Cave Story 3D spelunking 3DS

Nippon Ichi to publish Nicalis' stereoscopic revamp of indie side-scrolling platformer this summer.

by

Nippon Ichi is best known for its strategy role-playing games like the Disgaea series, but the niche publisher is making its 3D debut with a decidedly different kind of game. The company today announced it is working with Nicalis to bring the developer's Cave Story franchise to the 3DS this summer.

Igor is about to get a 3D makeover.

While Cave Story 3D will feature glasses-free stereoscopic 3D graphics, the game will still play like the side-scrolling action adventure that inspired it. As the title's diminutive protagonist, players will find themselves in a cave with no recollection of the past, but assurance that they must aid a group of adorable rabbit-like critters.

Originally known as Doukutsu Monogatari, Cave Story was first released as a free-to-play PC game in 2004. Nicalis adapted it and released it as a WiiWare title last March, with a DSiWare edition following in November. Nippon Ichi has said it hopes this new version will "bring new life" to the game and make it accessible to new audiences.

@isaacmj I agree, i completely loved the original, but i don't see the point in spending my money on a 3D version which will add almost nothing to the game experience. The games awesome story and deep gameplay are what made it great, and 3D isn't going to add anything to either.

I heard such great things about the original, so I'll definately be keeping an eye on this one.

@Ronnie_Rim All FPS are already rendered as "3D games" they are just translated into what you'de see on a 2D surface from a certain angle. So I don't think it's really the developers that need to incorporate the depth, that information is already there, it just needs a medium to be presented properly

I don't know how 3D can make Cave Story better. The game is absolutely outstanding but it is supposed to look and feel vintage so they can't (or shouldn't) improve the graphics. I'll just hold for reviews.

I'm glad I never played it on the PC, Wii or DS. If they're going to just keep re-releasing the same game over and over again then I'll just wait until it's using the Halo engine and then buy it.

I played the demo and liked it but i really don't like playing on home consoles that much so yeah i would look into the 3DS version.

Cave Story has its charm, and it's certainly impressive that the whole thing was done by one guy and distributed as freeware, for which reason I can understand its cult following, but set that aside and you'll see that it's not a particularly great game. Save your money and download the free version.

I have beat the Wiiware version some time ago and was looking forward to a replay, but now maybe I'll wait for the 3DS version. If it's not too highly priced I could see myself owning a home and portable version of that game. Glad to see yet even more 3DS support even before the system has launched.

I find this laughable. So Cave Story was a game made in the 3D era of games but in a style of if it was a 2D plateformer from the Famicon or Nintendo but now their going to make it 3D as if it was made in the 3D era of games which it was. My head exploded!

I thought old dsi-ware titles were going to be transferable? Will there be two versions of Cave Story now or can you not transfer third party titles?

I held out on buying it on my DSi the other day in anticipation of a potential 3DS announcement...though I'm tempted to buy it twice anyways to support the developer.

Lame title? Excuse me, but Cave Story is one of, if not THE greatest sidescroller to come out in the past decade. It's exciting to see it coming out in 3D, and it seems like a perfect handheld game. I'd like to see them at least make a couple changes to the game itself (as in new secrets and such) so I'll have a reason to play it again though.

Another lame title for the gimmicky 3DS . . . YAWN.

3-D on a 2-D side-scroller with large maps? Me want.

I hope it gets more than a simple "sprites closer, background farther" effect. The Wii version is great as it is, and only if it the 3D trully makes a difference will I get the 3D version.

Pretty cool, although transferring Cave Story from DSi to 3DS may be cheaper.

Awesome sauce, although I already own the game on WiiWare.
