COD2 patch reaches front lines

PC version of Activision's WWII shooter gets reinforcements; patch adds PunkBusters support, new multiplayer maps.

by

Though PC gamers may have moved on to slaying goblins and bandits, there once was a time when they slaughtered soldiers of the Third Reich. Activision's Call of Duty 2 was released for the PC in late October, and today the battle rages on with new content.

The latest patch for Call of Duty 2 bumps the game up to version 1.2 and is now available from GameSpot. In addition to keeping things fair and square on the battlefield with PunkBuster's anticheating technology, the patch adds two new maps for multiplayer gaming.

As previously announced, the maps are the all-new Rhine and reworked Call of Duty favorite Harbor. Rhine is set in the war-torn German city of Wallendar, which has been almost entirely reduced to rubble after years of war. Harbor takes place in the shipping port of Rostov, Russia.

Developer Infinity Ward isn't finished with delivering extra content for the PC game. The game's mod tools are "being finalized" and will be released "shortly."

Call of Duty 2 is rated T for Teen and retails for $49.99. For more on the game, read GameSpot's full review.

Gotta love when people like rock come on to say things like "great...don't care though" If you don't care, don't post. Simple. PEACE

The multiplayer on 360 is still broken. If they had brought this patch out 2 months ago... I might of actually cared.

Sorry, F1sTDaCuffS, but as much as I love BF2, they certainly did NOT get it right the first time. BF2 had serious problems when it was first released, particularly with its netcode and screwy hit boxes. To DICE's credit, they fixed some of them right away; but others are still broken, like the insanely annoying bug that makes allies' names show red as if they were enemies. In fact, their last patch messed things up so much that they couldn't even release the add-on pack until they patched the patch! So don't go claiming that BF2 was somehow "done right the first time." That, my friend, is a load of horse pucky.

COD2 is good on the PC, better on the 360 though, but not nearly as good as Oblivion.

I really hope they come to the 360 because the maps are getting a bit stale. Anyways, the maps sound good. I just wish it didn't take so long.

Pfft. They call this a patch? It doesn't address any issues, so it's not a patch, it's addon material. Screw that. Hey Activision, how about you go online and research some of the problems many people are having with DirectX 9.0c mode in singleplayer and release an actual patch that addresses real issues instead of spending your time giving us maps from the first COD? This is bull-diddly-doo. I bite my thumb at you, Activision!

Hmm, half a year later... who the hell still cares about CoD2? Or the WW-II themed FPS genre in general?

Glad I'm not the only one getting tired of hearing the Oblivion hype. Yeah, we know it's a good game, big deal, they come along all the time. In a few months, there'll be a new flavor of the month. Anyway, back on topic. This is very good news, about time though! Shame on Infinity Ward for taking so long but if it means that the patch will be solid, I'm okay with the wait. PS. Just so you know, I own and enjoy Oblivion but there are plenty of great RPGs out there and (gasp!) even a few that are better!
