Dark Souls 2 weapon pack makes getting started easier (brave players can opt-out)

The Dark Souls 2 Black Armor Weapons Pack will dish out an arsenal to those who buy the Black Armor or Collector's Edition.

Bandai Namco and From Software will dish out a bevy of weapons and shields to those who purchase the Black Armor or Collector's Edition of Dark Souls II.

These items will be available to find in the game for all Dark Souls II owners, thankfully, but those who have the Black Armor and Collector's Edition of the game--and redeem the code that comes with it--will be handed the weapons at the very start.

But how might this arsenal affect the starting areas of Dark Souls II? Both the original Dark Souls and its spiritual predecessor Demon's Souls threw players unprepared and mostly unarmed into a hostile environment, and then had them figure out the lay of the land and slowly acquire a set of powerful weapons and items from there. Purists don't have to redeem the code, of course.

Here's what comes with Dark Souls II's Black Armor Weapons Pack:

  • Black Flamestone Dagger and Black Flamestone Parma: A dagger and shield encrusted in Black Flamestone both found in the Gutter at Black Gulch. Even though they are heavier than a normal dagger and shield, the Flamestone crystal’s unique properties make the dagger extremely sharp and give the shield high resistance to damage.
  • Yellow Quartz Longsword and Yellow Quartz Shield: A straight sword and small shield hardened with yellow quartz both uncovered at the bottom of the Iron Keep. Even though these items can break easily due to their high level of corrosion, they are exceptionally light and their power to inflict damage has not declined.
  • Bound Hand Axe and Bound Wooden Shield: A brutal hand axe and shield found in the Undead Purgatory. Both items are wrapped in chains and thorns to cause additional bleeding on enemies. Both the axe and shield have diminished in overall slashing power but their ability to deliver pain has been deliberately increased.
  • Homunculus Mace and Homunculus Wooden Shield: A mace and shield with spherical protrusions found in Aldia’s Keep. Although heavier-than-normal maces and shields, the hard protrusions greatly increase the striking power of the mace as well as the shield’s defensive capabilities.
  • Transgressor’s Staff and Transgressor’s Leather Shield: A staff and leather shield entwined with an unknown and seemingly lacklustre element; these items are found in the Dark Chasm of Old. They have become a catalyst for sorcery and hex and cause an effect known as Darkness.

Dark Souls II will be released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on March 11. A PC version will follow.

Hay... i downloaded my game today after pre-ordering it over PS store... no file downloaded with it just the main game file.. i started the game finished the character creation and didnt find anything in my inventory! people are saying hard copies get it in a Voucher but how does this work on a digital copy!? can someone help!

Why does everyone get so upset about them releasing weapons, don't use em. People are saying it gives people and easy way out, we don't know how good the weapons are but yeah it might. So what? Its like people get a hard on by telling people they beat dark souls (Its really not even that hard tbh), but if they do give an easy way out you don't have to take it, play the game how you want and enjoy it for yourself instead of whining about what other people are gunna do or how it can make DS LOOK easier.

Maybe with a second or third character playthrough I'll use the preorder bonuses.  I want my first playthrough to be as dark and lonely as it can get.

Is there Black Armor Edition for the PC?  I can't find it anywhere

This won't even come close to making the game easier. None of the weapons from Dark Souls were too particularly powerful without any upgrades, even the Drake Sword wasn't very strong later in the game. This isn't nearly as big of a deal as some people are making it out to be. Don't use them if you don't like it. If you're worried about PVP there isn't much you can do in that regard.  Some people will probably use them online but it doesn't matter if you're more skilled. Weapons don't always matter in PVP. Check out the Shieldus build on youtube for an example. I'm still looking forward to the game. If anything it looks like the game has gotten more unforgiving. My only question is if you redeem the code and get to where the weapons are normally found, can you get a 2nd? If so it sounds like some Duel Wield builds will benefit greatly from obtaining double of some weapons on only one play through.

I don't get all this shitstorm. Nobody is force to use these weapons from the start. And who says about PvP, everyone knows that you don't need better weapons for winning, yes, they may be useful, but what count are the skills.

Remaining in topic, I think that this however has been thought by Namco Bandai for widening public and preorders.

I think that even if I preordered the game (in October) and I'll have this voucher, I'll play the game as From intended as I did with the first one, because one of the most beautiful things in Dark Souls is the freedom the game give you about playing style.

I read on another website that these weapons will be available through out the game for players who do not preorder. This seems to imply the weapons will be of varying strength if they are placed in different areas. With the new hollow invasion system, this presents a problem. Players will have an unfair advantage if these weapons have a varying level of strength.

I doubt those will make the game "easier". Bet they are just flashy weapons than real strong ones.

Won't be using on my first playthrough, but they'll be nice to have for subsequent ones.

