Bungie's Destiny 'quite like Halo' - Report

Demonware employee supposedly demoed Bungie's new game, finding it to resemble studio's prior body of work.

Bungie's next game, rumored to be titled Destiny, is reportedly not very different from the company's most famous body of work: Halo. Internet supersleuth Superannuation dug up a blog entry from a Demonware employee at Kotaku, who wrote about the day he spent at Bungie, including a description of the studio's new game as "still quite like Halo."

This person, reportedly a senior Demonware employee, described Destiny as boasting cooperative gameplay and numerous alien gun battles. He added that its sense of exploration was a strong point. Overall, though, he said that "there is a lot of work still to be done."

He also claimed he was shown a video that demonstrated a live game scene that featured numerous atmospheric items, including "huge amounts of trees and foliage," as well as particle effects, dynamic lighting, and a day-night cycle. Lastly, he wrote about Beatles member Paul McCartney's involvement with Destiny, which Bungie confirmed over the summer.

Demonware is an Activision-owned online software and services company. It has contributed to a range of Activision franchises like Call of Duty and Transformers and lists Bungie as one of its partners.

Destiny is Bungie's first project as part of a 10-year publishing deal with Call of Duty company Activision. Legal documents from May suggest that this game will be released for the Xbox 360 and that console's successor in 2013, with a 2014 release slated for the PlayStation 3.

2013 = Next-Box... Can't see "particle effects" being done on what sounds like such an immersive game on current gen software (think Watch Dogs E3 demo for what I'm talking about)... Bring on E3 2013!!!

Oh. Was kind of hoping they'd go off the beaten path a bit and bring us something totally fresh.

Why did I think this was supposed to be some kind of MMO ??

Ehhh, I really hope this isn't true. I love Halo and Bungie to death but the world already has Halo. What I want is something innovative from Bungie, its not like they haven't proven they know how to do it.

Well, I doubt Activision partnered with them to develop social games. They want another mega franchise, Bungie developed one, so make another one with a different title and go multiplatform.

Well, it's what they're used to, what they're good at. It's their thing, so... yeah.

Halo-esque game on the PlayStation 3?

I'm down with that.  Then again though Activision is involved.... so maybe not!

So this is the deal they made with Activision? Make us a Halo ripoff?

Well at least someone is trying to make a Halo-esque type of game... 343 destroyed Halo with its new Call of Duty type game play... HALO 4 multiplayer sucks! Campaign is great, and so is Spartan Ops... the rest is just so much garbage. I was so disappointed with Multiplayer I was actually pissed...

First Silent hill dies. then Resident Evil dies. Now Halo is completely ruined for me.

I played Halo 3, and Reach alot online... I don't think I'll ever go play Halo 4 online again... hated it so much.

I imagine they made a new ip rather than keep making  halo because microsoft was trying to control what they were doing with halo.

i thought it would have been cool if they did somthing in a similar universe as their RTS MYTH series( i think that was their name anyway). i realy liked those

What people need to realize is that shortly after Halo 3, Bungie and Microsoft professionally agreed to end their business arrangements. But, under contract, Bungie had to ship out another two games. ODST and Halo Reach. Is it a shocker that these games were the most disappointing in the series? They worked on the damn series for 10 years. I'm sure their project leads were getting tired and wanted to move in a new direction; and when they wanted to bail out, they had to keep grinding so they could break free from Microsoft.

343 just SMOKED anything Bungie EVER did with Halo. Not to mention the game now looks realistic, as it should, instead of cartoony, like Bungie made it. Bungie sucks and I'm not surprised they're trying to make a Halo-type game with different skins. I don't think they're capable of anything else at this point. People will buy it because they assume Bungies next game will be killer and Activision will promote the hell out of it.

Halo itself is like Bungie's Marathon. So are we gonna see even more Marathon symbols in Destiny?

baystatethrashr
baystatethrashr

I'm honestly not surprised, but I'm not sure how they could top what 343i is doing with Halo.

Look on the bright side though, it's a new IP, which is not common among shooters these days.

kind of dissapoint here.. i love halo to death but idk.. i just hope this guy is overreacting.. it could be similar, yes because its bungie.. but cmon not waaay too similar..

So let's get this straight. Bungie's new game, Destiny, is a ripoff of their previous work, Halo, which in and of itself was a ripoff of there previous previous work, Marathon. Priceless.

Hmmm for some reason I would have liked them to try something new but oh well... should be good nonetheless!

I don't understand why in the world they left Microsoft and the Halo franchise to do a game that is 'quite like Halo'. I just don't see the point in it. I was hoping they would use their new-found freedom to branch out into a different genre.

Oh man, will some people please shut up. Halo Reach was great, there was NOTHING bad about it. Seriously, If you're going to say the game sucks then give me some reasons.

Plays like Halo?  That's not a bad thing at all.

Speaking of which.  Halo 4 is a fun game, but it's just.. not.. Bungie.  It's good Halo fun but not quite the same without Bungie.

A First Person Shooter, or similar art in universe artsyle like Halo. Still Destiny could be a spiritual successor along "Halo" for the 8th Generation which could help Playstation 4, PSvita and Xbox 720 maybe Razor's Project Fiona Gaming tablet, And traditional PC. Would be nice if Destiny would make it to the Wii U as well. Bungie is now muliplatform which could help this new Destiny become a new franchise for the 8th generation. Reaching a wider Audience than Halo series did. Bungie will make Destiny a great game.

I wouldn't mind another Halo type game. But, hopefully its not too similar...nothing can be Halo.

Great a Halo clone, just what the fps genre needs. Hope I'm wrong.

now, funny thing is beofre there was halo, there was marathon.  and was halo different from that, no.  Shows how creative this dev really is.

IMO, halo only became so popular because xbox had nothing else when it released.  there as way better games on pc before halo came along.  Halo 2 was a great game.  but still i dont think it would have been anything special if it came out on PC only.  Unreal, quake, doom, halflife, etc... are all way better and came before halo.

yay activision!  maybe they will make multiplayer have an additional cost and require a game subscription fee.  in this perfect world, my only unmet demand then would be to be able to pay for the privilege of unlocking future content delivered at launch, or paying for continued support.

Any love for the PC this time, Bungie?

If you're going to resemble a game, it might as well be a billion dollar franchise game. On top of that, Bungie has already proven they can hang in the FPS world. This may not be as successful as Halo (too many established franchises to compete with), but I'm willing to bet it will do ok.

Didn't Bungie state that they wanted to leave MS because all MS made them do was Halo?  SMH

LOL the irony just hit me:

Microsoft to 343: "We REAAALLY want that CoD money. Make Halo more like CoD."

Activision to Bungie: "We REAAALLY want that Halo money. Make Destiny more like Halo."

ROFL@companies envying each others billion dollar franchises while forgetting they have one of their own.
