Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Dev Promises "Huge Improvement" To Weapon Audio

Sledgehammer Games audio director Don Veca says players will immediately notice the "huge improvement" to weapon sounds in this fall's game.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare developer Sledgehammer Games already discussed the strides it's making in terms of visuals for this fall's military shooter. Now, the developer is back to point out how the game's sound design is shaping up to blow gamers away.

In the video above, released today, Sledgehammer Games audio director Don Veca says he expects players will immediately notice how much better guns sound in Advanced Warfare. "Right off the bat, one of the things I think gamers are going to notice is the huge improvement to the weapons," Veca said.

Veca said his team didn't just record a weapon sound and import that into Advanced Warfare. Instead, the developer tried to recreate the feeling of what it felt like to fire a weapon as a means to make the player feel like they are really there. The game's guns have been designed so that the "sound goes through your body," Veca said.

Not only will guns sound impressive in Advanced Warfare, Veca says, but because Sledgehammer has built "intelligence" into its audio systems, you will "virtually never hear the same impact or explosion twice."

Advanced Warfare is of course set in the future; 2054 to be exact. However, to make the game's sounds come across as believable, Veca said it was important to ground them in reality.

"It's a futuristic setting, but we want it to be believable," Veca said. "We would always start with something grounded and add new sounds that we created ourselves, mix it in, layer things; so that you come up with something truly unique."

It all comes together, Veca says, to create a sound that rivals that of Hollywood movies. "When you're done, you see all these different audio systems all working together, and it sounds like a movie. But it's not a movie. It's happening right there," he said.

Advanced Warfare launches November 4 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. Sledgehammer recently said that because the game was developed over a period of three years, the studio was able to take "full advantage" of the power of the Xbox One and PS4.

This does seem pretty sweet. It's getting me excited a little bit. Especially with BF4's disappointment. Haven't purchased COD since Black Ops 2.

The last COD I tried was MW3.  Was lackluster. Previous games like MW1 (one of my favorite online shooters) were much better.  That being said I do want to try this one on our new to be rigs. Just as long as it is optimized. I just don't care much for the Treyarch developed COD games, because the optimization isn't as good as IW.

This game seems worth trying though! New group working on it, may bring something interesting to the COD table.

for a moment I could swear this looked like Crysis 3 xD

All I keep hearing is how beautiful the game looks and now how great the audio is. What about the selling point for cod, multiplayer. How laggy will it be and are they going to lie about the servers too.

I want to love this game, because I'm getting sick of all the negativity about CoD, but god knows someone will get angry at me for being optimistic. Remember when we used to be excited about new games? Pity our community has become so cynical.

I hate to say it but this game could be the best since cod4 if everything goes as they are saying.

The hype the hype the hype. Its not the sounds that need work in the COD games. Its the game play and maps. The maps have no real variation to them. Its all just the same' o same' o R&G hallway CQ bull shit maps. The maps need areas made for really sniping. Not just on the regular r&g route. Granted COD games are OK to play but .nthe series has not grown. Its stale. We need more accesable area and not wasted space like the COD game that have came before.

I may check this out...I doubt the sounds of the weapons will sound as cool as they did in Halo 4. The gameplay shown at E3 still very much looked like (gameplay-wise) and sounded like a CoD game.

They listened to the fans and critics' many, many issues with the games, and absolutely no one said "fix the sound FX". So they did.

That sounds cool, I mean you don't really think about it much in games but in real life, yes explosions and such would not just always be the same sound replayed.  Of course, it's probably just BS :).

Good thing they used this audio preview to preview and compare previous weapon sounds, or I would have felt like the video was pointless.......

They will give you better audio, but don't worry you will still be able to snipe across the map with your revolver to kill the guy with the .50 cal.

Not that I'll ever pick up this game, but yea, CoD gun FX has always sounded more akin to firing an airsoft pistol rather than a lethal weapon. I remember the first time I played Battlefield 1943 and heard the sweet, sweet sound of that M1 Garand. Man oh man, that thing sounded powerful. Those were the days.

im really curious to see which will sell better, this or destiny.

@complacentcouch its not about optimism...and others will not get angry on you...they will get angry because COD developers try to fool consumers by enhancing the same game and releasing it every year...
i was a fan of COD but same shit every year....wtf...wait for few years...give us something completely new...gamers do not have problems in waiting..we are still waiting for half life 3..
take your time and give us something like cod 4 Modern warfare...not the modern warfare,,,

@klakier82 didnt George Lucas's sound crew just bang on a pipe when they made those lazer gun sounds?

arrowhead927
arrowhead927

@DeusGladiorum Great way to put it :) Garand is awesome sounding along with the tommy gun.
Battlefield sounds so much more natural/realistic whilst cod(even in the vid above) sounds so artifical and pretty crap to be honest

@quicktim3 Id like destiny to sell better
Probably wont tho because kiddies go nuts for this dlc, i mean game

jako998

@quicktim3  CoD will sell better because it has a huge stupid idiotic fanbase that continue to buy a copy & paste game. Im really hoping Destiny does VERY  well though.

arrowhead927
arrowhead927

@nyran125tk well this is call of dudey, im sure someone has enough spare change to buy something better then a pipe for the sound effects.
Or did they spend it all on beer and just keep the old sounds? i cant remember
