Catch Pokemon on your phone using Google Maps

This may be part of a larger April Fool's prank from Google, but you can still start the process of catching them all right now on your iOS or Android device.

by

Given the timing, you might dismiss this as an elaborate April Fool's joke from Google, but you can catch Pokemon on your smartphone using the Google Maps app right now.

Though the action-packed trailer above spins it as much, much more exciting than it actually is, an update made to Google Maps on iPhone and Android today lets you search out Pokemon and add them to your Pokedex by searching for them on Google Maps. To start, all you have to do is click on the search bar, then hit "Press Start" right below it.

You have an unlimited supply of Pokeballs, and the Pokmemon don't fight back, so it's not much of a game. But Google is pitching this as a race to "catch 'em all," and the winner will be invited to Google's headquarters and "hired" on as the staff Pokemon Master.

That last part (and the April 2, 2PM PDT deadline), is probably not true and is part of a larger April Fool's joke that we'll hear more details about tomorrow. But given that Google's put so much time into making an app and mobile Pokedex, it would still be pretty nice if the winner at least got the fancy Pokemon Master business card shown at the end of the video.

So, anyone out there find a Mew yet?

I downloaded the updated version and there's no "Press Start" button. Why isn't it there? Ho do I start this without it?

I captured all 151 Pokemon, Including Mew. I feel such a sense of much accomplishment, that I think I am going to put it on my Resume... :P

Nintendo's first foray into mobile gaming. Free to play version of Pokemon!!

Seriously though, this has to be some of the best publicity Nintendo (or Google) ever thought up. I see 3ds sales and pokemon sales jumping right after this. I'll probably be grabbing one myself.

This was a very cool idea. I just wish they would leave it up for longer though.

"This may be part of a larger April Fool's prank from Google,"   really?? coz i would have totally believed this was true on April 1st .Stop trying to warn everyone that it's April fools, I think those of us with brains figured that out yesterday. You don't have to be all PC about it(politically correct) if someone mistakenly thinks this is real then yeah it's their fault.

looks legit though. The copyrights are provided so Google wouldn't have paid that kind of money to do this if it were just a prank.

Look at the people in the video getting scared of their phone, like the pokemon are actually attacking them.

This would be rad as long as I don't unknowingly have a Mr. Mime hanging out in my bathroom or something.

It's funny that so many people won't even try it because they think Google is trolling.

Sigh, I actually opened up my google map and typed in a few. Fun fact - there are 2 streets in the US that have Pokemon as a word.

Well played - I wouldn't have opened it tomorrow.

@mike468 There is quite a lot of attention for this google pokemon advertising, perhaps have a vey good production, but to always return to the same point. Most people are doing this pokemon catch because most have smart phones not because are all that into Nintendo pokemon stuff, although is very popular among young lads. To resume the money is on the mobile market for Nintendo, not their systems.I bet they had already realize that.

@SpLiTMaN  It's not a game, it's just Google Maps and they added this into it

Except it was announced the day before April first and the game is playable

The only thing is you don't have to travel to the places, you can't use your phone to see them and the pokemon master job title may not exist although the last part will be confirmed tomorrow

@reesegirl19  That's Augmented Reality on 3DS.  It's real but it's not part of this.

Go! We will wait for you to test it for.... I mean we will wait eagerly for your return.

@Daian The app is actually true. I already got 28 just browsing google maps for about 10 minutes.
