In July of last year, the future of heavy-metal-themed fantasy-action game Brutal Legend hung in the balance, as it was dropped by Vivendi in the wake of the publisher's merger with Activison. Fortunately for those looking forward to the game, EA was there to pick up the pieces and confirmed that it would be publishing the title, ready for launch towards the end of 2009.

Today, EA has announced that Brutal Legend will be released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on October 16 in the UK and on October 13 in North America. Brutal Legend stars Jack Black, who also fronts one half of comedy-rock band Tenacious D. Black takes on the role of Eddie Riggs, supreme roadie, who is tasked with saving an alternate world filled with evil demons and every piece of metal cliche imaginable.

The game is being developed by Tim Schafer's Double Fine Producutions. Schafer--known for his work on the first two Monkey Island games, Grim Fandango, and Psychonauts--was understandably pleased with a firm release date for the game, saying, "Wooo! Having an official release date is awesome, and how cool is it that EA threw down the dough to have the name of an entire month changed to Rocktober?"
