Film-goers have known for literally years at this point that they can expect Captain America: The First Avenger to arrive on the silver screen on July 22. From this release date, perceptive gamers could surmise that Sega would deliver its game tie-in Captain America: Super Soldier on or about that July day, and now the publisher has confirmed that fact.
Today, Sega announced that Captain America: Super Soldier will arrive on the Tuesday before its theatrical counterpart, hitting the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and DS on July 19. Sega has also tinkered with the game's platforms, having canceled the previously announced PSP edition but stating that a 3DS version will also arrive on July 19.
Super Soldier will offer an original storyline based on the Captain America film, which stars Chris Evans (Fantastic Four), Tommy Lee Jones (No Country for Old Men), and Samuel L. Jackson (Iron Man 2). Harking back to the comic franchise's roots, Nazis will be the target of Captain America's ire, as the shield-wielding hero squares off against his archnemesis, Red Skull, in an effort to stop the evil machinations of the scientist Arnim Zola.
Beginning during the height of WWII, the third-person action adventure will be set in a sprawling castle complex and will feature foes from the comic books, including the Iron Cross and members of the terrorist group HYDRA. Gameplay will have an emphasis on hand-to-hand combat involving the superhero's indestructible shield as well as platforming sequences.
