While promoting his new movie Knight of Cups, Bale was asked how he felt about his work in Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises. "I didn't quite manage what I hoped I would throughout the trilogy," he said, via Yahoo Movies. "Chris did, but my own sense of self is like, 'I didn't quite nail it.'"

Bale went on to explain that Heath Ledger's Oscar-winning turn as the Joker didn't help matters either. "Heath turned up, and just kind of completely ruined all my plans," he said. "'Because I went, 'He's so much more interesting than me and what I'm doing.'"

Bale was the latest in a long line of actors to play the Caped Crusader, and helped restore the popularity of the character after the disappointment of 1997's flop Batman & Robin, which starred George Clooney.

Nolan's Batman films made more than $2.3 billion at the global box office between 2005 and 2012. Ben Affleck will next play the character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which opens on March 24, 2016.