Wow reading these comments makes me continue to realize people take Dark Souls far too seriously. There isn't any indication that this stuff will people vastly superior to anything else. For the most part, almost every weapons in DS had pros and cons and no one weapon is decisively better than another (other than like the sword hilt/broken straight sword). Its all about how you use and upgrade them and your character build. From reading the descriptions of the items, it seems each of them has one positive over the "regular" version and one negative (typically being weight and therefore speed). This won't make the game any easier or give an advantage in PvP.

Main point: Dark Souls elitists are the worst and ironically miss out on the nuances of the game.

Getting these items will be the same as getting the drake sword, sword of Astora, zweihander, elite knight armor, wolf ring, uchigatana, etc.  I'm sure these items will be lackluster and their inclusion is mostly intended as an introduction to the new weapon modification options.

I bet the weapons will require a SL 25-30 character before they actually begin to feel viable.  No doubt they will require shards which are unavailable at the beginning of the game.

LOL at all the morons getting upset by this. How does this ruin the game for you if someone else wants to play the game with this armour? They can play the game how they want. You elitist retards are something else.

Did all the haters play the deprived class in Dark Souls? If you don't want them don't download and use them. I'll probably use them if they're useful until I find something that suits my play style.

So now I can expect to be invaded by everyone and their mom while they have gear they didn't work towards...? May not be a huge problem as long as they managed to fix the lagstabbers I encountered 90% of the time in DS...

Anyway, I am kind of concerned they are losing the main appeal of the game by trying to appeal to more people this way... I remember learning Demon's Souls the hard way so when I did manage to find those items, I felt like I accomplished something. This sounds like a slipper slope tbh.

Bakaro

Not interested, and don't see why having "OP" equipment from the start is a good thing. Might as well ask a max SL buddy to ship you through the entire game.

The whole point of the "series" is facing the challenge presented head on, and hopefully come out victorious. (That feeling is ADDICTIVE!)

BuBsay
BuBsay

Not sure why everyone is getting upset over this and calling it a cash grab.

A. The Black Armor edition costs the same as the regular version so no cash needed.

B. This isn't an exclusive deal, the items will already be in the game according to From Soft it's just that this allows you to start with them rather than finding them later on in the game world.

With that being said, I want to be going in completely unarmed. I've only watched one of Vaatividya's videos about the intro of Dark Souls 2 and from what I've seen of that it looks fantastic.

Anyone who does this, is just cheating themselves.  The best bit about the Souls franchise, is the great feeling you get when you discover something for yourself.  You're meant to earn everything in these games, not be handed them.  The players that start with these weapons, will miss out on that initial feeling of difficulty and excitement of finding something useful to use at the start.

That's how I see it anyway.  I'm happy we can "opt out", but why even bother giving it as an option.  Don't become like every other game out there, Dark Souls.  Please.

Ah lets further sully the gaming industry by making hard games much easier than they are intended to be cuase of all the stupid people that shouldn't even be PLAYING video games to begin with.  This is why Japan always dumbed down their games for others, we can't handle it.  This is why gaming is FAR to easy these days.  Bring back the good ol days of what it mean to be HARDcore gamers.

Dark Souls or Demon's Souls are not hardcore games at all. All you need is a bit patience to understand the battle system plus some practice.

What I loved most about dark souls was its relentless attitude towards me as player. Like a samurai teacher that demands your focus and skill. With this news this brutal samurai teacher suddenly favours some of the students because they paid him some bribe.

Disappointing.

I've ordered the collectors edition but I won't be redeeming any free armour or weapons. I don't want the disappointment of fighting/exploring to pick up loot already in my inventory. I hope that this is a case of nothing of worth coming easily.

@Squire_Ramza

That is certainly one persons perspective...

Let's just look at the trend From Software has layed out in front of us...they've only made two games, however, there is certainly a distinctive trend and in both Demons Souls and Dark Souls the weapons and difficulty have been quite different.

The trend is that From is undeniably attempting to change their target market to a much broader spectrum whilst being 'big headed' expecting to keep the old fan's. Demons Souls had weapons which were all different and made the player work hard to progress in the game to earn more powerful ones, whereas Dark Souls every single weapon (if you look closely at each of their benefits (length, power, secondary attack)) were equally balanced. seeing the last previous games were different it would be foolish to think that the next one won't be.

The obvious trend in difficulty, also noting that From told fans Dark Souls would be more difficult than it's predecessor (when it wasn't), is that the game is getting easier. Especially after From announced that they plan on making this one easier to be more 'accessible' should NOT be taken lightly!

In regards to this starter weapon kit, you better count on it that it will make the game a lot easier and you should definitely believe it's one of MANY things that will.

