its staff by 4 percent, but that didn't stop the online games developer from opening the beta registration for its long-awaited and upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game, DC Universe Online.

Sign up to do this.

Those interested in getting an early look at the superhero MMORPG can sign up for either the PlayStation 3 or PC version at the beta registration page. Those accepted into the trial period will receive a follow-up e-mail from SOE with further instruction.

SOE did not specify a start date for the beta but did hint that the action MMORPG will roll out in phases, similar to the testing phase for Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Set within the DC Comics world, DC Universe Online will let players create a superhero or villain and fight alongside or against iconic comic book characters, such as the Joker, Batman, Superman, and others.

DC Universe Online is currently scheduled for release on November 2 for PS3 and PC. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's most recent preview.

The fine folks at DCUO are clueless if they think gamers will be paying $14.99/month... I LOVE DC & gaming but it ain't happening...

I agree with The_Wolf22 tell me why you pay money for a game instores and than a monthly subscription. To me this game would make more money if they had special download items that cost money like any good mmo should have. Its stupid because there are people who cannot play constantly and would not get their money worth. I don't care if it's $15 or $150 a good game should not charge a monthly fee. That's why to me WoW is not a good game, I don't care what it offers. I also have not seen anywhere where it says they will be charging PS3 a monthly subscription so if anyone knows that can you tell me where I can find it, appreciate it.

The 9 thumbs down I got made me laugh. Lol. Seriously? I get a bunch of thumbs down for being the genius who won't waste so much money on a game I could've already bought? @Nevryn : MMO's, if the devs were honest, would only charge PER PATCH/FIX, not by the month. So every month they do nothing, or very little, they get paid for... Nothing. I could play MW2 for 48 hours straight (I'm not as big on CoD as other games ATM, but, you get the point) and not be charged at all. Also, every expansion I want I can choose to buy. Not pay for every month. In the end, I've bought my game the 1 only time I needed to. And on the PC, most games have endless amounts of FREE patches, fixes, mods, extras, expansions, skins, etc. Also, server upkeep is no issue, because there are an infinite amount of extremely popular online-based games like CoD, whose servers rise much higher in number than some or most MMO's. But hey, maybe I'm crazy for having a brain when it comes to where my money's going!

Can we all stop saying the game's like "City of Heroes"? Of course it has similar features seeing as it's both a hero/villains game, but I really think this game has potential.

I really want to like this, but cannot seem to.I would have rather seen a new type of EQ on the ps3 honestly. With ffxiv coming out as well.....I doubt i'll even bother picking it up. I do hope this is a great game that can spark my interest. It just seems like it's going to be a DC city of heroes.

Richardthe3rd Posted Jul 20, 2010 1:42 pm PT "Not sure why all these MMO's are landing... this happened around this time last year and pretty much all of them failed." The standard of "failure" may look slightly different in MMO land, however. 1) Nothing is capable of touching WoW at the present time, so every new MMO will look like a failure next to that giant. 2) A MMO can nonetheless be considered a success in overall game terms. Take a game like Aion, for example. It sold a couple million copies at retail, already an impressive feat, and it sustains 3 million locked-in subscribers globally. It's a profitable title for the parent company. Even an old game like EQ1 allows SOE to hit minor profit margins. Some games like City of Heroes sustain operations through a humble 90,000 subs. So, there are different degrees of success - it even allows apparent MMO "flops" to somehow still exist and produce revenue months and years after they've completely faded from the spotlight.

This will be something worth trying out, at least. I haven't played a SOE-published MMO since EverQuest, and I've been itching to create my own version of DC Heroes like Green Arrow & Zatanna.

i love mmo's but there r alot of good, free mmos that are possibly better than games such as this that u must pay-2-play. not all r good, of course, but they r free and some are very enjoyable. mmohut.com has alot of good "first looks" on many of these free games on youtube, and they tell u exactly how good/bad it is. im not advertising them, but check it out!

I've signed in to the PS3 beta game. This has some potential, but I can't seem to take this idea out of my mind that this game is going to be a "DC Licensed City of Heroes"...

@The_Wolf22 Actually your logic is flawed in one major area. When you buy a normal game, with 1 cost how much does that game change? With the exception of minor patches to fix bugs, the answer is none. You can buy addons or expansions, but those cost more money too. Meanwhile, a good MMO is constantly adding content or extras past what you initially paid for. Unlike normal games where the development team can just move on, MMOs have to keep the development team working on the same game, which is where your subscription is going. That being said, I have yet to find a MMO that hasn't bored the heck out of me after about 6 months. While I'm not 100% sold on DCU (was a little burned by champions online), personally, I'll beta test any game to try it out at least. You never know where a great MMO is going to pop up. Plus beta testing is a good chance to give feedback and possibly influence the final game to make it good. That being said... I keep getting a dang error every time I try to sign up for the PC beta.

Everyone who supports the MMO monthly tax, answer this for me: At the end of the year, do you know how many times you've bought the game and should legally own it? I could buy Arkham Asylum (same universe, same people) for $50 on PS3. In a year, you've just spent $14.99 x 12 months, which equals $180. You just bought a game 2 and a half times in one year. That's why I don't do PTP MMO's =) I save $180, and I buy a number of games I don't have to continually pay for, just to play, when I already own them. Don't give me a thumbs down unless you think this is bad logic, and buying a game almost 3 times in one year is just ok. Gives me a thumbs up if you can say that you'd rather just spend that on several different games you' ll get to keep, rather than on one game you will STILL have to keep paying for every consecutive year.

Not sure why all these MMO's are landing... this happened around this time last year and pretty much all of them failed. No matter how much I love Batman and DC, I just don't see this working out.

Well, I sure hope this comes out better then Champions (which coincidentally started out as Marvel Universe). Champions wasn't bad, just very repetitive very early on. DC has a lot more lore to pull from, so they should be able to avoid that.

@ AzatlS You thought wrong. Players don't get to select from the roster. You have to make your own hero or villain.

Silent_Ninja87

@ AzatiS You can not play as any of the DC Heros or Villans. You create your own character. Do research next time before you make trollish posts.

$14.99 a month for a possible 720 hours of play per month. MMOs are deals of a lifetime enjoy it while it lasts before the government adds a "Sin" tax to it. If you can't afford $14.99 a month then you have better things you need to be doing with your time.

I don't know why people complain why MMORPG's are 15$ a month. It helps the game in the long run.

I wasn't born on Krypton... I didn't inherit a fortune... But I HAVE seen the inside of an asylum. So is this game obsolete for me? Also, do I have powers that I didn't know about?