TazmanianD

@drugo93 Respectfully, I don't think the argument, "you don't have to use it" is a particularly good one. Speaking for myself, I don't play games so I can get an exercise in self-control. I want to push the game as hard as I can and I want it to push back. I suspect most everyone would yell and scream about any game that just had a "win game" button somewhere near the beginning. Or "beat boss" buttons throughout the game. Those things just suck and have no place in a game.

Now, I'm not saying adding these weapons up front is anywhere near that stupid and, frankly, given how brutally nasty DS1 was, I don't really blame them for wanting to make it a little more accessible. I loved DS1 but I'm kind of surprised anyone else did too. And that this is optional is even better although I fear that once you use the code, you're stuck with it forever.

Johnny-n-Roger
Johnny-n-Roger

@drugo93  No one is forced to use the weapons, correct, but that doesn't keep them from breaking the game IMO.  The fact that there is an "easy way out" or an "easier way out" is demeaning to the games difficulty by implying that the difficult moments of the game early on only seem difficult by false pretense.

This leads to the thought process that maybe these moments were designed to be near impossibly difficult to persuade the player to purchase the content, which would be a great marketing concept, but would break the game in the eyes of the games core fanbase.

Goron24
Goron24

@franzito  Yes and no. I mean the way Darksouls 1 worked was most weapons were viable if you +15ed them or made them into elemental weapons. I doubt that this will change. So they probably won't make the game easier, but I'm sure they all will be decently strong weapons in endgame.

@ekelly10 I agree on everything you said for the most part -- with the exception of the 'too seriously' part.  I don't see anything wrong with having a passion for something that you love.  There are players out there, like me, who have put in over a thousand hours of gameplay between Demon and Dark Souls... and that is because we are passionate about the games.  We enjoy them and love them and want to see the series grow and succeed.

It's not the elitists complaining.  The true Souls vets should know none of this gear is going to be particularly stronger than starting equipment.

I doubt any of these will be as strong as the Drake Sword (not that the Drake Sword is strong, but it's strong at the VERY beginning of the game), and I see no mention of any rings.

@pound-u They aren't even elitist, they're just players scared of losing to a noob with these weapons. I don't see this being a problem for the good Dark Souls players. These weapons are certainly not the best weapons in the game.....I hope.

@---Cipher---

Who cares dude if you're a true Dark/Demon's Souls vet you know that it's highly likely none of these weapons are very strong without upgrades.

Sfr528
Sfr528

@FknPitsy I'm sorry to say I don't agree with these sentiments at all.  Who are we to tell someone how they should go about enjoying their gameplay experiences.  If some neophyte to the DS games wants to use some weapons that will make the initial stages of the game less daunting -- why abase them for that choice?  The game is going to be brutally hard, some slightly stronger weapons at the start of the game will hardly make a huge difference in the overall experience.

I know it might be a hard concept to swallow, but not everyone enjoys games the exact same way.  Some players do not have the patience or find the same sense of enjoyment out of discovering everything for themselves.  They'd rather have a guide stating the best route and the best strategies for dealing with enemies and bosses.  If that's how they find enjoyment, what do you care?  Because there will be a strategy guide out for this game with the release or shortly after -- so there will surely be a slice of players that will take advantage of that.

Don't let me be misunderstood, I am completely in the crowd that loves the challenge of this series, and also enjoy the sense of discovery and figuring out boss mechanics all on my own.  However, that doesn't mean I particularly care if someone else used a strategy guide or YouTube to get similar results.  To be honest, my favorite aspects of this series is in the replay -- I enjoy trying to beat the games at SL1 with minimum gear.  To that end, what does it really matter how someone starts the game.

@Dacebane

Yeah, for the vets it's just going to be personal preference.  Me, I'll be redeeming the code anyway.  What with playing through Dark Souls five times, I picked up duplicate weapons and armor many many times.  I basically have four or five copies of everything in ye olde bottomless inventory.  Suffice it to say, I'm used to picking up items I already have.  So starting with a few weapons/shields isn't going to detract from my own experience of the game, although I understand why others feel that it would.

I foresee lots of these codes being posted on forums for others to use...

@boodleout

Fair enough, but the stats for the weapons haven't been released and neither have the requirements to use them. Still think it's too early to tell for sure, but I get what you're saying.

ekelly10

@Sfr528 @ekelly10 I appreciate the sentiment of your last sentence; it sadly does not seem to be the case across the internet. I have put hundreds of hours into DS myself and its great, not perfect. There seems to be an assumption that any change whatsoever to the formula will ruin the game. That is what I mean by "too seriously". No sequel game should be exactly the same as the previous, otherwise what is the point of a sequel?

I want Dark Souls 2 and I want it to be similar in some ways but also distinct, moving forward. Letting people have some weapons early on doesn't change a thing.
